The skit was a take-off of the movie Rocky-III. The bonfire was built on the practice field. Next we were to decorate for the annual Christmas formal. Decorations included red, green, and silver metalic streamers, and a traditional tree decorated by the seniors to complete the Christmas spirit. In May we were to put on the Junior-Senior Prom. Music was provid- ed by “SAVIOR FAIRE from Lincoln. Nebraska. Decorations were blue and silver streamers, the senior class colors. The food was served by the junior class mothers, and the parents of the junior class officers were chaperons. 8 Leaders of this year’s Junior class include from left to right: Greg Goltz - President. The rings were ordered in January and our excitement grew as the beginning of May approached when the class rings would come. It was a joyous time on the day they arrivedl The sophomores also worked hard on making money for their junior year. Included in the money making projects were picking up corn, cleaning Jug Brown Stadium, cake raffles and popping popcorn at the basketball games. We also sponsored a school dance. 10 Love those “Baby Doll” Heading the Sophomores for the 1982-83 year were: Mike Frederick. President; pajamas. Amy! Tom Sells, top. One of their money-making projects was the ever popular cake raffles, of which they had many. This year the Freshmen came up with a new way to earn their money. They had conces- sion stands at the junior high football games. Other fund- raising activities included re- freshments at auctions, and a bake sale during the Falls City sidewalk bazaar. Throughout the year the Freshmen participated in sports, cheered the Irish teams on, and took part in the school musical. Their talents shone through in all they did, and they will certainly be an asset to Sacred Heart in their remaining High School years. With Coach Kirkendall and four returning lettermen leading the team, the Volleyballers kept their spirits high and determination going throughout the season. Kristi Olberding was named first team All-Conference, and Amy Slominski was chosen for the second team. The 1982 Football season was new and different due to the change to eight-man football, after the years of the standard eleven-man game. The Irish ended the season with a disap- pointing 2-7 record, but valuable experience was gained concern- ing the new rules and regulations of the eight-man game. Sacred Heart was proud to have four fine players named to the Galaxy All-Conference teams. Bill Hel- mick and Kenny Schawang made first team while Dan Goltz and Chris Rathman were awarded with honorable mentions. Here, the Irish, under the coaching abilities of Don Arm- strong, made it to the District finals. Through their ups and downs, the boys gained experience. Although the weather was mean, much progress was shown over year. The Southeast Invitational, held at Conestoga, was run in the snow. Although no one did make it to state for the girls, three records were set during the year. Shell Slominski broke the record in the 1600 meter, Janet Finck, Angie Dixon, Shell Slominski and Theresa Knobbe broke the record in the 1600 meter relay, and Kristi Olberding broke her own record in the high jump. Through all the hard work spent practicing and the disappointments of defeats, the track ••stars gained a sense of accomplishments and team unity. Although mother nature wasn't always kind to the 1983 boys track team, the members were able to bring home some medals. With 14 boys on the team, their talents were spread throughout the events. Three boys were able to overcome the cold weather and qualify for the state track meet held May 20-21 at Omaha Burke. John Fischer and Chris Rathman both went in the shot put with Chris bringing home a school place medal. John Froeschl also went in the 800 meters. The seniors decorated the school and also “Renie”, The Homecoming vehicle, named after Chris’s mom. The annual Pep Rally and Bonfire were held in Tiehen Gym on Friday. The skit was named “Rocky III” which was presented before going to the bonfire on the field. Dan Goltz, Senior class President led the rosary as students walked slowly through the church holding their candles. Tim Slominski portrayed the Christ child as Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Goltz posed as Mary and Joseph. The dance was held on Saturday evening instead of the usual Sunday. Bob Strat- ton provided the music as the students danced the first dance with their parents. As the Seniors trimmed the tree, the Juniors decorated the gym in metallic red, green and silver. The evening left us filled with special memor- ies of the Christmas season. John Dixon takes his turn during the Living Rosary. Students mingle around refreshments during the formal. The theme of this years Junior- Senior Prom was “We’ve Got To- night”. The dance was held in the Elk’s Club Ballroom. The ballroom was decorated by the juniors in the senior class colors, blue and silver. The buffet-style meal of bar- becued beef and or pork, scalloped potatoes, green beans, combination salad, and hot rolls was prepared by the junior’s parents. Strawberry shortcake was served by the fresh- man and sophomore servers for dessert. This year the music was provid- ed by the band “SAVIOR FAIRE” from Lincoln, Nebraska. Chaperones of the dance were the parents of the junior class officers. Many couples and groups posed for prom pictures which were taken again this year by Kevin Binder of Pawnee City. There is a special something in the air at Sacred Heart. A certain sense of togetherness is present. It is apparent in the ball games, the musicals, and in all the other various activities. There is a unique bond that forms between the members of each class. It makes us more than friends. It makes us a family. With our small number, we are able to share more together, to know each other better, and to do things in a family spirit. We are thankful for our years at Sacred Heart, the knowledge we have gained, the many happy memories and especially the many friendships we have shared. 33 History of the In August, of 1979, 12 Freshmen entered Sacred Heart High School for the first time. Filled with hope of excitement and achievement, we prepared to face the challenges of high school, or mainly just those which confronted us as Freshmen. Initiation was the first of these challenges. For our initiation, a pair of Seniors chose a Freshman for their little brother or sister. On Senior-Freshman Day, the Seniors provided lunch for their little brothers or sisters. After lunch, teams were picked for a game of softball. Senior girls and Freshman boys played the Senior boys and Freshman girls. Sister Mary Denise, our class sponsor, supervised as class officers were elected. (Dan Goltz, President; Steve Coonce, Vice-President; Lisa Keller, Secretary; and Chris Rathman, Treasurer.) After class leadership was established, plans were made for the upcoming year. Our first task was to furnish refreshments for the Christmas Formal, which was something new to all of us. We all participated in the Living Rosary. After the rosary, a formal was held in the Tiehen Gym. For the first dance, the girls danced with their fathers and the boys danced with their mothers. Four new teachers were added to our faculty our first year. They were Sister Mary Denise Sternitzke, Father James Benton, Sister Ruth Barron, and Miss Ann Ourada. The Class of '83 entered their second year of high school with much enthusiasm. The only new teacher added to the faculty this year was Miss Teresa Lesiak while Miss Ann Ourada left us. This year our class lost Julie Kaiser, but gained Rhonda and Robert Roettger. Under the leadership of our officers (President Dan Goltz, Vice-President Steve Coonce, Secretary Chris Rathman, and Treasurer Mary Coupe.) Cake raffles were held and popcorn was popped at the home basketball games to boost our treasury. The big event we looked forward to this year was ordering our class rings and we waited in anticipation for the day they would arrive. Sophomores played a big part in the drama and music productions this year. Rhonda Roettger, Lisa Keller, and Robert Roettger each held a substantial role in the drama class' Candide. Many sophomores participated in the spring musical Diamond Studs . In the State Track meet this year, Chris Rathman was the only sophomore to participate. As our Junior year started, we realized it was just one more step to being a senior. During that year we lost three students, Steve Coonce, Dennis Bennett, and Denise Yoesel. Doug Fritz and Janis Fischer joined our faculty that year, and Sister Ruth and Sister Mary Hilaria left us. Under the supervision of Coach Lonnie Ford, and the class officers (President Dan Goltz, Vice-President John Froeschl, Secretary Lisa Keller and Treasurer Mary Coupe) our class prepared to conquer the many challenges facing us. Our first challenge was preparing for the bonfire and homecoming. We presented our version of the number one soap opera. General Hospital, which we entitled Irish Hospital. We suffered one minor casualty when Ron Hoffman was struck solidly in the temple with Rob Roettger’s guitar. This was followed by the lighting of the bonfire on the practice field. Our next project was the gym for the Christmas Formal which was held on December 19th. Music was provided by Keith Marx. The Junior-Senior Prom of 1982 was held at the Elks Lodge on May 6th. The music was supplied by the band Extra. The meal was prepared by our mothers and pictures were taken by Kevin Binder of Pawnee City. All juniors attended County Government Day where much insight was gained pertaining to the duties of our county officials. Many students displayed their talents in the spring musical, Oliver.” In basketball this year the Irish boys showed off their talents. For the first time since 1974, the Irish boys made it to the State Tournament. Our Junior boys included Dan Goltz, Chris Rathman and John Froeschl. The boys ended their season with a 19-5 record. And once again, Chris Rathman made it to State in the discus. 34 class of 1983 This year, 1983, our Senior year, will be the one that we will never forget. Our class sponsor was Mrs. Linda Kirkendall and in our class elections, the slogan appeared to be VOTE MALE, as the girls were outnumbered 6-4 by the boys, who therefore gained the majority vote. Our Senior class officers were Dan Goltz, President, Vice-President Bill Helmick, Secretary Ron Hoffman, and Treasurer Chris Rathman. From our faculty we lost Coach Lonnie Ford, Doug Fritz, Father James Benton and Teresa Lesiak. But we gained Coach Don Armstrong, Father Paul Witt, Sister Carmen and Steve Holland. Deeanna Sells left us, but Rich McAdams joined us and Dennis Bennett came back after a year of absence. However, Rich left us before our final year was over. At the beginning of this year we paired up and chose a member of the Freshman class as our little brother or sister. Included on our menu for lunch was spaghetti, pizza and sardines. After lunch we moved to the gym where we picked teams and played volleyball. In football. Bill Helmick was named to the All-Conference first team and Dan Goltz and Chris Rathman gained honorable mentions. Homecoming was our first major activity as Seniors. A skit entitled “Rocky III” and a bonfire were presented by the Junior class. For our senior vehicle we used Goltz’s El Camino, which we named “Renie after Chris’s mom. Bill Helmick and Mary Coupe were crowned Homecoming King and Queen during half-time of the Irish-Pawnee City Indian football game. Other candidates were Lisa Keller, Rhonda Roettger, Chris Rathman and Dan Goltz. We danced in the Tiehan gym to the music provided by Bob Stratton. On Saturday, December 18, the Seniors decorated the Christmas tree for the formal to be held that evening. In March, we went on our Senior Retreat at St. Mary's College in Leavenworth, with Father Paul Witt, Father Pat Murphy and Madaline Keller. A special unity was in the air on retreat, as we felt we grew a little closer to each other. In basketball, the boys made it to the district finals. Dan Goltz was named to the All-Conference first team. The spring musical “Little Mary Sunshine was presented. Seniors shined as Rhonda Roettger, Ron Hoffman, Lisa Keller and Dennis Bennett held leading roles. On Friday, May 6th, the Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Elks Club. The Juniors decorated the club the night before, using our class colors of dark blue, light blue and silver. The meal was provided by the junior mothers. Festivities began at 6 o’clock at a Pre-Prom Party hosted by Lisa Keller and Mary Coupe. The seniors and juniors then moved on to the Elks Club. Pictures were taken by Kevin Binder of Pawnee City. Music was provided by Savior-Faire of Lincoln. The show Raiders of the Lost Ark” was shown at the Breezy Hill Drive-In. The night ended with breakfast and party at the Roettger’s home. It was a night filled with fun and excitement. On May 15th, the Seniors ventured to Worlds of Fun. We met at the school parking lot at 8 o’clock. Mr. Dick Frederick drove the bus to Kansas City loaded with seniors and chaperones. We all enjoyed the rides and attended the shows. On our way home we stopped at Long John Silvers in St. Joseph. The only senior to compete in the State Track meet was Chris Rathman. He participated in shot and discus, and earned a silver second place medal in the shot. Now, the time has come when the Class of 1983 must say good-bye to good ole Sacred Heart. Our four years of high school will be four years we will never forget.
