IRISH SHOW DETERMINATION The fighting Irish played tough all season. Howev- er, their determination did not yield any victories for the team. The season did end on a happy note. Four people were chosen for All-Conference: Steve Taft, Mike Knohbe, and Joe Kirkendall made the first team. Greg Slominski received Honorable Mention. It was a season of disappointment for the seniors, but one of ex- perience for the underclassmen. IRISH VOLLEYBALL The 1986 volleyball season was one that was filled with hard work and determination. They beat state-rated teams which proved they could play with the best of them. The highlight of the season was when the girls placed second in the Galaxy Conference. They were also run- ners-up in sub-districts. Their final record was 11-9. Team members are from front left: Julie Kiekhaefer, Lizzie Weddle, Patty Liberty, Felicia Bachman, Trisha Kirkendall, Trish Frederick, Shelli Olberding, Angie Kiekhaefer, Anne Simon, Jennie Dixon, Tracy O’Grady, Coach Linda Kirkendall. Chris Knobbe was crowned queen and Steve Taft was crowned king. Spirit week had various themes for each day. We dressed as cowboys, “nerds”, signed T-shirts, and went wild with hairdos. Friday was the traditional “green” day. The juniors wrote and produced a skit, “The Brady Bunch”, and built the bonfire. The seniors decorated the school, and the class truck, “Crash.” At half-time of the S.H. - Pawnee City game, the royalty was crowned. A dance at Teihen gym concluded a week of festivi- ties. THE BRADY BUNCH 26 A NIGHT TO REMEMBER Is everyone ready? Don’t be so shy girls. Christmas Formal, 1986 - the Living Ro- sary was followed by a dance. The juniors decorated in green, red and silver. The sen- iors trimmed the tree. Freshmen and sopho- mores served refreshments. It was a special night for everyone. SILVERY MOON KEEPS ON SHINING 28 CONGRATULATIONS AND FAREWELL The night was full of a sense of achievement and sadness. The letters and awards were given out to each of the athletes. Head coach of basketball at Peru, John Gibbs, was the guest speaker. He talked about how you need determination, goals and God in life. It was a night also to say farewell to Coach John Banks. A typical fight in the presentation of “The Little Red Schoolhouse at the “Spring Fling in April. The speech department under the direction of Marcia Schwartz was very busy in '86-’87. For the first time in many years, the Speech II class presented a play in fall competition, “Mr. Winkler’s Birthday Party.” (See pictures at right.) Then in the spring, we fielded a full speech team for Galaxy and district con- tests. Danny O’Grady, Eric Voegele, and Ofelia Silva narrowly missed going to state in individual events, and the oral interpretation group (see below) just missed a berth with their blockbuster. Others on the team who also did well were Deirdre Slominski, Tracy O’Grady, Jackie McGinnis, David and Dan Wein- man, Anne Simon, Angie Kiekhaefer, Matt Bauman, and Buck Sells. In April, the music and drama de- partments united to present a variety program, “The Spring Fling.” Who is that lady in those glasses with that cane? Abby (Jennie Dixon) and Martha (Ofelia Silva) explain how they poison little old men to their nephew (Matt Knobbe) in a cutting from Arsenic and Old Lace” which won first at the Galaxy and second at district. Won’t you help a poor, defenseless woman? All I ask is that you give me what I have coming to me.” A duet by Danny W. and Jackie from Neil Simon’s “The Good Doctor. 31 Who is helping who? Are they catching on, Kristi? Studying hard!! Let’s see your license, Sir. Just hanging around! Did you really make those? CANDID MEMORIES 32 Catching Rays!! (When track meets are fun.) NOW AT THE TOP OF THE HILL, WE TAKE A LOOK BACK ON GOOD TIMES In August of 1983, ten freshman entered Sacred Heart High School for the first time. Filled with hope and excitement, we were ready to take on any challenges. For our initiation, seniors chose us as their little brothers and sisters. They provided lunch for us and treated us to a softball game. Mrs. Janis Fischer, our class sponsor, supervised as class officers were elected: Chris Knobbe, president; Greg Slominski, vice-president; Amy Bauman, secretary; and Teresa Sells, trea- surer. Steve Taft was a new member of the class. The class of 1987 entered their second year filled with en- thusiasm. Under the leadership of our officers Steve Taft, presi- dent; Chris Knobbe, vice-president, Brett Keller, secretary- treasurer and our class sponsor, Marcia Schwartz, our class held many cake raffles and cleaned the stadium for money. As our junior year started, we realized we were one step closer to being seniors. This year many things depended on us. Under our class sponsor, Steve Holland, officers were elected: president, Amy Bauman; vice-president, Chris Knobbe; and secretary-treasurer, Joe Kirkendall. We gained Marcy Bragg as a classmate for one year. Our first challenge was preparing the bonfire and Home- coming skit. We presented our version of Mr. Roger’s Neigh- borhood.” Greg Slominski played the leading role of Mr. Rogers. This was followed by the lighting of the bonfire. Our next project was decorating the gym for the Christmas Formal. We decorated in pink, maroon and silver. Last of all, was planning for prom. WE decorated in senior class colors of pink and aqua. Tradition was broken and music was provided by a D.J., Tracy Johnson of KFRX. Everyone attended County Government Day and Amy Bauman attended the 1986, Bereuter Institute. Chris Knobbe received All-Conference second team in volleyball and All-Con- ference in basketball. Greg Slominski received All-Conference in basketball and Joe Kirkendall got All-Conference and All- State in football. Now we are seniors! This year will be one we will never for- get. In our class elections Amy Bauman was elected president; Steve Taft, vice-president; and Phil Scheitel was elected secre- tary-treasurer. Our class sponsor was Linda Kirkendall. On Senior-Freshman Day we entertained our little brothers and sisters. We fed them pizza and welcomed them with a soft- ball game. Homecoming was the first major activity of the year. The juniors presented a skit entitled The Brady Bunch along with the bonfire. We painted the class truck Crash along with un- derclassmen’s cars. At half-time of the football game against Pawnee City, Steve Taft was crowned king and Chris Knobbe was crowned queen. Everyone in the class was an attendant. It was followed by a tradiationdl dance. In November we went on retreat to Crosier Monestary in Hastings. Brothers Mark and Gus made it an experience we will always remember. In December the seniors decorated the tree and in January we ordered announcements and were fitted for our gowns. During our final year we all played a big part in sports. Joe Kirkendall, Greg Slominski, Steve Taft and Chris Knobbe re- ceived many awards such as All-Conference and Honorable Mention. At semester another new classmate was added, Doris Vela- quez from Paraguay. On May 8, Jr.-Sr. Prom was held at the Country Club. The juniors decorated in our class colors of black, rose and silver. Pre-prom was held at Brett Keller’s house. The meal was buffet style and music was provided by KFRX of Lincoln. Now at the top of the hill, ready for graduation, we look back once again before starting down the other side; we remem- ber yesterday and dream of tomorrow. As we leave good ole Sa- cred Heart we take with us a sense of pride, knowledge and ac- complishment, and the most important thing - many memories. The class of 1987 includes: Amy Beth Bauman, Brett Allen Keller, Joseph Micheal Kirkendall, Christine Renee Knobbe, Philip Virgil Scheitel, Teresa Franees Sells, Gregory John Slom- inski, Steven Joseph Taft, and Doris Velaquez. 33 IRISH BOOSTERS $33 PATRONS Wilde Tool Co., Inc.
