The eager Freshmen were involved in many activities during their first year. As a welcome to high school, Seniors offered them dinner and challenged them to a softball game. Following tradition, the Freshmen pitched in and helped at the Christmas Formal and Parent’s Night. Cake raffles after cake raffles were held to make money, and they also sold spirit ribbons and buttons as a money-making project. They also held a garage sale. The Freshmen had an eventful year and they are anxious to begin their sophomore year. Wonder what David’s thinking about doing? 5 Amy Bauman Brett Keller Joe Kirkendal! They over saw all the class projects and kept track of their money. The sophomore class was small, but raised a lot of money. They cleaned up Jug-Brown Stadium after football games, and held many cake raffles at football and basketball games. They were kept busy serving banquets. They helped serve the Parent’s Night party and the Traveler’s Protection Agency banquet. The highlight for the class this year was ordering their class rings. Many stones and backgrounds were ordered and many more months were spent waiting for their rings to come back. Now with their rings and enthusiasm, the sophomores are all set for the last two years of high school. 6 Their Second Time Around Steve, what are you whispering to Shan- non? Or should we ask? And what are you whispering, Brett? Joe and Phil wrestle with an unknown bud. I wonder if Sister or Coach knew about this manhandling. pnoits Well, Coach, don’t work too hard. Aren’t you supposed to sweat in P.E. class? Joe seems to be “mapping” out some plans. Phil, you’re so cute!! 7 union; Pat Knobbe Moni Parsons Shell Slominski The class of 1986 started the year off with a bang. 1 he skit for the Homecoming festivities was “Irish Court”, which was a take off of the “People’s Court”. Following the skit, came the bonfire which was built by the Junior boys on the practice field. Throughout the year the Juniors were busy trying to raffle off cakes at games. Also at Homecoming and at the State Football Play- Offs, the Juniors sold balloons to raise money. The annual Christmas Formal was decorat- ed with metallic blue and silver streamers, with a stairway for the centerpiece. Music was provid- ed by John Barker. Prom was held on May 3, with the theme ’Dancing In The Dark.’ The color scheme was lavender and silver metallic. Music was played by Bad Reputation. Junior class officers are Pat Knobbe, President; Shell Slominski. Vice President; Moni Parsons, Secretary Treasurer. 8 Holding Out For Next Year Shell. Joe. Rog and Moni sit and plan for a weekday mass. It’s obvious that they all have different feelings toward it. Shell and Joe look like they’re having a good time. Yes, Joe, we all know you’re the mighty Fine number one guy. At right: Once again the feelings for class are differently viewed by the Juniors. The latest in fashion! We won our Sub-District but were beaten by Diller for the ticket to State. At the end of the season, these awards were announced, Kristi Olberding was selected All- Conference and All-State. Amy Pokorny was named to the All-State Honorable Mention list. Angie Dixon made All-Conference First Team and Shell Slominski All-Conference Second Team. Although we got beat in the Galaxy Conference, we were determined to go all the way in Districts. And for the first time ever at Sacred Heart, the girls basketball team went to State. We defeated and got our revenge on Diller. In the process, Angie Dixon, Amy Pokorny and Gina Bippes made All-Conference Second Team, while Kristi Olberding made First Team and also All-State First Team. Kristi also had the record and highest average for rebounds in Class D-2. The season was filled with a lot of fun and we accomplished most of our goals. They took second place in the Galaxy Conference Tourney and also took second in Districts. The boys ended their season with a 9-9 record. Annette, Gina and Angie decorate the tree. What’s so funny, Angie?; do you remember?? On December 17th, the students had their annual Christmas For- mal. The day began with the Juniors and Seniors decorating the gym for the dance that night. The Living Rosary started at 7:00 P.M. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Goltz portrayed Mary and Jo- seph while Tim Kirken- dall portrayed baby Je- sus. The music for the evening was provided by “Lou” Barker. Moni lends a helping hand to Annette. 30 What’s new!?! Dancing In The Dark Janet, Gina, Amy, Kristi, Moni, Mary and Angie pose for a pre-prom picture. These guys and gals are just sitting around relaxing before the dance. What a cute couple! And below Ann and Roger, Pat gives a speech before the prom dinner. The people at the head table begin signing the prom books before the lights go out. “Dancing In The Dark” was the theme for the Junior-Senior Prom of 1985. The annual dance was held at the Elk’s Club just as the banquet was. A pre-Prom party was held before at Pokorny’s while Keithley’s hosted the breakfast after the movie at Breezy Hill, which was The Thief Of Hearts. BAD REPI TA- TION provided the music at the dance. During the day the Junior class missed school to decorate the Elk’s in the Senior color scheme of lavender and silver metallic streamers. Silver stars decorated the walls and hung from the ceiling. A pink and lavender net centerpiece drew many compliments. It was a glorious evening of laughter, fun, food and good friends. Junior-Senior prom was a night we will all remember. 31 Angie and Pat enjoy the party. An Evening Of Activity Master of Ceremonies, Don Coupe, welcomes the guest speaker, Jerry Joy, from Peru State College. The 1985 Sacred Heart Activities Banquet was held on May 5. The guest speaker was Jerry Joy from Peru State College. He talked about realizing where you came from and to be proud of it, and using that pride in our future plans and in what we do. Athletic awards were given by John Banks, Denise Kirkendall and Linda Kirkendall. John Nixon gave out the KTNC Athletic awards. Sister Mary Denise handed out the academic awards. The second annual Presidential Academic Fitness Award was given to students who partici- pated in sports and excelled academically. Come on, Kris, get with it. and pay a little more attention! The freshmen girls flash their pearly whites, while Deirdre demonstrates how to throw a dirty look to the cameraman. 33 Diane Marie Schlosser 1967-1984 Diane Schlosser had been our classmate for six years and in this short time, she had become a special part of our class. She was a very bright, easy-going, and compassionate girl who always had a smile for everyone. But on January 4 1984 Diane was taken away from us, and her family, in a fatal car accident. I his year she would have graduated with us, in the class of 1985. So, in loving memory, we dedicate this yearbook to her, our fellow classmate and friend. 34 History Of The In August of 1981, fourteen freshman entered Sacred Heart High School for the first time. Filled with hope of excitement and achievement, we prepared to face the challenges of high school life. Our class sponsor, Mrs. Marcia Schwartz, supervised as officers were selected. (Mike Frederick, president; Amy Pokorny, vice president, Joe Fischer, treasurer and Mary Knobbe, secre- tary.) Our first task as a class was to furnish refreshments for the Christmas Formal. We participated in the Living Rosary and then moved over to the gym for the dance. Twelve of us freshman were in Chorus and participated in the musical “Oliver” under the direction of Teresa Lesiak. Two new teachers were added to our staff, Doug Fritz and Janis Fischer. As freshman, the boys won the Knights of Columbus Freshman-Sophomore Tournament. The Varsity basketball team went to State. As sophomores, five new teachers were added. Father Paul Witt, Sister Carmen Echevarria, Steve Holland, Don Armstrong and Sister Delia Lawless. Miss Lesiak and Mr. Fritz, as well as Lonnie Ford and Father Benton left us. Under the leadership of Mike Frederick, president; Tom Sells, v-president; Scott Smith, secretary and Mary Knobbe treasurer, we held many cake raffles, and served banquets to raise money for upcoming expenses. Our class gained two new students, Diane Adams and Kris Peniska. The big event this year was ordering our class rings and waiting for them to arrive. Eight of us participated in the musical “Little Mary Sunshine”, directed by Steve Holland. During our junior year that year John Banks, Trudi Buren- heide, Sister Dolores Hall and Rachael Yoesel became a part of our faculty as Don Armstrong, Sister Carmen, and Sister Delia left us. With Steve Holland and Rachael Yoesel as our sponsors, and Mike Frederick, president; Janet Finck, v-president; Tom Sells, secretary and Scott Smith, treasurer, our class began one of the biggest challenges we had. We prepared the skit and bonfire for the Homecoming festivities. The skit was called “Irish Feud because it was taken from the number one game show. Family Feud. It was followed by the lighting of the bonfire which the boys built the night before. During the Christmas season, we raffled off a Cabbage Patch Kid, Kellie Clara, to raise some big bucks. She was eventually adopted by NiNi Frederick. We also decorated the gym for the Christmas Formal in red and green and silver streamers. On January 4. 1984. a classmate of ours was killed in a car accident. Diane Schlosser was born seventeen years earlier in Fort Bliss, Texas. Next, the Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Elk s Club. We Class Of 1985 decorated the dance floor in maroon and silver streamers. Music was provided by “Splash”. We all participated in County Government Day and in the musical, “No, No, Nanette.” The football season ended with a 5-5 record and a State Play Off berth. The boys bowed out the first game. Tom Sells made All- Conference Honorable Mention. In volleyball the girls were Southern Galaxy Champs and District Runner Up. Girls basket- ball record ended 10-5. Kristi Olberdin was chosen All-Conference First Team and then Honorable Mention All-State. The boys won the Galaxy tourney and won their District only to be beaten by Filley in Regionals. In track, Janet Finck was the only girl to make State. Our Senior year will be one we will never forget. Our sponsor was Linda Kirkendall and Mike Frederick was president; Janet Finck, vice-president; Mary' Knobbe, secretary and Gina Bippes, treasurer. We lost Mrs. Fischer but gained John Barker with Robert Weber to replace him at semester. We picked our little brothers and sisters and bought them lunch and then played softball for an afternoon. The football season was great. The boys’ record was 8-3. They again made State Play-Offs and stayed in for the second round. Mike Frederick, Greg Liberty, Mark Meinzer and Tom Sells were all named first team All-Conference. Tom made All-State Honorable Mention. Volleyball’s record was 15-4; we won Galaxy and were District runners-up. Kristi Olberding and Angie Dixon were All-Conference and Kristi and Amy Pokorny were All-Staters Honorable Mention. Homecoming began with decorating Tom’s truck and naming her “Lucy” for Amy’s mom. Greg Liberty and Gina Bippes were crowned King and Queen at the half time. Other candidates were Janet Finck, Tom Sells, Mike Frederick and Mary Knobbe. In basketball, the girls went to State for the first time ever and ended their season 15-4. Kristi made All-Conference First Team with Amy Pokorny, Angie Dixon and Gina Bippes on Second Team. Kristi made All-State First Team. The guys’ record was 9- 9 with Tom and Mark both named to All-Conference Second Team. Kristi made it to State in track. For our retreat we went to St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth. Our class trip was to W’orlds of Fun in K.C.; and our prom was held on May 3, 1985. Bad Reputation was the band and “Thief of Hearts was the feature film at the drive-in. It’s time for us to say goodbye to Sacred Heart, but we’ll never forget this school and our days together. Class members are: Gina Marie Bippes.
