Three stars to state The 1983 boy's track team are, bottom, left to right. Joe Dixon, Todd Scheitel, Brian Hoy and David Aitken. Standing: Pat Knobbe, John Foreschl. John Fischer, Chris Rathman, John Watton, Roger Helmick and Ron Hoffmann. Although mother nature wasn't always kind to the 1983 boys track team, the members were able to bring home some medals. With 14 boys on the team, their talents were spread throughout the events. Three boys were able to overcome the cold weather and qualify for the state track meet held May 20-21 at Omaha Burke. John Fischer and Chris Rathman both went in the shot put with Chris bringing home a school place medal. John Froeschl also went in the 800 meters. At the end of the year, a large part of the team earned a letter. Above clockwise, John Fischer shows determination in his face: at left, the three state qualifiers are shown. Cold weather stalls Tracksters To the twelve girls who made up the 1983 track team, a total history of the year can be said in one word — cold. Although the weather was mean, much progress was shown over year. The Southeast Invitational, held at Conestoga, was run in the snow. Although no one did make it to state for the girls, three records were set during the year. Shell Slominski broke the record in the 1600 meter, Janet Finck, Angie Dixon, Shell Slominski and Theresa Knobbe broke the record in the 1600 meter relay, and Kristi Olberding broke her own record in the high jump. Through all the hard work spent practicing and the disappointments of defeats, the track ••stars gained a sense of accomplishments and team unity. Janet Finck shows off her best form as she soars over the hurdles. Members of the 1983 track team were, top row: Student manager Lisa Keller. Amy Majerus. Amy Slominski. Kristi Olberding, Gina Bippes and student manager Mary Coupe. Middle row: Janet Finck, Angie Dixon. Ann Schuetz and Shannon Pierson. Bottom row: Amy Pokorny. Kris Peniska. Shell Slominski and Theresa Knobbe. 20
