But most important, they faced graduation together, a time to say goodbye. Many bonds were made in the senior class. Friendships, memories, and a special closeness among them will never be forgotten. The class of '88 lived up to their potential of making Sacred Heart what it is today. In ath- letics, cheerleading, speech, and academics, they excelled. THEIR SENIOR YEAR Intermission for the Juniors. Our Junior year was a busy one. First we had our ver- sion of the Newlywed Game for the Homecoming skit. We built the bonfire which we were told was the best ever. We decorated Christmas Formal differently with real pine trees and a park setting. Money making projects included cake raffles, cleaning houses, and moving Windles. Our final and most exciting task was Prom. We deco- rated with 2800 green and silver balloons, that covered arches and columns. We raised enough money to buy each senior a champagne glass. Our theme was “Never Say Goodbye.” Julie Goltz gave the Junior address and some of the mothers prepared the meal. All of this was done un- der the supervision of Brad Res. We treasure the memories of our junior year and look forward to making more our last year. It also must retain enough intensity throughout all the long hours of practice to look smooth on game day. Coach Goltz developed these quali- ties within each player, and the team showed steady improvement. IN 1988 Raph skies for two. A rejection for Keithlev The 1987-88 basketball campaign started out with an abun- dance of expectations, dreams, goals, and ended with results. The Irish did indeed give the trophy case it’s biggest prize in S.H. history. But there were times that many of us wondered how far the team could really go. As the season wore on, the Irish continued to squeeze out close games and win the ones that they were supposed to. All young teams are expected to stumble with composure some time during a season, and they tripped at Baileyville, KS, right before the Districts. But the Irish silenced concerns with District victories over Humboldt and Southeast, and left the noise-making to the tremendous Irish faithful. So the Irish prepared for the “Battle of Waterloo, for the right to go to state. The battle turned into a massacre and once again critics surfaced questioning the competition of our district. But the pride of the team turned the speculation into championship perfor- mances over Spencer, Polk-Hordville, and Humphrey. Quietly behind the glitter and glory lies the team’s true tribute: it was not 5 players who sweat blood in long practices, it was 13. It was not 5 who won 23 games, but a proud 13 standing as one. — Matt Knobbe 23 Coaches give one last time. This picture says a thousand words. The following evening Jackie McGin- nis and Dan O’Grady were crowned Home- coming Royalty. Other candidates were Angie Helmick, David Keithley, Anne Si- mon, and Mike Knobbe. The annual Living Rosary and Christmas dance was held Friday, December 18th, 1987. The Senior boys led the rosary as we all held candles and circled the dark church. Each student said a part of the rosary and carols were sung by all. Shirley and Merlin Bauman posed as Mary and Joseph and their daughter Danielle portrayed Baby Jesus. After the Rosary we filed into the gym. The Juniors spent the day converting it into a winter wonderland, decorating it with park benches and snowflaked balloons. Christmas lights were strung on wires and about twenty real snow-flocked Christmas trees emanated a lovely pine fragrance. It was a memorable evening as we danced the night away in this Winter Wonderland. 'Julie, I like the way Donnie dances.' We all catch our breath before the music begins. S HVSH Q3H0VS THE HISTORY of the CLASS of ’88 Like all good things, they must come to an end. For the Class of 1988, four great years of high school came to an end on May 19,1988. This was the final day of school for the Seniors, and as they entered the school for the last time, a myriad of thoughts flashed through their minds. Many were thinking of the future, what they would do, where they would go, and what they would accomplish. Others were wondering if they would ever see their classmates again after they went their separate ways. But all of the seniors let their minds drift back to their days at good old Sacred Heart. Clips of football games, pep rallies, and school dances raced in front of them as though they had happened yesterday. Suddenly, the seniors were back at their first day of high school. One word can describe that day — WET!!! “It was utter chaos,” said Eric Voegele, “it was wild! We spent the whole day mopping floors because the new roof wasn’t completed yet, and it had started to rain!” The rest of the year was a bit drier than that first day, but it was just as eventful. The new freshmen didn’t always know what was going on, but the upper-classmen showed them the ropes. The seniors treated the frosh to pizza and then all joined in a game of softball. Many of the seniors bought their little brothers and sisters” gifts. “I got a can of catfood for my cat, Ming, who had just died a few weeks earlier,” sobbed Jennie Dixon. Many of the freshmen blended right in by joining in the many activities that consume most of a high school students time. Many participated in football, volleyball, basketball, and track. Others joined in chorus and theatrical activities. But one thing was certain: all were gaining a sense of belonging because of these activities, and all were very busy. “I was busy keeping the bench warm, doing my homework, and just going out and having fun, said Jackie McGinnis about her freshman year. As their first year came to an end, the freshmen had really grown up. They were no longer wet-behind-the-ears. They had seen a lot of action. The football and girls’ basketball team were State Tourney Qualifiers. Some had roles in the school musical Snoopy. And all had seen their share of school dances. The Class of 1988 entered their sophomore year bringing with them the lessons of the previous year. That year was full of excite- ment and sorrow. The class ordered their class rings. Almost all of them joined in the school musical. Anything Goes. And others were gaining experience on the athletic teams. On December 28, 1985, a former classmate, Rodney Mez, died in a shooting accident. He had been a part of our class for nine years. His humor, energy, and intelligence will always be remembered, and his memory will always be revered. The Class of ’88 emerged into their junior year with a stark realization - it was time to get serious and raise money to pay for prom! “I was a basket case,” said Anne Simon who was the junior class president, “I was nervous all the time!” In all probability, their junior year was the most hectic for the Class of ’88. During the fall, the class wowed a large audience of Irish supporters with a parody on the “Brady Bunch” for the Homecoming Skit. Following the skit, the class warmed Irish Spirits with the traditional Bon Fire. In the winter, the juniors got the whole school in the Christmas Spirit by decorating the Teihen Gym for the Christmas Formal. In May, the class kindled spring-time romance by producing a great prom. The theme was “Under the Light of the Silvery Moon.” It was a big year for the juniors who played sports. Mike Knobbe was chosen for the All-Conference Football Team; Angie Hel- mick. Conference Volleyball, Basketball and All-State Honorable mention. She also went to State in the high jump with team-mate Anne Simon who qualified for long-jump. David Finck qualified in the discus for the boys’ track team. SENIORS!!!!!! They yelled it loud at pep rallies. They scribbled it on their book covers and on black boards. Their last year had finally come. The Class of ’88 expected their last year to be their easiest. They soon realized how wrong they were. It was the busiest and most rewarding year in sports. The football and volleyball teams qualified for state. The boys’ basketball team was the Class D-l State Basketball Champions. And in track, Anne Simon qualified for state in the long jump and 400 m relay; Jackie McGinnis in the 400m relay; Shelli Olberding in the discus and 400m relay. David Finck, Mike Knobbe, and David Keithley made All-Conference teams in Football. David Finck made All-Conference team in Basketball. Dee Slominski, Shelli Olberding, and Angie Helmick made All-Conference teams in Volleyball. Shelli Olberding, Angie Helmick and Anne Simon received All-State Honorable Mention and Dee Slominski received All-State Second Team. Angie Helmick received All-Conference First Team and Anne Simon received All Conference Second Team for basketball. Both received All-State Honorable Mention, also. Other items kept the seniors on their toes, also. Applying to colleges, fighting about the class colors and flower, and choosing the perfect announcements. After all this, the seniors needed a well deserved break. This came in March when they all gathered for the Senior Retreat in Hastings, Nebraska. The class got in touch with who they, their friends, and God were. It was like getting acquainted all over again. I can say, that I learned at least one new thing about each member of my class,” said Ofi Silva, “It was a great experience.” The last bell of the day rang, and all the reminiscing was rudely interrupted. The seniors walked out of Sacred Heart's doors for the last time as students. However, they carried with them the experiences of a life-time. They would always remember the endless “Harlans” on Saturday Night and the VCR Movies at O’Grady’s and Simon’s. The narrow escapes from the dragnet of Fr. Benton and the odd voices that only Shelli Olberding could come up with. The get-togethers at “The Farm,” the last slow song at the dance, and the “Breakfast Club.” The fights, the tears and the jokes and laughs. For the Class of 1988, a chapter of their lives ended on May 19. But the memories and lessons from that chapter will stay with them for a lifetime, and that’s what is important. 42 — Danny O’Grady IRISH BOOSTERS $33 Patrons Wilde Tool Co., Inc.
