Sam Sam: game! To the great pioneer and foundress, who, in spite of count- less hardships and sacrifices, is the sole survivor of 50 years of unselfish devotion to those about herg as well as to the undaunted spirit of the heroic co-founders and the un- relenting courage of the laborers of the subsequent years, we, the class of '55, gratefully dedicate this yearbook. We hail Sacred Heart Schools as standing symbols and memorials of their unwavering courage and true devotion. 10

Sr. Aline de St. Laurent, Superior, Sr. St. Edgar and Sr. Fernand du Sacre Coeur were the teachers, aided by Sr. St. Gerard who assumed other duties as well. The Sisters found it necessary to request services of two lay teachers, Miss Plouffe and Mrs. Labounty, to help in the teaching of English. By this time, other valiant souls had come to help in the good work. Among them were Bonne Mere Alexandrine, Sr. Elie du Carmel and many others. ln 1909, the Sisters decided to take in girl boarders. The first year, however, they num- bered very few. The living quarters were, by this time getting too small for the number of pupils, and the Sisters were faced with the new problem of finding a larger locale. Finally, through arrangements with Father Clermont, the Pastor, they were able to buy the parish hall which was situated where the convent is actually. Since it consisted of only a very large room, partitions had to be made and asecond story added. The renovations of the hall completed, the Sisters were able to occupy the new school and convent, on Dec. 18, 1910. lt was only five years since they had first arrived and already much had been accomplished. In 1914, the first eighth grade graduation took place. In the fall of the same year, a Com- mercial Course was started under the direction of Sr. Marie de Boh Secours. ln 1919, new classrooms, dormitory, chapel were added to the original building. The years that followed were doubtlessly spent in careful planning for a high school that might be opened under the name of Sacred Heart High School. This was finally accomplished in Sept. of 1940, when the first students attended classes in the small rooms allotted them. Everyone knows that to achieve great things, one must start at the beginning and slowly work upward. That is what Sr. Mary of the Assumption and her small staff of teachers did. ln June, 1944, the first class of students graduated from the newly instituted high school. The number of students continued to increase and the rooms did not become larger, so the Sisters decided to add two new classrooms. This was completed in the summer of 1947. It became obvious that apermanent building would someday be needed to accommodate the ever increasing number of students registering at Sacred Heart. Plans were made and many activities were started to raise money. As the site for the new school was to be the pine grove, this ground had to be leveled. The Sisters, especially, Sr. Isabella, Superior, through their perseverance, sacrifices and primarily because of their constant, unfailing devotion and zealous faith in the Sacred Heart finally saw their project finished. Not only did they build a new schoolbut one that Sacred Heart friends and students could boast about and be proud of as one of the best in the state.
