Jeff Oliver, Tony Frederick; sixth row: Don Strecker, John Dixon; seventh row: Jerome Keithley, Tom Olberding; eighth row: Doug Goltz, David Kopetzky; top row: Pat Olberding, John Froeschl. Steve Hoy was not present for the picture. As spring began to thaw away the cold Nebraskan winter, thirty-one Sacred Heart students began to stretch out and jog for the upcoming track season. The Irish track team spent long weeks running practice relays and sprints, and their hard work was rewarded. Their accomplishments ranged from the girls' 3200 meter relay team-placing second at the Peru Invitational with a time of 10:37 to Jeff Oliver placing first at the Southeast Invitational Track Meet with a time of 55.0 seconds. Even with all the long hours spent practicing and all the disappointments brought about by defeat, the Irish track stars gained a sense of accomplishment and unity throughout the successful season. 22

The Irish- ettes, at 0-12 at one point in the year, refused to give up as they won two out of their last three games. The underclassmen also gained much needed experience as all 11 girls earned letters. Jayne Stratton, the team's leading scorer, was selected to the first team All-Conference. At the left: Vicki Rathman puts up a shot against Southeast Consolidated while Jayne and Joyce Stratton look on. At the bottom: Joyce Stratton shoots over the outstretched arm of an Elwood player while Janet Tauchen watches for a possible rebound. 21

Starting at lower left and going clockwise: The Irish are in the lead as Don Strecker hands Jeff Oliver the baton for the 1600 meter relay. Pat Olberding demonstrates his calm, collective form while soaring past the 5'10' mark at the Galaxy Meet. The Irish had ten state qualifiers who made the trip to Omaha on May 22-23. In front are Jayne Stratton (qualifying in the 800 meter run and the 3200 meter relay), Amy Slominski (3200 meter relay), Vicki Rathman (discus), and Joyce Stratton and Theresa Knobbe (3200 meter relay). The girls finished with 9 points at the meet. Vicki Rathman placed second in the discus with a school record flip of 117 0', and the 3200 meter relay placed sixth overall. Throughout the year, the girls also set a new relay record with a time of 10:21.6. Jayne's time of 2:28.5 at the district track meet also was a new record. Qualifying for the boys were Don Strecker (3200 meter run, 1600 meter relay), Jeff Oliver (1600 meter relay), Chris Rathman (discus), and Pat Olberding and Doug Goltz (1600 meter relay). Two new records were set during the year in boys' track: the 400 meter relay team of Jeff, Doug, Kevin Smith, and Phil Knobbe bettered the old record with a time of 48.5, and Don Strecker's state-qualifying time in the 3200 meter run, 10:15.0, bettered his own record. Betsy Marx, in the white shorts, shows her graceful style while running the 100 meter low hurdles. Here's where all that hard practice pays off. Don Strecker manages to lead the pack in the 1600 meter run with Jeff Coonce keeping up with the pace in the sixth place position. 23
