SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL Falls City, Nebraska Volume li 2 STEVE KOPETZKY 1956-1974 THE HOMECOMING SKIT of 1973, “Dragnet,” starred Steve Kopetzky, being questioned here by Pat Marx and Mark Huber. In Memoriam We dedicate the planning and preparation of this annual in memory of Steve Kopetzky, our friend and classmate who died on October 14, 1974. Steve was always a leader in the class of '75. The entire school took pride in his many personal victories; he won the Nebraska American Legion Oratorical Contest in both 1973 and 1974, and was a state finalist in the 1973 Voice of Democracy contest. He was honored twice with invi- tations to the American Academy of Achievement. He won the communi- ty’s respect as an outstanding Boy Scout and a dedicated lifeguard. He served our school as co-editor of The Spotlight and junior class pres- ident. He was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams, the band, swing choir, and church guitar choir. At a time when the school was looking forward to the 1975 homecoming festivities, and as the seniors began yearbook preparation, Steve was called away from us. Injured in a football game at Nemaha Valley High School on October 11, he died at a Lincoln hospital on the following Monday. During the long weekend, Falls City united in prayer and hope. We found comfort in Steve's prophetic last words to Coach Jenkins: “O.K., Coach, ...I'm ready to go.'' As we honored Steve with the biggest funeral in Falls City’s history, we remembered the Bible verse that suited Steve so well: “The virtu- ous man, though he die before his time, will find rest. He has sought to please God, so God has loved him.” Steve will be remembered always by his friends as an example of faith and courage. His death left his classmates with a new respect for both life and death. We will always be united by the shared experience of his death, although miles and years may separate us. A DEDICATED ATHLETE, Steve emphasized teamwork as an element of success in football and all sports. STEVE TOOK PRIDE in these trophies which represent three years of successful speech competition. STEVE, AS PRESIDENT of his junior class, spent hours planning and de- corating for the prom. STEVE BECAME INVOLVED in the planning stages of this annual at a workshop held on October 7, just four days before his fatal accident. THE TYPING CLASS prepares for another busy day. IN ADVANCED P.E., Mark Fleskoski and Joe Bangert look on as Pat Marx heaves the ball. Class His Fall 1971, found 28 freshmen installed as new citizens of Sacred Heart School. Initiated on the evening of our first day in high school, the girls proved themselves fashionable by wearing diapers, mismatched shoes, braids and, of course, an “I Love the Seniors sign. The boys looked stylish in similar dress but with pigtails and red lipstick. The high points of the party were walking blindfold through a box of broken glass (which felt suspiciously like corn flakes) and jumping six feet from a board held by senior boys, then hitting the floor eight inches later! Our freshmen officers were Greg Smith, president; Mark Huber, vice-president; Connie Taft, secretary; and Susan Lantzy, treasurer. They led us through such experiences as a bake sale at Gamble’s and manning the punch bowl at the Christmas formal. Mike Bird decided his favorite teacher was Miss Los- kill when she broke a world record by keeping him after school for an hour and a half. The speech class all went to conference speech meets through the year, but Steve Kopetzky showed fecial talent by winning the District American Legion Oratori- cal Contest. Steve also won the Elk’s Club Speech Con- test, with Jerry Koopman taking third place. Our fresh- man year will long be remembered as the year Mental Olympics got its start. It was also the year many of us made our acting, singing, or dancing debuts in a rendi- tion of Noah's Ark for the incoming freshmen. On the first day of our sophomore year we met two new classmates, Nancy McQueen and our first exchange stu- dent, Martin Rangel, from Venezuela. He lived with the Kopetzky’s. Diane Mcllvain moved away which left us with 29 members. The officers were Susan Lantzy, president; Pat Marx, vice-president; Mark Huber, secretary; and Joe Bangert-treasurer. The big project of that year was popping popcorn for basketball games. The only thing is that Anita, Frances, Connie and Marcia ate up all of the profits. Some of the girls still haven’t recovered from biology class. That year we dissected frogs and cows eyes. Remember, Claire, when one of the eyeballs chased you away from the table? Two salesman and a Navy recruiter had to look twice when they visited school on Clash Day. A typical outfit was a bright polka-dotted shirt, with plaid pants, a striped tie, and green tennis shoes. For the second time, Steve won the District American Legion Oratorical Contest and then went to win at State. He won a trip to the Regional Contest held in Ca )er, Wyoming. Another victory for Steve was the State Voice of Democracy Contest. We had a farewell party for Martin, for we knew he would be returning to Venezuela during the summer. We left our sophomore year looking forward to being upper- classmen. The beginning of our junior year seemed quite because Mike Hunzeker had been ZAPPed down to F.C.HJS. The officers were Steve Kopetzky, president; Greg Smith, vice-president; Chris Cowan, secretary; and Allan Bau- man, treasurer. They led us in projects like picking up com. Remember, Anita, how much fun the boys had tying you up in that gunny sack?!! Steve was almost un- animously impeached by the girls when he set back the only wristwatch in the field. Trusting his honest face, we were all LATE for our afternoon appointments. Our class was left in charge of the homecoming skit. Pat Marx, Hank Prater, Mark Huber, and Steve Kope- tzky as the FBI (Football Investigation) arrested the masked creature, Coach, in a version of Dragnet writ- ten by Jerry Koopman. Two members of our class, Mark Huber and Keith Marx, moved away shortly alter homecoming. In January we wel- comed another exchange student, Rachel Russo, from Bra- zil. She lived with the McQueen’s. The Christmas formal proved to be full of dancing. The only trouble was that the band didn’t show up because of snow... so we danced our hearts to a tape player provided by Jerry Hill! During our junior year the basketball team made it to the state tournament, for the first time in 27 years. We went on to take second place at state. We will never for- tory 75 get this experience and feeling. The prom was the biggest event for us. We spent many hours planning and decorating. Most of this credit goes to Steve. The theme this year was “Color My World. The entrance was a black tunnel with fluorescent colors. Black lights added the finishing touches. This credit goes to Joe Gilbert, Pat Marx, Greg Smith, Mike Bird, Joe Bangert, and Jerry Koopman. The ceiling was of strings and balloons for which Greg was a “BIG help. The sides were walls made of crepe paper. Remember, Chris, how we had to keep redoing the twists! After the prom, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was featured at the Rivoli. After a long wait, our class rings arrived on the first of May. We were all proud of our rings. After a few weeks you noticed a few juniors minus their rings. Steve again won the District American Legion Oratorical contest, and was again State Champion in that contest. Steve placed a very close second in the Regional Contest held in Arvada, Colorado. Steve also attended a “Banquet of the Golden Plate for high school achievers. They met with national leaders at Salt Lake City, Utah. At the end of our junior year, the boys were given the All Sports Award from the Omaha World Herald. When the seniors left that year we knew that in a few short months we would be the seniors. And here we are: 25 of us crossed the door as Seniors. The officers for us this year are Kathy Schawang, pre- sident; Greg Smith, vice-president; Susan Lantzy, secre- tary; and Anita Santo, treasurer. When we came back we had a “Cotton Candy King in our class. Mike Bird won this title during the summer for consuming 57 sticks of cotton candy. Steve Kopetzky, starting flanker and defensive back for the SH football team was fatally injured late in a football game at Cook with Nemaha Valley. The injury came with 1 minute and 56 seconds to go in the game. Steve tackled a Nemaha Valley man to keep them from scoring. The offensive man limped off the field but Steve lay motionless. In a few seconds it was apparent Steve was hurt seriously. The game was called. When the ambu- lance finally arrived, Steve was taken to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Lincoln. That weekend dragged for everyone in Falls City. We were all stunned and not quite sure what was happening. On Saturday, October 12, we held a rosary for Steve at 2:00. Steve was in critical condition. On Sunday things hadn't improved; we were all afraid to face the fact that we were losing Steve. That Monday, school was full of prayer between each class. Everyone had teary eyes. In homeroom, we seniors, for the first time, really felt close. We all realized how important Steve was to us and what he stood for. That same day, Steve left us. With homecoming in five days, none of us knew if we could go on, but we knew we had to. Steve would have wanted us to. The funeral was held on Thursday, the largest in Falls City's history. The Pep Club wore their outfits; re- presentatives from every school and personal friends at- tended. There were nine priest to say his Mass. The high school sang out the songs Steve loved best. We went to the cemetary to see Steve for the last time. Seven months have passed, yet not one of us will ever forget Steve as a classmate and friend. We will always remember how it felt to lose him and what it meant to us as a class. He will long be remembered by us and our school. We decorated for homecoming that night, October 17. The rooms were main attractions. Coach's room was the best of all with the “Reah sign and the desk in a circle with a sign reading “We Don't Mess Around . Homecoming was held October 20. The game was played with Pawnee City and the Irish were victorious. Before the game started, a short silence of prayer was held in memory of Steve. At the half time activities, Karen Hutfles was crowned queen and Hank Prater, king. The dance was held in the gym. With homecoming over, we got to work on the senior play which was “Up the Down Staircase. Susan Lantzy had the lead as Sylvia. She played a typical teacher with a classroom of students which resembled a few around here. Joe Gilbert played the mean principal. Hank Prater got the best laughs and Anita Santo was voted as having the funniest costume. Mrs. Edwards, our director, was given a gift certificate and Susan was given a basket of red apples. It was our job to decorate the Christmas tree for the Christmas formal. The formal was held on December 17 and we danced to the music of Flight. The senior year brought 36 Mad Mondays, 36 Torrent Tuesdays, 36 Wild Wednesdays, 36 Threatening Thursdays, and 36 Freak-Out Fridays. And we've all survived! On May 9th the seniors ventured to WORLDS OF FUN. We left school at 7:00 p.m. and arrived at 9:30. On the way down Joe Gilbert had fun entertaining the cars following close behind us; he was acting as his usual self! The girls stayed together...with the exception of Nancy! Karen and Anita had the most fun on the bumper cars. They broke the record of riding the most times in a row: 13 times. The “Fat Man got drenched on the Viking Voyager and also had quite a spin on the Finish Finn. Another companion, after getting off, said, “Has this thing stopped yet? But most of all, the boys en- joyed girl watching. We watched “Brownville Station in concert. When the drummer broke his drum stick he threw them to the audience. Pat and Jerry were lucky and each caught one. The WORLDS OF FUN closed at 5:00 a.m. We were aU bushed and ready to go home. Sleeping on the journey home was impossible. We reached our destination at 7:30, many of us ready for work at 8:00. We have the honor this year of graduating in the new church. This is something our class has waited for. A bell tower has been erected and dedicated to Steve. As the graduating seniors venture out to a new world, let's always remember our high school years we had together at Sacred Heart. 33 Graduation Day KATHY SCHAWANG RECEIVES the valedictorian award from Bishop Flavin while the superintendent of the diocesen schools, Father Daw- son, looks on.
