We Want you, as you peruse this book now or later, to remember the where, the What, the how, and the why of life at Sacred Heart. We have tried to show you how our common goal, personal holiness lor personal sanctification as our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII, so aptly declared it in his Iubilee-year message to the Catholic Worldl, is a unifying force in our lives-how it affects even our ordinary actions and makes us do, not the unusual but the usual-the ordinary-in an UNUSUAL way. May we keep our gaze ever fixed on this our common end as we go on our pilgrimage toward God the Father and an Eternity oi delight, l r I F E l w f i I l I i IHI 1950 H1109 QSJBINLQG WX ff KERS ES :N Published by THE SENIORS SACRED HEART IIIGII SCHOOL Yonkers 0 New York .gf id frufy meef and iudf . . fLaf we dkoufcl prairie, if dfedd, an proc aim Zee . . Preface, Feasts of the B. V. M. Next to God, the one person who has the deepest interest in our pilgrimage here on earth is Mary, God's Mother and ours. So concerned is she about us that she has even made trips to our earth to remind us of our importance to her and her Son. At Fatima she gave us her Rosary- the key that will open for us the door to personal sanctitication-the Way that Will give to God honor and glory and Will insure tor us eternal hap- piness. To this interested. and devoted Mother, then, under the title of Our Lady of Fatima, We dedicate this little book and pray that, as she is one Mother to us all, We may be all for One, Who is her Son and our God. of Who's Who in the Classes we cggkfa in fAe :sang o Our Journey The Pilots and Guides ti as well as the Fun and the Frolic and in the Extracurricular Activities jhrougk fami ia: The Monastery Church . . . the hub of the wheel of our life as it revolves . . . ,f 2-Q 'Z APOL4 ww! lmunfd and rumbles, sometimes quietly, sometimes noisily over the four quarters of Yonkers that can be seen from this vantage point . . . wks X XX or to the portals of S.H.H.S., our Alma Mater, where We are always at home only to come back again and again to the familiar doorstep of the brown-robed Cap- uchin Friars who give us guidance and encouragement . . . Sacred Heart High School had very modest beginnings. It opened in l923 in the Monastery Hall and occupied two rooms- one on either side of the stage, The business course was the only course offered to the fifty boys and girls who made up the first class. In 1924 the school emerged from its cata- comb life to move into the light of day. It entered the building familiarly known as the Seraphicate and took up its permanent abode becoming known as Sacred Heart High School. The students at Sacred Heart, now as in the past, are drawn from all parts of Yon- kers, the Bronx, and even from 'New York City. The buses, the trolley lines, the sub- Ways serve them and carry them to and from the school and its familiar haunts. All classes are held in the one building, but the Monastery Hall has been a silent witness to their sports, plays, parties, and dances throughout the years, the grade- school playground is their outdoor gym field, Lennon Park, their lunch-hour haunt, Tib- betts Field, their race track, Trevor Park, their ball park, the Monastery Church, their anchorhold. Every class from l923 to 1950 has held these points as possessions, and each year from September until Iune, they feature in the pattern of their lives. -:NP -s-A. A s..f NW . 1' Wifi. ,Y we 0t6 GHC! We assure you of our co-operation and sincerely hope that we can accomplish as much for you as you have done for us, We pray that God may look favorably upon all your enter- prises undertaken for His honor and glory. 'Father Ivan A true Christopher whose life was a living testimony to the Gospel he preached! VARSITY BASKETBALL e give a generouin A we The Irish cagers ended the season with a good record against their opponents. Under the direction of Coach McNamee, the team defeated some of the outstanding teams in the city-but it surrendered to some of the others. The Saunders Tech game was a thriller all the Way-Sacred Heart froze the ball during the last two minutes of the game to Win by three points. The second game played with New York School for the Deaf was the closest all season With the Irish winning by one point. High scoring records were made by Ioe McCrudden and Tom McPhillips, but every player on the team brought in his share of points. A tense audience watches these impatient hands fight ior the ball. When the high scoring begins the tense- ness disappears. A word to the wise from Coach McNamee makes for a good basketball season. In the fight until the whistle blows!
