Among these were decorating for the Christmas Formal, attending the annual County Government Day, and preparing and financing the Junior-Senior Prom. Under the leadership of class sponsor Lonnie Ford and the class officers, the students sold concessions at auctions and sponsored a waterbed raffle to help cover the costs of these events. Guiding the class of '82 through its major decisions this year were these four young people. They were elected by their fellow classmates as the class officers at the end of the previous school year. Pictured above, starting from the left are Henry Silva, President; Ann Frederick, Secretary; Ann Scheitel, Treasurer; and Steve Hoy, Vice-President. 8 Class of '82 Meets Many Challenges Betsy Marx Ruth Murphy Kathy Nichols Pat Olberding Jeff Oliver Bryan Pounds Dave Richardson Mike Richardson Ann Scheitel Henry Silva Kevin Smith ABOVE: Kathy Aitken, class sponsor Coach Lonnie Ford, and Ann Frederick sample some of the many goodies that were distributed to the juniors at the Christmas party. Rob Roettger is in a winning frenzy while Dennis Bennett takes it in cool with a pop. While Americans were handling national and international situations like the Presidential campaign and the Iranian crisis, sophomores were also experiencing a new and challenging year. The problems of raising class money were solved by their selling popcorn at basketball games and holding cake raffles. Also entering this whirlpool of events were two new sophomores, Rob and Rhonda Roettger. Naturally, when ideas and decisions were needed, class sponsor Sister Ruth was there to make sure all went smoothly. Of course, nothing could stop the sophomore activities which ranged from girls shouting during pep rallies to boys going out for sports. Nevertheless, other obstacles arose and it was in these situations that sophomores helped each other out. So it is no wonder that the class of '83 survived this school year. Rob Roettger and Bill Helmick loaf around during lunch hour. Denise Yoesel awaits eagerly for another English assignment. The first of these was the election of class officers. This was made especially interesting as the new leaders of our nation, the Reagan administration, were elected. Shown directly above, the officers were: from top to bottom: Theresa Knobbe, president; Brian Hoy, treasurer; Greg Goltz, vice-president; and John Watton, secretary. Next, the seniors held a small dinner for the freshmen as a welcoming step. At bottom left, John Dixon is treated to a candlelight dinner by seniors Doug Goltz and David Kopetzky. The freshmen also held a Christmas party (as did the rest of the school). Todd Scheitel and Sister Mary Denise are shown at the left, center, inspecting a pair of giant pretzels. In the top photo, Greg Goltz shows the broken foot which he suffered during a reserve basketball game. The freshmen were very active in sports, showing big promise for future Sacred Heart athletics. 13 Junior High Prepares For High School Gina Bippes Jerry Chab Billy Crowfford Angie Dixon Janet Finck Mike Frederick Annette Keithley Mary Knobbe Greg Liberty Mark Meinzer Kristi Olberding' Amy Pokorny Diane Schlosser Tom Sells Scott Smith 8th Grade Pictured at the left are all of the Junior High students who participated in the various sports this year. Helping the students through the year were their teachers, Sister Joan, Sister Dolores, Mrs. Hank (Marcia) Schwartz, Mrs. Fred (Rita) Weaver, Miss Teresa Lesiak, and Father Jim Benton. The fifteen eighth graders must now look back on their year of glory and anxiously look ahead to envision their upcoming year as lowly underclassmen. Many of them plan to become active in sports, pep club, and musical events, as well as bring their academic talents to a test. The six seventh graders, through with their year as underdogs , have taken note from the eighth graders' example, and are prepared to take their place in junior high activities. The team wrapped up their winning season with a 6-3 record, which is the best record Coach Lonnie Ford has had since he began coaching at Sacred Heart. Under the leadership of team captains Doug Goltz and Jeff Frederick, the Irish showed great effort and determination each time they took to the field. This year, they encountered something new to all of them, as they traveled to Meridian to play an 8-man football game. Although they were defeated in their attempt at this slightly different type of ball, they gained much valuable experience. At the end of this year's season, Steve Hoy was named to the All-conference team as a defensive lineman as a result of his efforts on the squad. The team also produced 18 lettermen, 12 of whom were underclassmen, which will prove to be a great asset in the upcoming years. Pictured at the bottom right is Mark Bentley, making his way carefully down the field towards the end zone, while Dave Knobbe prepares himself to lend a helping hand the minute he's needed. Even though the 1980 Irish volleyball season turned out to be a little disappointing, the girls showed much improvement over the previous years. Each time they took to the court, they showed more determination and effort, which was evident in their 4-9 record, the best record since volleyball began as a regular sport at Sacred Heart. Vicki Rathman was named to the all-conference team at the end of the season, and Joyce Stratton was given honorable mention all-conference honors. The Irish- ettes, at 0-12 at one point in the year, refused to give up as they won two out of their last three games. The underclassmen also gained much needed experience as all 11 girls earned letters. Jayne Stratton, the team's leading scorer, was selected to the first team All-Conference. Steve Hoy was not present for the picture. As spring began to thaw away the cold Nebraskan winter, thirty-one Sacred Heart students began to stretch out and jog for the upcoming track season. The Irish track team spent long weeks running practice relays and sprints, and their hard work was rewarded. Their accomplishments ranged from the girls' 3200 meter relay team-placing second at the Peru Invitational with a time of 10:37 to Jeff Oliver placing first at the Southeast Invitational Track Meet with a time of 55.0 seconds. Even with all the long hours spent practicing and all the disappointments brought about by defeat, the Irish track stars gained a sense of accomplishment and unity throughout the successful season. 22 Starting at lower left and going clockwise: The Irish are in the lead as Don Strecker hands Jeff Oliver the baton for the 1600 meter relay. Pat Olberding demonstrates his calm, collective form while soaring past the 5'10' mark at the Galaxy Meet. The Irish had ten state qualifiers who made the trip to Omaha on May 22-23. In front are Jayne Stratton (qualifying in the 800 meter run and the 3200 meter relay), Amy Slominski (3200 meter relay), Vicki Rathman (discus), and Joyce Stratton and Theresa Knobbe (3200 meter relay). The girls finished with 9 points at the meet. Vicki Rathman placed second in the discus with a school record flip of 117 0', and the 3200 meter relay placed sixth overall. Throughout the year, the girls also set a new relay record with a time of 10:21.6. Jayne's time of 2:28.5 at the district track meet also was a new record. Qualifying for the boys were Don Strecker (3200 meter run, 1600 meter relay), Jeff Oliver (1600 meter relay), Chris Rathman (discus), and Pat Olberding and Doug Goltz (1600 meter relay). Two new records were set during the year in boys' track: the 400 meter relay team of Jeff, Doug, Kevin Smith, and Phil Knobbe bettered the old record with a time of 48.5, and Don Strecker's state-qualifying time in the 3200 meter run, 10:15.0, bettered his own record. Betsy Marx, in the white shorts, shows her graceful style while running the 100 meter low hurdles. Here's where all that hard practice pays off. Don Strecker manages to lead the pack in the 1600 meter run with Jeff Coonce keeping up with the pace in the sixth place position. 23 Goals Achieved in Awards Banquet When a student works hard in academics or athletics he usually aims for a goal. This goal may be passing high school and entering a career after graduation. Yet, another goal can be the recognition of one's achievement in high school. Indeed, many of Sacred Heart's students accomplished this goal in the Sacred Heart Activities Banquet. During the banquet, Don Coupe, Master of Ceremonies, introduced the guest speaker, Glenn Cunningham. Cunningham is a member of the Track and Field Hall of Fame. He told students and parents alike that all things are possible with faith. Also, during the banquet Coach Ford and Coach Uher presented athletic awards to 25 high school boys and 15 high school girls while Sister Hilaria presented 12 academic awards. In the end, students felt proud of acheiving another goal. In the pictures, top right: Guest speaker Glenn Cunningham lets the laughs settle down after telling a joke. In the Galaxy One-Act Play Contest, the Sacred Heart play received an excellent score. In the jungles of the Amazon, an argument forces Candide to knock out Eric with a bag of marshamallows while Paquette panics. With fame in their eyes, the Speech class of Sacred Heart decided to present a classic play to both Sacred Heart students and at the Galaxy One-Act Play Contest. The play was entitled, “What Ever This Is, We're all In It Together. The story is about a naive boy named Candide who finds out, through his adventures, that it takes more than an education to know the world; it takes experience. The cast included Norb Silva as Candide, Rhonda Roettger as Cun- egunde, Rob Roettger as Professor Pangloss, Lisa Keller as Paquette, Mary Taft as Serafina and Todd Scheitel as Eric. In the make-up room, some actors await anxiously for show time, while final make-up touches are being made on other actors of the play. Candide reads aloud to Cunegunde and Paquette the reason why this is the best of all possible worlds. However, little do they know that a war is about to commence in their midst. 27 Musicians and Vocalists Blend in Harmony Directly below are shown the members of the Sacred Heart Chorus. The musical was based on the life of Jesse James, the outlaw, and his notorious gang. Under the leadership of Theresa Lesiak the musical drew great reviews and was billed a success. In the pictures, starting at the upper left and going clockwise; Aunt Zerelda (Jeff Oliver) and Pappy (Pat Olberding) boogie to the music in These Southern States that I love. ; Wicher (Chris Rathman) staggers after a deadly shot by )esse (Doug Goltz); Belle Starr (Kathy Nichols) shows Cole (Jeff Oliver) that she doesn’t Need a Man to Know She's Good. ; Jim Younger (Steve Frocschl), Frank James (Don Strecker) and Bob Younger (David Kopetzky) sing with the rest of the cast in Jesse James Robbed this Train. Homecoming Tops Off Football Season When November 1, All Saints Day, arrived. Sacred Heart was already fired up for the Homecoming game against Nebraska City Lourdes Knights. Enthusiasm for the day built up the days before Homecoming during Spirit Week. On Halloween night, the juniors presented a homecoming play at the pep rally which was followed by the lighting of the bonfire on the practice field. It roared with sparks and smoke displaying the firey Irish determination to win. Finally, this all mounted to an Irish win with a score of 6-0, and the crowning of Doug Goltz and Joyce Stratton as king and queen. Starling from left to right: former Homecoming pair Debbie Nichols and Mike Olberding; Homecoming candidates Vicki Rathman and Phil Knobbe; Homecoming queen Joyce Stratton and king Doug Goltz; and candidates Amy Keithley and Jeff Frederick. During the Irish pep rally, the Homecoming bonfire was lit into a burst of flames and sparks as the Nebraska City Lourdes football dummy burned away. The Irish were unstoppable as they plowed through the Lourdes' defense. At the pep rally, the juniors presented their version of the T.V. series Fantasy Island as a homecoming skit. 30 ) Christmas Formal Heats up the Chill The evening of December 14 started out with the saying of the Apostles' Creed by Doug Goltz, senior class president. One by one, the students went up to say their prayers before the altar as the Living Rosary progressed. At the special mass, the Holy Family was portrayed by Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Goltz and Little Timothy Fischer. After the last prayer, students and parents filed out fo the church and into Tiehen Gym for the Christmas Formal. Way before the Formal date, the juniors of Sacred Heart decorated the gym as pictured bottom left. With this backdrop parents and students danced to the first tunes conducted by disco whiz Keith Marx as seen top left and bottom right. Of course a hot dance needs cooling, so the refreshment department was assigned to the freshmen. On top left, freshmen Greg Goltz, Brian Hoy and Tom Olberding show that not all is work without play. 31 Prom Gives Lasting Memories The Junior-Senior Prom of 1981 was held at the Elks Lodge U963. The night was full of fun and excitement for all. The music was supplied by the band “Extra from Lincoln. The group had a wide variety of costumes, ranging from a tiger suit to a jogging suit. The band was named Extra and they had many extra effects. They created special lighting effects and smoke screens to go along with the songs they played. The meal was prepared in a banquet style by the junior mothers and it consisted of Ham or Beef and corn and potatoes. The salad and strawberry cake were served by the freshmen servers. Kevin Binder of Pawnee City took the pictures for this year's prom. He took many pictures of couples and groups. The memories collected during the night will be remembered long after May 8, 1981. • ms (an Fleskoski and Betsy Mar pose for a picture while they wait for the band to set up. Steve Hoy, Terry Olson, and Mark Bippes are signing books while they wait. The band plays one of their many numbers while the students dance. The band played music from different eras, from the Beatles to the Bee Gees. The students, with their friends and dates, rest during one of the breaks that the band took to hook up different equipment. 32 Class of '81 Enters the Future •••Scholarship Awards Victoria Lynne Rathman Presidential Scholarship to College of Saint Mary One-Year Regents to the University of Nebraska Richardson County Bank Business Scholarship Elk's Most Valuable Student 1st Place, Local Contest 2nd, Eastern District Class Valedictorian Douglas J. Many thanks are also in order to all of those who helped at the sporting and other events in any way; by being linesmen, chaperoning the dances, or just cheering the Irish teams on to victory. There are certain things that must be done regularly to keep a school running successfully and efficiently. Pictured directly above are the school secretaries, who took care of all of the records, typing, and everything else that needed to be done. At the left is Mrs. Dick (Nini) Frederick, and at the right is Mrs. Fred (Rita) Weaver. In the picture at the top right are Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Fiegener, who were responsible for transporting students to and from school each day from the Shubert and Dawson areas. At the top left are the ladies who worked each day to prepare the meals for the students of Sacred Heart. From left they are Mrs. Ed Pokorny, Mrs. lohn May, and Mrs. Frank Berger. Special thanks go to Madeline Keller for her work in the grade school library, and to Rosie Weddle for keepin the school neat and clean. 34 There are just some things that can hardly be parted from. One is the bond between classmates which is present in every Sacred Heart class. Together they experienced the joys, surprises and sorrows of life. The unknown was also explored when each classmate went through the stages of being a freshman, a sophomore, a junior and finally a senior. Only now can we say how it felt to be under pressure during classes or to be free when we danced. Gradually, we got to know what made each of us tick or tock. At the same time, the school's time was set in our minds. It told us when to rise for that Monday morning class, when to starve just before lunch and when to get the butterflies in our stomach right before a test. This whole period of life was taken for granted, at times, and we finally realized it when graduation came up. After the diplomas were handed out, there were no more bells that shrilled with a demand to change classes and there were no more familiar faces that passed down the hall. There seemed to be loneliness. Yet, that sadness is overwhelmed when we consider that we do remember each other and that we got to share our lives. Such a thought makes it easier for the class of '81 to say goodbye with a smile of love.
