Still, students find spare time to go to games, participate in rallies, and spend time with their classmates. They may not remember the details of the Civil War or how to solve a quadratic equation, but they will definitely remember their Student Life activities for years to come. Going to the Bruce Mahoney games, participating in the rallies, and hanging out with their friends during games, dances, plays, and concerts create memories that will be engraved in their minds. Student Life gives the students a break from their hectic lives, and, most importantly, it gives them wonderful stories they will cherish and take with them fora lifetime. More than 140 students from ten different schools collected for this program to live out the message of faith, service, and community. In the mornings and afternoons, students participated in prayer and service opportunities. During the evening, students reflected on their day and had some fun. Some projects the students participated in included cleaning the Oakland shoreline and creating a carnival in Golden Gate Park. The end of school, the beginning of summer school, or the start of an adventure? Last summer, three groups of students from SHCP had the adventure of studying language, history and culture, while living with native families. A group of 22 students traveled to Spain where they visited historical cities and studied in Salamanca. Another group of 8 students went to Inuyama, J apan, a five year tradition, where they encountered a different lifestyle and tasted the culture in the land of the rising sun. Finally, 8 students went to Mexico, where they studied and did many similar activities as the other groups. But, this trip was different because it also involved service learning. After a morning of Spanish the students helped out at a local orphanage with activities and tutoring. Even though each culture is different in its unique way, one thing was common: the mfense heat.
