yJas or's TIT ess aye To the Greeks and to the Barbarians, to the wise and to the unwise, I am a debtor. St. Paul. These are strange words, difficult to understand. It would seem that, far from Paul’s owing anything to those he mentions, the shoe was on the other foot, and that they owed much to him. Paul, very well educated, had been taught by some of the best men of his day. True, he felt that he owed something to the Greeks for their culture - but why to the barbarians? What could he owe them? He may have wished to show his gratitude to the wise by admitting that he was a debtor to them. To the unwise and barbarians because they had given him a chance to do something which he might otherwise have been unable to do. They had given him an opportunity to sacrifice himself for them, to spend himself in their service, and to try to raise them up from the abyss of pagan beliefs in which they had fallen. They had given him an opportunity to practice charity and show brotherly love towards those who did not appreciate it. This opportunity which was given to Paul and which made him confess: I am a debtor is offered to everyone of you dear graduates. You are debtors first of all to your dear parents. Your parents have sacrificed many many times in your behalf, they have given their time to hard work to keep you in school. You are debtors, life-long debtors to your teachers. They have given you something that no one can take from you - a sound Christian Catholic Education. They have sacrificed time for pleasure - many nights struggling through theme papers, and believe me that is no fun. They have raised you upas St. Paul did the unwise pagans and taught you the principles wherewith you are now to fight the world and the devil. They have given you the tools to fight with, they have taught you how to think, they have taught you how to act. They have given you everything that they have learned over a long span of years. Besides being debtors to your parents and teachers, we are all debtors to God. He gave us everything we have, life, talents, health and happiness. To Him we are life-long debtors and we can never hope to repay Him. He only asks of us to live as Christians and He has given you the rules, namely the ten commandments. We can also make God a debtor if we live lives as Christians and live by the precepts He has given us. Dear graduates you are at the cross-roads of life. Now you have to choose. Choose well because the Community always wants to be proud of you and wants to say that you are a graduate of Sacred Heart. God bless you today and always, and always remember regardless where you drift from here, we will always welcome you back home. Remember your good teachers regardless of where you go, they have done their part well, now it depends on you.
