On the unusually hot San Francisco morning of September 18, 2009, the SHCP student body gathered for the much anticipated Walkathon fundraiser in Golden Gate Park. All hyped up on school spirit, the Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen, lined up and began their journey around the park. After a couple of hours Walking, the students returned to the Polo Fields hungry and tired Where they enjoyed a Well deserved barbeque lunch. ' Pl?0ww if Due to the construction of the new theater, this year's Fall Production of Romeo and Juliet took place in a new venue, the De Paul Little Theater. The play was staged in contemporary San Francisco, where two star-crossed lovers from rival households fell in love and eventually paid the price for their parent's feud. Our talented Sl-ICP actors devoted their time to perfecting their lines and cues. The Production Crew worked hours constructing and painting the set, assisting the cast with makeup and costumes, and adjusting the lighting and sound for each scene. The positive feedback from the crowd made the countless hours of hard work put in by the cast and crew well worth it. This team Works hard to fulfill this full-time commitment. We make, hang, and take down posters, We make and play playlists. We are obsessed With fruit, fun, and endless spirit. Many students believe that SBC is solely focused on Student Council events, such as dances, holiday grams, and lunchtime events. While this is very true -and believe us, We LOVE it- We also help out Campus Ministry, LVY, the Administration, Block Club, and Big Green. Chances are, if there's an event going on at school, we're involved. The Student Leaders meet once a month, and We love planning the menu and feeding our fellow leaders. This year, Princess Project was chosen as our Way of giving back to the San Francisco community. Each council must also choose a gram to sell and distribute. Winter Grams were our task. Other activities with which We assist are the bid sales for Homecoming and Winter Ball, the gram sales of other councils, and any seasonal events that occur. When we are needed to make posters or flyers, We are there. Junior Council Works closely with the other class councils to ensure that every activity and event runs smoothly, While dedicating long hours to perfecting the details. Every Monday, a select group of students prepare for a long night of discussion and debate with fellow friends and classmates. They converse with each other on various subjects within philosophy. Ethics, Psychology, Economics, and Theology are only a few of the themes they explore. Perhaps the most notorious undertaking of Senior Seminar is the tremendous January Project. While it is a big commitment, it is also one of the most gratifying portions of the class. Seminar students synthesize large and varied disciplines into one single quality presentation. The presentations allows the students to teach one another about their individual interests and passions. Taking place in the De Paul Campus' Little Theater, the musical about a 1960s flower shop with an interesting new addition Ca giant, man-eating plantb, was a hit with students, faculty and our community. Senior Tim Green and sophomore Danielle Briseno led a cast full of all-stars and Skid Row was brought to life on stage with a set consisting of lVlushnik's Flower Shop and a dentist office occupied by a sadistic dentist played by senior John Herndon. Not only was the set extremely realistic for the small space, but the costumes were also amazing and there was even some experimenting with handheld spotlighting. The plant itself, played by senior Sam Gardner and voiced by senior Will Lyons, was one of the most exciting elements, swallowing three cast members whole. If this is what can be done now, next year's musical in the new theater should be our best ever! Nw MMM A small group of Sacred Heart Cathedral students is chosen each year to participate in the Venaver service immersion trip to New Orleans. There they are partnered with the organization Catholic Charities to engage in service and community building. Venaver New Orleans provides students important learning experiences by dedicating a week to promote cultural awareness, live in service to communities, and reflect upon the role that faith plays in different aspects of their lives. Working with Catholic Charities in New Orleans gives students the opportunity to help those who were tragically affected by Hurricane Katrina. This is done through the rebuilding and painting of houses. Not only did students volunteer in rebuilding homes, but they were also given the chance to explore New Orleans. From visiting the French Quarter to listening to famous jazz bands, the students will never forget the experiences they had and the hearts they touched in New Orleans. 1 X x X 'Q 215 T M M Kx rx ,Wg '- 'F ll ,JAG X Nfflp ,HN vxxbf ,AAXN From Feburary 20th to the .2'?th, the second of the Venaver New Orleans groups ventured out to that unique city to help with rebuilding efforts. Together, the eleven juniors and seniors, escorted by three teachers, completed the painting of three houses while the city celebrated the Saints' Super Bowl championship. The group worked through Catholic Charities' Project Open Hand, an organization trying to rebuild New Orleans one house at a time. Students learned about the environmental struggles of Lake Pontchartrain, explored the French Quarter, listened to jazz music at Preservation Hall, and heard the heartbreaking stories of victims of Hurricane Katrina. While in New Orleans, the group experienced first hand the culture and strength of its people. The week-long immersion experience opened their eyes and now our students are sharing with the rest of the Sacred Heart Cathedral community what they learned in the Big Easy. Activities for the participants included working at a homeless shelter, a visit to a migrant farm Worker camp, and gleaning of the fields. The students spent countless hours in the homeless kitchen and shelter for women, called Dorothy's Place. fd, ., .5 wi Everyday, they served breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the people, which was an enjoyable and heartwarming experience for everyone involved. At the migrant Worker camp, our students met and played with the children of the farm workers. They got together, shared stories, and even played sports. The last activity Was the gleaning of the fields, which is the removal of leftover crops after the initial harvesting. It was a really fun experience that required some very hard labor.
