In August, a dozen freshmen entered the doors of Sacred Heart High School for the first time. Filled with hope and excitement, they prepared to face the challenges of high school, or mainly just those brought about by being a Freshman. Their sponsor, Sister Mary Denise, supervised as officers were elected (Dan Goltz, President; Steve Coonce, Vice-President; Lisa Keller, Secretary; and Chris Rathman, Treasurer) and plans were made for the upcoming year. Their first task was the furnishing of refreshments for the Christmas Formal. This fine new group of students has proven to be a great asset to Sacred Heart High, as they have shown their abilities in all areas of extracurricular activities. 5 Kathy Aitken Mark Bippes Jennifer Burghart Jeff Coonce Jan Fleskoski SAPHIMiRCS The class of '82 entered their second year of high school with much enthusiasm. Under the leadership of the class officers, (President Steve Hoy, Vice-President Ann Frederick, Secretary Jennifer Burghart, and Treasurer Angie Keithley) and the class sponsor. Sister Ruth Barron, cake raffles were held at the home basketball games to raise money for the anticipated expenses that are always arising during high school. Two new students were welcomed into the class at mid-term. Gary Wendtlandt and Don Hoppe joined the class, rounding out the total to 23 and making this the largest class this year. Unfortunately, there was no picture of Don present for this yearbook. Cake raffles were the sophomores' money-raising project for this year. During the course, the juniors acquired three new students: Bill Coonce, Terry Olson, and Mark Bentley (whose picture is unfortunately not present). All acquired during the year was knowledge and friendship. Both traits were present as the juniors raised money for the Junior-Senior Prom and readied the event. Of course, all wasn't work and no play. The juniors acted in the Homecoming skit, a version of “Oh God, along with setting up the Homecoming bonfire itself. Also, the juniors participated in the annual County Government Day, in which juniors take the roles of judges, sheriffs, county clerks, and other government positions for a day. Finally, with all this commotion, some order was needed, so the class officers (Doug Goltz as president, Norb Silva as vice-president, Vicki Rathman as secretary, and Dave Kopetzky as treasurer) took these responsibilities. Indeed, the junior year was a busy one worth remembering and keeping in one's heart. One of the many ways the juniors raised money to finance the Junior-Senior Prom was to hold slave sales. Above, Steve Froeschl moves about restlessly as freshmen, sophomores, and seniors bid for him. Bill Coonce and Phil Knobbe glug down some pop after a hearty lunch. The pop machines became very popular during the lunch hour; Janet Tauchen and Joyce Stratton work fruitfully at keeping their seams straight in sewing class, a new class taught by Sister Mary Denise this year; and Dennis Kean and Sharon Tauchen sell raffle tickets for the waterbed donated by Mary's Waterbed Shoppe at a home basketball game in the Prichard Auditorium. The sale of these tickets was just one of the many ways the juniors raised money in their goal to finance the Junior-Senior Prom. 9 Top picture. Traditionally, the Sacred Heart seniors decorate the school, and this year was on exception. This was one of the many painted windows. Highlighting the Homecoming festivities was the bonfire, built again by the juniors. The juniors also presented their version ot Oh God as the skit before the bonfire on Homecoming Eve. They won 2nd place in the Galaxy Southern Division, losing to the Mustangs of Southeast after defeating the Cardinals of Humboldt; and 4th place in the overall Galaxy Conference. They were defeated by the girls from Conestoga, in the Northern Division, in this game. Dottie Hill was recognized as All-Conference, and Patti Cowles and Natalie Eickhoff earned Honorable Mention Honors. The girls won their first game in the District tournament, whipping Barneston, but were eliminated from District competition with a loss to Odell. 14 The Irish Girls' basketball team consisted of: front row, Patti Cowles, Debbie Nichols, Dottie Hill, and Kathy Marx. The Irish basketball season of 1979-80 wasn't what some had expected with a surprising 14 wins and 5 losses. And not only was this shown in the records of wins and losses, but also with trophies. In the Galaxy Tournament, the Irish took a well-deserved first place in the Southern Division and a second place for overall at Conestoga. With such an achievement it was no wonder that Irish players Mike Olberding and Doug Goltz were chosen for all-conference. Of course, these accomplishments proved that team dedication and determination was the main Irish motto. So once again the Irish retained the recognition that they are still a challenge in basketball to every team they encounter. 17 The Sacred Heart Irish girls' track team consisted of: front row, left to right: Debbie Nichols, Patti Cowles, Natalie Eickhoff, and Dottie Hill. The relay team was also rated in state, but suffered a disappointing disqualification at the district meet which ended their hopes for a state berth. Members of the team, pictured at the right, with the trophy and their ribbons included Jayne Stratton, Debbie Nichols, Angie Keithley, and Joyce Stratton. This year, those were not the only changes in our budding track stars' careers. The distances of the races were universally changed from the American yard to the metric system. Those who were used to 440 yards or less in a race now had to run a little further, and those who were long-distance runners got to rest sooner. Coaches Ford and Uher guided our teams through these changes once again, with their trusty stopwatches. 1979-80 Activities Banquet All of Sacred Heart's students work and toil for running, shooting and thinking were rewarded on May 4 as the annual Sacred Heart activities banquet was held. During the ceremonies Don Coupe acted as master of ceremonies and the awards, well deserved by the students, were given out by Sister Mary Hilaria for academic awards and coaches Linda Uher and Lonnie Ford for athletics awards. A total of thirty-five students received sport letters. Also the KTNC awards were given to Kirby Oliver for football, Mike Olberding for basketball, Mike Finck and Bob Stratton for track, Debbie Nichols for volleyball, Dottie Hill for basketball, and Natalie Eickhoff for track. Along with this list were a number of academic awards. Tim Kean earned the Bausch and Lomb science award for the highest average in three years of science study. Also, Tim placed second among the boys for the Elk's Most Valuable Students contest and Karen Marx ranked forth among the girls. After all cherished their awards, they were given an after dinner speech by Mary Higgins, Creighton University Women's Athletic Director. The speech concluded excellently and students, with their parents, left content and were proud that they were recognized for their achievements and talents. Starting from top left and going clockwise: Tim Kean receiving one of his many awards from Sister Mary Hilaria; Mike Olberding receiving his athletic award from coach Lonnie Ford; Mary Coupe receiving her Gold Key Award for the Scholastic Magazine state art contest; and Jon McQueen receiving his athletic award from coach Ford. When principal Sister Mary Hilaria presented to the Senior class their Senior play, they took it away with enthusiasm and devotion. The play God's Favorite was presented on a couple of weekends during the school year and character roles were filled way before the first performance. Mike Olberding played the part of the main character Joe Benjamin. The rest of the parts were played through dual roles. Brian Burghart and Bob Stratton shared the part of Sidney Lipton, Sheila Koelzer and Judi Watton the part of Rose Benjamin, Mike Finck and Jon McQueen the part of David, Patti Cowles and Karen Marx the part of Saroch, Dottie Hill and Debbie Nichols the part of Betty Benjamin, Kirby Oliver and Terry Horner the part of the Butles, and Julie Majerus and Natalie Eickhoff the part of the Maid. The play turned out to be very enjoying and successful and it was an achievement the Seniors were proud of. Here you go. Brian Burghart hands Mike Olberding something of extreme value. Oh, dear! Dottie Hill and Karen Marx huddle desparately as the house freezes up. A touching scene between Kirby Oliver and Julie Majurus. 24 Sireen is LINE TIME PLAYERS The pictures on this page are just a few of the scenes captured from the performances of the Sacred Heart Green and White Fine Time Players, a newly conceived group of aspiring young actors and actresses. The group consists of members of the drama class, who, under the direction of Sister Mary Hilaria, produced many enjoyable moments for those who watched their works. The Players, entertained young and old alike as they performed at such events as pep rallies, and Parent Appreciation Night, and traveled to nursing homes to show their wide range of talent. Christmas Formal '79 The Christmas Formal was another great time gone by as the students of Sacred Heart left the Tiehen Gym with pent-up excitement on the night of December 16th, 1979. It all started with the Living Rosary, held in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Students of Sacred Heart contributed their own unique voices in saying the rosary, while members of the chorus, directed by Miss Anne Ourada, blended their voices in harmony in Sacred Heart's annual gift to God. Mr. Mrs. Raymond Finck (parents of Mike Finck, the senior class president), and Jennifer Knobbe, daughter of Mr. Mrs. John Knobbe, portrayed the Holy Family. A picture of them is directly above. The senior boys are shown faintly in the background, in the formation of a cross, which was their contribution to the rosary. The music for the formal was provided by the disc jockey, Len Becker, again this year. Sacred Heart students and their dates boogied to the tunes of the Cars, Foreigner, AC DC, and Peaches Herb, among the flashing of colored strobe lights. Beautiful decorations were provided by the junior class, and the mistletoe was a very popular item. Dottie Hill is pictured at right, dancing to the tunes selected by Mr. Becker. The chaperones for the formal were the parents of the senior class officers: Dr. Mrs. Robert Burghart, Mr. Mrs. Raymond Finck, Mr. Mrs. LeRoy Nichols, and Mr. Mrs. Paul Olberding. A special thanks goes to them. 26 rom ’30 The Junior-Senior Prom of 1980 was a traditional idea, but with many new experiences. It was held at the Falls City Elks Lodge  963, and the music was provided by the band. Badger. This was quite a change from the prom held in 1979, at The Gallery with a disc jockey. Another new feature was having pictures taken of various people by Mr. Harley Ridgeway of Morsman Studios. These pictures could be added to scrapbooks with other prom mementos, for a lasting memory of May 9th, 1980. Pictured on this page, starting from right, and going counter-clockwise: Steve Froeschl and Teresa Schawang boogie happily to the music of Badger; Patti Cowles and Jon McQueen gaze into each other's eyes as their bodies rock to the beat; Lisa Ownes holds a candle to all disco queens; Miss Linda Uher and Dennis Kean get into the jive; and Mary Taft and David Kopetzky smile happily as Mr. Rod- geway prepares to take their picture. 27 The seniors, accompained by Tim Kean, sing a special song to the student body on their last day of school at the traditional ceremony in which they receive their caps and gowns. Those people are our bus drivers, who put up with us even on the longest of trips; the ladies who work in the lunchroom day after day to prepare nutricious meals to keep us going and all of the parents and friends of Sacred Heart High School for giving their support in making the year a great success. Yearbook staff: Kathy Aitken, Ron Hoffmann, Amy Kunce, Vicki Rathman, and Norberto Silva |r. 34 A day is born! It commences with a mellow rose color smudged across the eastern sky. Gradually, a ball of blinding light rises, promising us that some of the consistency of life will be preserved to help us live on this planet. Yet, those events which are the same every day of our lives have a unique color, a rare softness. Nothing and no one is identical. School days have their sameness. The concrete gray color of the school lockers and the pencil-lead aroma present in every room are as the trees and the smell of ferns are to a forest. Within this mixture of motion and inertness are personalities. A whole universe of them. Each student is a single sun, rising each day meeting one another with happy greetings, nervous replies or just friendly chats. Each one of them is respected and they in turn do the same unto others. Each one is given a chance to develop a future which can grow out like a tree spreading its branches of success across the unknown crystal-blue sky. And of course, from the very beginning to the ultimate end of the high school years, each one develops inside. Maturity, sacrifice, love. These are just a taste of the emotions experienced and found in each person. For each person is different and so is every graduating class. The class of 1980 was an unmatched class. From their trial and errors, prizes and recognition, agreement and distaste, we experienced more life. We look back at their time and from it we can expect or even predict what can happen to other future classes. Observing this, though, we instinctively pause. There was no class like the class of 1980 and there will probably never be one whose memories are so persistent in the ones they touched. In pausing, we bid farewell . . . 35 mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCEUNE. MIHNOt HI. UJA. mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCELINK MISSOURI. U S A
