You see, iT was during ThoT year on Sep- Tember Il ThaT we, The Class oT '49, were inTroduced To our Alma MaTer, Sacred HearT High School. EveryThing was quiTe new To us, buT aTTer we had Taken oTT our iniTia- Tion garb, we became acquainTed wiTh The halls of The I-learT and Those who roamed wiThin. On OcTober I7 we began our TirsT high school reTreaT, IT was conducTed by Rev. Thomas F. Coffee, S.J. This, in- deed, helped us To make our Freshman year successTul. BaskeTball games, The school play, Ever Since Even! a Trip To The Paper Mill playhouse, a Radio BroadcasT por- Traying The meeTing aT SoinT BenedicT and SainT Scholas- Ticat The Columbia ScholasTic Press ConvenTion in New York, and monThly visiTs To The Terrace Room To hear and inTerview Tamous bandleaders were some aT The highlighTs oT our Freshman year. WISE FOOLS Our second year oT high school broughT us back To The 'T'learT' wiTh our heads high. We were sophomores now, you know: or shall we say wise Toolsni or shall we say Tools lT was greaT To see The Freshies suTTer as we had The year beTore. lmmediaTely we goT down To business, elecTed our class oTTicers and made good resoluTions Tor The new school year. Our annual ReTreaT opened under The direcTion aT Rev. Michael A. Clark, S.J. These days aT recollecTion helped us To check on The pasT and prepare Tor The TuTure. We highlighTed our second year aT Sacred l'learT by puTTing on a ChrisTrnas play, The PloT To OverThrow ChrisTmas.l' IT was given in The Torm oT a radio broadcasT. Besides Taking parT in exTra-curricular acTiviTies, we made a pracTical and sincere endeavor To prepare Tor The nexT Two mosT imporTanT years aT high school. BeTore we realized iT, Class NighT pracTice was under way and we were on The lasT lap oT our iourney Through The second year. We were almosT ready To Take The nexT sTep Toward The Top, finding ourselves Upper-Clossmen. UPPERCLASSMEN WhaT we had looked Torward To Tor Two years had Tinally become a realiTy. We Tound ourselves Juniors. This was one oT The mosT pleasanT years aT The I-leorT. New acTiviTies were inTroduced-ArT, Sewing and The Glee Club. Rev. Joseph WalTers, S.J., conducTed our reTreaT, which began on OcTober 8. We were made To realize The seriousness oT making The righT choice oT a sTaTe in liT'e. The laTTer parT oT November our school play. We Shook The Family Tree , was sToged, The Juniors ployed maior parTs in The producTion. In January we Took over

The ballroom aT The WinTield ScoTT l-loTel was The scene aT The annual Junior-Senior BanqueT. The room was decoraTed in keeping wiTh The season and The ever- presenT April Showers. Frank Harrison made an excellenT ToasT- masTer. EnTerTainmenT was provided by The Juniors and dancing was enioyed. So ended our Junior year aT our Alma MaTer. lnci- denTally, The Academic and Commercial classes were To- geTher This year. IT was nice To work and plan TogeTher. All Thanks To SisTer CelesTine, our home roam Teacher, who was always so paTienT and helpTul in making our Junior year a success. THE LAST STEP Upon reTurning To school This year, we were filled WiTl1 a sense oT pride. We had now reached The Top and were given The exalTed name-Senior. This, our lasT year, was one oT dances, yearbooks, proms-yes, and sTudies. A new subiecT was added To The curriculum-Spanish: La proTesora being SisTer Mary MaT- Thew. Our lasT reTreaT, which was conducTed by Rev. Wal- Ter Reilly, S.J., The second week in OcTober, was mosT inspiring. Three days were spenT speaking To God and lis- Tening Tor l-lis message. For The main purpose aT raising Tunds Tor our Year Book, we, Seniors, sponsored a noonday picnic on Novem- ber 23. l'ToTdogs, soda and candy were on sale. ATTer lunch The sTudenTs spenT The remaining Time dancing or around The ping pong Table. The annual ChrisTmas Program was presenTed in The audiTorium on December 2I, A NaTiviTy play, The Promised one , was given by The Seniors under The direcTion oT Miss Marian Rocky. Our Senior Prom was held SaTurday, January 8, in The Grammar School AudiTorium. Amid The gay winTer decora- Tions and soTT lighTs, we danced To The music aT Eddie Gee and his OrchesTra. This is a nighT ThaT will linger in The hearTs oT The Seniors Tor many days To come. This lasT year passed quiTe smooThly, considering all The exTra acTiviTies ThaT piled up. SisTer Juliana, our home room Teacher, and SisTer Joan, our principal, deserve all aT our praise and Thanks Tor helping us geT Through This hecTic year successTully. Our happy years aT our Alma MaTer have came To a close-and all Too soon. Those years will always be pre- cious memories To us, The Class aT '49.
