The officers of the Footlight Club are pictured discussing plans for the annual play- CODKESE. They are: Mary jo Suter, Prrsicleutg Marybeth Butler, Viet'-Prrsidenlg Adele Carey, Treasurer, and Marilyn Meers, Secretary. Vocational play, entitled So You Want To Be A Nun, was presented as a climax to vocation week. A part of the cast is, seated: Mary Doyle, Marybeth Butler, Catherine Langenfeld, Irene Railton, Doris Johnson, Dorothy Kenner, and standing: Patricia Fur- long, Eleanor Lawless, and Illa Mae Cler. The remainder of the cast is pictured here. Seated: Eileen Ryan, joan Wendell, Louise Brandis, and Barbara Englumg standing: Mary Kraus, Marilyn Meers, Nancy Wfright, joseph- ine Murphy, Pat Murphy, and Joan Oshcskyg and kneeling: Eleanor Lawless. Curtain Goin UP!! SEPTEMBER Under the competent leadership of Sister Mary Isabelle, the Footlight Club was organ- ized with a membership of approximately 100 girls. Margaret Wetterau represented the group on a city-wide .radio contest, What is Dernocracyn sponsored by the Jaycees. OCTOBER Senior members became directors of the one-act plays, the casts consisting of Fresh- men, Spohomores, and Juniors. Patricia Murphy attended the City Youth Panel which discussed current problems. NOVEMBER So You Want To Be A Nun, a voca- tional play advocating the great need for girls in religious orders throughout the world, was presented by the Senior members for the club. A repeat performance was later given for out-of-town guests. DECEMBER Silent Night, Holy Nightly, Everyone Was indeed silent when the curtain went up on the beautiful tableau picturing the Nativ- ity. Preceding this appealing scene, was the Christmas play, The Birds' Christmas Carol, given by Sophomore club members. JANUARY Curtain calls were demanded from the future Sarah Bernhardts of the club as they took time out to participate in the operetta, The Firefly.

The gay and delight- ful operetta The Fire- flyl' presented by the students of Sacred Heart Academy was received by the public with tre- mendous enthusiasm. A performance of this kind could not be given without extraordinary teamwork on the part of directors and cast. Many telegrams, much fan mail, and a multi- tude of verbal congrat- ulations testiiied to the audience's complete en- joyment of the show. FEBRUARY The Firefly having been a huge success, the club members became even more the- atrically inclined as they watched the variety of one act plays so ably directed by the Seniors. MARCH St. Thomas Aquinas was honored by beautiful tableaux illustrating incidents from his life as Joan Oshesky related the events. At their weekly meetings, the club members were taught the fundamentals of dramatics by Sr. M. Isabelle, adviser. APRIL Because of the ever-increasing spread of Communism in the United States a panel discussion was presented pointing out that A Knowledge of Our Own Democracy ls The Only Means To Combat Communistic Idealogyf' MAY Several members gave dramatic readings in the Spring recitals. The Footlight Club of 1948 adjourned with a party honoring the winners of the one-act play contest. Curtain Goin Downff Another feature of the Christmas program WHS 2 play starring the Sophomore members or the Club. The play was The Birds' Christmas Carol, a heart- warming story of a charming family that was willing to bring joy to others by sharing their Christmas and fgund happiness by doing so.
