A New Tradition At SH' TOM SPILLANE sENlon CF Ti-IE SHAIVIROCK An exceptional athlete and an excellent student are words that seldom fit the description of one individual. A person who doesfitthis suit, however, is Senior Thomas Spillane. For this reason he has been chosen asthe Senior of 1983 in the first Senior of the Years contest put on by the Shamrock. During his four years at Sacred Heart, Tom has played basketball, baseball and football treaching the varsity level in two of these sports, namely baseball and footballl. He has reached the same level of excellence in the classroom as he has on the playing field. His determination in the desk has touched the subjects of English, science, and mathematics. After complet- ing Math Analysis during his junior year, he found he had taken every class offered by the Math Department at Sacred Heart. He will have accomplished the same in the English and Science Depart- ments after completing AXP English and Physics this year. Before attending Sacred Heart, Tom was a student at St. Anne's Grammar School. lt was there that he developed his atheletic interests. He was a forward on his CYO Champion 8th grade basket- ball team and he al: participated on the school's baseball and soccer teams. Among his teammates at St. Anne's were fellow Seniors Jim and Jerry Horan, Chris Knorr, Pat Nevin, Charlie Llorence, and Eoin C'ReilIy. The person who had the most influence on Tom, however, l think we have a good graduating class this year. was his 8th grade basketball coach, Mike Horan tJim and Jerry's older brother.l According to Tom, Mike made them hustle and play physical ball. Their aggressive style overcame their deficiencies in height and skill. Here at Sacred Heart, Tom credits many of his accomp- lishments on the field to Varsity Football Coach Rick Trestrail. He stressed fi l ili ' 4? patience, sticking with yoL goals, and hard work fc success. Tom feels the Coach Trestrail, through hi dedication, brought out th best of his and the entir team's abilities. Nlodestly Tom considers himself onl an average player at best. Now, as graduation grow nearer, Tom can sti remember how he chos Sacred Heart over S.l. an Ri-ordan. S.l. seemed to preppy, and Riordan seeme like a bunch of bums and dru addicts. SH was the mos down to earth school. High school went by s quickly, Tom recalls, I didn know what to expect when was a Freshman. I looked u to Seniors and kind of feare them. Now I feel that th Freshmen look to us fo leadership. When you're Senior, you have to set a example. You've got to tak charge and teach the littl guys, because you want ther to have pride in their school. think we have a goo graduating class this year. For now, Tom Spillan lives with his family of six i the Sunset. Tom is one of fo children. He has two old? sisters and a younger brothe Paul Spillane, who is sophomore here at Sacre Heart.
