Once We Followed........ “We once followed, now we lead.” The words echoed in our heads as we marched to the familiar beat of Pomp and Circumstance. It was the moment we had all waited for. The time when we would say good- bye to our childhood and look to the future. As we took our seats, the memories of the past four years came flooding back: the dances, the games, time spent with friends, the rowdy times and the sad times. We remembered them all. It was hard to describe the emotion we felt as each of us received our diplomas. It was a mixture of happiness for what we had to look forward to, and of sadness for what we leave behind. Whatever each of us was thinking though, there was always the knowledge that we were all going our separate ways and were about to encounter the biggest challenge of our lives: choosing a path to follow. As the ceremony ended, and we marched down the aisle for the last time, we realized that after following for so many years, we were finally ready to lead others as we had been led and look towards the future with open-mindedness, at the opportunities it offers and at the challenges we must conquer. ......Now We Lead 13 Class of 1986 Shell and Moni try to think of a quick excuse to get out of class after the bell rings. The Greatest Years of Our Life History of the Class of 1986 In August of 1982, six freshmen entered Sacred Heart High School filled with hope and excitement, as we prepared to face the challenges of high school. On Senior-Freshmen Day. the Seniors provided lunch for their “little brothers and sisters.” Janis Fischer supervised as class officers were picked. Roger Helmick was elected president; Fat Knobbe, vice- president; and Joe Dixon, secretary-treasurer. Our first task was to furnish refreshments for the Christmas Formal. We all participated in the Living Rosary. After the rosary, we all danced in the Tiehen gym. In sports. Shell Slominski set a school record in track for the mile. Two of our classmates were in the musical “Little Mary Sunshine. The class of 1986 entered their second year of high school with enthusiasm. The only new teacher that joined us this year was John Ranks, and leaving us was Don Armstrong and Linda Ferry. Leaving our class was Shelly Kopf, and Shannon Shafer. But joining our class was Moni Parsons. Under the leadership of our officers: Joe Dixon, president; Shell Slominski. vice- president; and Tom Gerdes, sec-treasurer, our class held many cake raffles and cleaned the stadium to earn money for our class. Under the supervision of Steve Holland and Rachel Voesel, class officers elected were: Fat Knobbe. president; Moni Parsons, vice-president; and Shell Slominski, sec-treasurer. In the beginning of this year, the seniors each took a couple of freshmen as their little brothers and sisters. We fed them a special meal and played volleyball in the afternoon. Homecoming was the first major activity of the fall. The skit entitled Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood was presented by the juniors, as well as a bonfire. W’e painted the class truck and named it “Graciela and decorated the school in green and white. The meal was made by the mothers and a pre-prom party was held by Moni Parsons. Music was provided by Tracy Johnson, and later a movie was shown at the drive-in. As our senior year comes to a close we look back on some of our very memorable moments. The many times we have cruised Harlan, met at Dewey’s Beach, the card parties at Roger Helmick’s, the shampoo bottles on retreat. The late night visits to the carwash, and the monopoly games at 2:00 a.m. As we leave dear old Sacred Heart we take with us knowledge, pride in ourselves and our school, a sense of accomplishment, and many fond memories that will last a lifetime.
