Football practice began two weeks before school started, and out of 35 men, Coach Jenkins formed a team that won 10 games, including eight shutouts, and only gave up 10 points. The team captured the South East Border Conference title, the Galaxy Conference title, and were rated No. 1 in Class D by both the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Star. In basketball, the team made it to the regional playoffs against Yutan, where the Irish lost by one slim point. I he academic year was a great success also, as demonstrated by the number of trophies accumulated by students in the past nine months. Most of these were won by sophomore Steve Kopetzky in speech contests. Steve hit his peak when he claimed first place in the State American Legion Oratorical contest. A math team consisting of Dan Kean, Tom McGuire, Janis Lantzy, Kevin McGinnis, and Mike Bird, brought home a First place trophy from Creighton. Other speech awards were won by Greg Kopetzky, Steve Kottich and Maureen Hoffmann. Maureen also won S250 in an essay contest sponsored by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Eight students were awarded scholarships this year. They were: Dan Kean. Kevin McGinnis, Janis Lantzy, Tom McGuire, Steve Banks, Carla Koopman, Donna Hunzeker, and Mike Hall. In the second year of the Mental Olympics, the Hollow Heads II were the victorious team, scoring 645 points. Second place went to the “Masterminds”, cap- tained by Carla Koopman. Members of the victorious Hollow Heads II' include Captain Herb Pokorny, Dan Knobbe, John Santo. Kathy Hoy, Mike Bird, and Jane Metzner. At the beginning of the school year, the freshmen were guests at an initiation party given in their honor. The freshmen went through many harrowing experiences while blindfolded, and then the freshman boys went through the countryside in the back of Bob Taft’s truck. The freshmen showed their strong school spirit by outselling the other three classes in the Spotlight sub- scription drive, and in raising money at the church bazaar. Three of the freshman boys went to the S.E.B. speech contest at Humboldt. They were Tom Harmon, Phil Froeschl, and Matt Froeschl. In sports. Matt Froeschl was the only freshman to earn a letter. He did this in the pole vault when he won a third place. The sophomores enjoyed a new experience when they welcomed Martin Rangel, a Venezuelan student. Martin stayed the second semester at the home of Steve and Greg Kopetzky. On his birthday Martin was presented a letterman’s jacket and he became a full-fleged Irishman. To commemorate the No. 1 rating in football, the sophomores ordered bumper stickers proclaiming the Irish success, and sold these to Irish supporters. Pat Marx was the only sophomore to qualify for the state track meet. Pat competed in the 880-yard run. Three of the B-team cheerleaders this year came from the sophomore class. They were Susan Lantzy, Chris Cowan, and Karen Hutfles. The sophomores began earning money for the junior-senior prom next year by holding three bake sales, one garage sale, selling candy in school and by selling the bumper stickers. The junior class activities began with preparing a skit for the homecoming bonfire. The skit involved a football game between the Irish “settlers” and some “In- dians” on the warpath from Pawnee City. “Dancing in the Moonlight was the theme for the junior-senior prom held at Prichard Auditorium, May 12. The setting was a park scene with a trickling fountain in the center of the floor. White furniture with Roman columns enclosed the sitting area. For the seniors it was a year of longing for May 17. 38 Before Starting Down The Other Side The first major project of the class was putting on the senior class paly, an astrological comedy, “You Were Born on a Rotten Day”, about a young physics teacher and his attempts to discredit astrology. Marty Froeschl had the dual lead as the physics teacher and as Ptolemy, (he astrologer. All of the seniors had a part with most of them playing students in a rowdy classroom scene. For the Christmas formal, the seniors in the past have provided a live tree and decorated it. This year, due to fire regulations, the seniors couldn’t have a live tree in the gym, so they purchased five artificial trees and lights to decorate them. The trees were later used for Christ- mas Masses and then donated to the school for later use. In March, Mike Hall won the lead in the spring musical “The Miser”, a classic farce with contemporary music and dance. On May 20, the Baccalaureate Mass was offered at St. Mary’s Church, Dawson. Then on May 22, com- mencement exercises were held at Prichard Auditorium. The seniors, in cap and gown, processed in, followed by the faculty. The chorus sang two songs, “Veni, Creator Spiritus”, and “1 Thank You, God.” The diplomas were awarded by Bishop Glennon P. Flavin. The graduation address was given by Rev. Gerard Senecal, O.S.B., presi- dent of the Benedictine Colleges. The recessional, “Go Forth”, was played by the band. Other events of the year include meeting four new teachers, Father Dan Pohl. Miss Julie Payan, Sister Mary Emile, and Sister Barbara. Physics classes went to independent progress this year, joining math as the only independent study courses. The high school boys worked at the Fish Fry this year and helped earn over $1(XX) for the athletic fund. The second annual Father-Son Basketball game was held, with the sons winning the contest by a score of 45- 43. The sons were hindered a bit by being required to wear overshoes for the match. Early in the year Herman Niemeyer, verteran custo- dian, retired after 28 years of service to the parish and school. Father Ray Roh and Father Paul Witt conducted an all-day retreat on April 30. The theme of the retreat was “Pass It On”, a song sung many times by the students and faculty. On Sunday, May 6, the 1973 Activities Banquet was held. Music, speech and math awards were presented, and Coach Jenkins announced the sports awards. Randy York, sports editor for the Lincoln Journal and Star, was the guest speaker. The traditional May crowning ceremony was held May 21, to honor the Virgin Mary and the mothers of the graduates. This year, since the grotto had been removed to make room for the new church, the ceremony was held at the east entrance of the school. The statue of the Virgin Mary was crowned by Janet Malicke. In closing, here’s a quote that might come in handy in a tight situatioj, and one to be remembered by the ad- vanced P.E. class. “I’ll take you all on—one at a time.” Steve Banks 39 Appleoff Appliance Mutt -Jell Armbruster Motor Co.
