0J IS 1967 TJofume 23 cSacrecf J7fear Jfig i cScAoof Jffuens er, 3 exas Twenty-five years ago the first CORDIS was published. Its ideals as set forth in 1942 are very appropriate for our school: Since our yearbook comes directly out of the heart of our school; Since it pulses with the life of our school; Since it emanates the spirit of our school; Since it diffuses the sweet odor of true Catholic education; Since it is molded upon the Sacred Heart of Christ; Since our school and our church are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we have named our annual CORDIS. Cordis is the Latin word meaning of the heart. We, the senior class of '67„ dedicate our yearbook to the. Spirit of (Sacreef Jfeari Brought from Europe! The spirit of our school was first conceived by the early settlers of our community who not only wanted to teach their children how to make a living — but rather how to live. These unsung heroes who rest in God's Acre ask only that we appreciate and revere the Spirit of Sacred Heart. And the Spirit was born! Aiding its delivery were the dedicated Benedictine Priests and Sisters. Without their tender and loving care the Spirit would have died at birth. And the Spirit grows! It is humanly impossible to list the names of all the people who have nourished and kept alive the Spirit of Sacred Heart. Our grandparents, parents, pastors, each and every person who has ever taught at Sacred Heart, and those persons who have given moral and financial support to our school — to these we owe a debt of gratitude. To our parents, teachers, relatives, and friends we say. Thank you. To our ancestors and recently departed teachers and benefactors — we are grateful for your molding our Christian character. Truly, we stand on the shoulders of giants! Just what is this School Spirit of Sacred Heart? Is it tangible? School Spirit is the heart-beat of our school! Its absence brings a halt to the life functions of the school organism. School Spirit is both athletic and academic. It belongs not to sophomores or juniors; freshmen or seniors — it is the life blood of the entire school. School Spirit is a multicolored flag blowing briskly in the breeze. School Spirit is red and white; it is loyalty; it is fun. It is personified in cheers at a pep rally; it is a project well done, and it is the pride of winning a trophy. The Spirit of Sacred Heart is constantly surging, throbbing, growing, and it will continue to grow as the horizons of the faculty and the students broaden and deepen. The Spirit of Sacred Heart is alive and living; it will never die! 3 DEDICATION____ FACULTY....... SENIORS....... JUNIORS....... SOPHOMORES. . . FRESHMEN...... CURRICULUM____ FAVORITES..... '■ c share the continuing task of perpetuating these ideals and trans-lating them into reality. It is not my job alone, nor yours alone. It is ours together. I want you to know that there is no finer contribution you can make for your country than to continue your adventure in education. In this era of growing complexity and advancing technology, our country can remain strong and prosperous only when each young American acquires all the education he can possibly absorb. Diane Hess J- D- Luttmer '69 Class Treasurer Debbie Fette ond Jonicc Grewing are building a better world in which to live. The Spirit of Sacred Heart is a very contagious disease this year. Although everyone has been vaccinated, we cannot help but get it for the biggest carrier seems to be our principal. Sister Roberta. Through her we are daily exposed to it. The bug was first picked up by the senior class with the beginning of football. We thought we had developed an immunity against it, but their affinity was too much. Everyone was vaccinated again, but the juniors, being too weak to resist it, re-infected us. By the second week of school the sophomores had it, too. By the third week it was not only a disease, but an epidemic. We washed, we scrubbed, we held bake sales; we were proud of our school. We yelled, we screamed; we were proud of our team. We followed them all the way to Fredericksburg. There we found a little too much for us, but still, even then, that virus existed. Returning home, we held our heads high and went right on to the next challenge knowing full well that the Spirit of Sacred Heart would continue to reign as the monarch of our school. Kaye Klement 69 Janice Grewing Glenn Schoech Sacred Heart Spirit, wise and brave, is like a growing tree — reaching for greater height. Kenneth Stoffels '69 Melvin Bayer James Dangelmayr Joan Fetsch Virginia Fleitman The School Spirit of Sacred Heart is more than something you can see — but it is something you have to feel. The attitude shown by each and every student is positive and this positive attitude is making Sacred Heart a place of scholastic action. There is much happiness and gratitude in the hearts of everyone. Happiness because Sacred Heart is helping us to know ourselves better, and gratitude to everyone who affects our achievement in a way that makes it possible for us to excel as a school united for one purpose; that purpose being to realize and to accept our place in society. We all knew this might be true so we went with the determination to win, and our spirit was high. The game turned out for the worse, but our spirit against theirs would have won first prize. Winning is not always the important thing; it's the way you play and the spirit with which you play. The Spirit this year at Sacred Heart has been the best ever! Exhibit of students' work in art class. The Spirit of Sacred Heart is outstanding. It is a means of self-expression and a means of showing others our love and loyalty to our alma mater. The Spirit of 67 cannot be explained verbally; it can only be demonstrated in our own unique way. Undo Zimmerer 67 Sacred Heart is a relatively small school — in size that is. Therefore, much attention is given to the individual student. The classes, too, are conducted with this in mind. Each student has the freedom to express his ideas a make his suggestions as to how the classes should be taught. This same freedom entails a great responsibility — the responsibility to participate and to give of one's self. Since each student has the opportunity to express himself, his opinion is respected. We realize that we are privileged to have this air of freedom in our classes. 56 Sacred Heart s School Spirit is like a raging flood which takes everything in its path and turns it in its favor. _ .,o Sister Theresina, o dedicated teacher who has taught ot SHH for many years, discusses a physics experiment with students Janie Knouf, Mary Hesse, and Dionne Gehrig. We should instill in people by our example as active citizens, the “caring'' attitude. This alone will tell the outcome of the desired product, success or failure. Setting this good example will demand fortitude and courage. Pericles had this to say about courage and democracy: “Make up your minds that happiness depends on being free, and freedom depends on being courageous. Pericles lived centuries ago but he seems to have hit upon the right recipe for happiness which for him centered around democracy. This is what democracy means to me; and inherited opportunity to better the world. Janie Knauf 67 Seniors attend $MU Journalism Workshop in Dollos. Every food used in the Jewish passover meal was blessed before it was eaten — the bread and wine which are to be consecrated are blessed by the celebrant during the Offertory of the Mass. The washing of hands during the paschal meal symbolized the interior cleansing necessary for those partaking in the ritual — just as does the celebrant's act of washing his hands during the Offertory of the Mass. Unleavened bread was prescribed for the eight days of the passover, to commemorate the first passover; for in the flight from Egypt, there had been no time to make leavened bread. The bread which Our Lord used when He instituted the Eucharist was unleavened — a custom which has carried over into the Latin rite. Student Council is the mainstream into which all the ideas, complaints, suggestions, and attitudes of the student body are launched. The most important benefit of the Student Council is that the students of Sacred Heart are given an opportunity to express their ideas, and are able to have a part in the administration of the school. Student Council Plans activities — Crazy Hat Day, New Year's Eve Party, Volleyball Tournament, Crazy Shoe Day, Dances Works for the betterment of the school — Purchasing the Great Books, operates the candy store, co-ordinates events Officers attend district and state meetings, thereby learning from the ideas and experiences of other schools. Sacred Heart s successful year and good spirit are due in large part to the Student Council. When people are a part of something they naturally work to make it better. We sincerely hope that future Councils will continue to give each student the opportunity of expressing his opinion, and that the Student Council will always remain a pillar of Sacred Heart. d JL ft ■ DONALD R. They would gather in the home of the minister to talk to his slave, Tituba. She told the children stories filled with magic and superstition that she had known in her youth. The children began pretending and acting strangely. The grownups said that the children were bewitched. The girls realized that their game of make-believe had gone too far so they accused some of the most respected men and women in the village of being witches. The furor followed: one innocent and God-fearing person after another was examined, tried, and hanged. The plot of the story revolves about John Proctor s sin of lechery. Although he has repented his crime, his accomplice, Abigail Williams, refuses to let him forget her. For about three months of every year I contribute my whole self to football. These months are hard and testing, but it proves to be a major step toward manhood. It has an effect upon personal discipline — discipline that would not be fully developed if it were not demanded of a person on and off' the gridiron. It not only developes ones body physically, but also, prepares one mentally and spiritually to face the responsibilities of adulthood. 7'99 9i B Teom My entire attitude toward football has changed this year. I am playing my heart out for the simple reason that we have good coaches. Our coaches are making men out of us, and we realize and appreciate this. We have good school spirit both on and off the field; I will give the coaches full credit for this. They have taught us to take hard licks and face up to reality; we have taken a major step toward physical and mental maturity.
