Goals Achieved in Awards Banquet When a student works hard in academics or athletics he usually aims for a goal. This goal may be passing high school and entering a career after graduation. Yet, another goal can be the recognition of one's achievement in high school. Indeed, many of Sacred Heart's students accomplished this goal in the Sacred Heart Activities Banquet. During the banquet, Don Coupe, Master of Ceremonies, introduced the guest speaker, Glenn Cunningham. Cunningham is a member of the Track and Field Hall of Fame. He told students and parents alike that all things are possible with faith. Also, during the banquet Coach Ford and Coach Uher presented athletic awards to 25 high school boys and 15 high school girls while Sister Hilaria presented 12 academic awards. In the end, students felt proud of acheiving another goal. In the pictures, top right: Guest speaker Glenn Cunningham lets the laughs settle down after telling a joke. Some of his stories were very humorous, yet they all had a moral; middle right: Norberto Silva receives his academic awards from Don Coupe; bottom right: Coach Uher hands Mary Coupe her well deserved athletic award. 24

Starting at lower left and going clockwise: The Irish are in the lead as Don Strecker hands Jeff Oliver the baton for the 1600 meter relay. Pat Olberding demonstrates his calm, collective form while soaring past the 5'10' mark at the Galaxy Meet. The Irish had ten state qualifiers who made the trip to Omaha on May 22-23. In front are Jayne Stratton (qualifying in the 800 meter run and the 3200 meter relay), Amy Slominski (3200 meter relay), Vicki Rathman (discus), and Joyce Stratton and Theresa Knobbe (3200 meter relay). The girls finished with 9 points at the meet. Vicki Rathman placed second in the discus with a school record flip of 117 0', and the 3200 meter relay placed sixth overall. Throughout the year, the girls also set a new relay record with a time of 10:21.6. Jayne's time of 2:28.5 at the district track meet also was a new record. Qualifying for the boys were Don Strecker (3200 meter run, 1600 meter relay), Jeff Oliver (1600 meter relay), Chris Rathman (discus), and Pat Olberding and Doug Goltz (1600 meter relay). Two new records were set during the year in boys' track: the 400 meter relay team of Jeff, Doug, Kevin Smith, and Phil Knobbe bettered the old record with a time of 48.5, and Don Strecker's state-qualifying time in the 3200 meter run, 10:15.0, bettered his own record. Betsy Marx, in the white shorts, shows her graceful style while running the 100 meter low hurdles. Here's where all that hard practice pays off. Don Strecker manages to lead the pack in the 1600 meter run with Jeff Coonce keeping up with the pace in the sixth place position. 23
