Since that day in January, 1874, when the first Brothers opened the doors of the College at Eddy and Larkin Streets, Sacred Heart has contributed tremendously to the growth of the Church in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. lStatement of Arch- bishop Mitty on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Sacred Heart in 1949.1 The original Sacred Heart, established in downtown San Francisco in 1874, was completely demol- ished by the earthquake and fire of 1906. Through the generosity of Father McQuade of Sacred Heart parish, a building was provided for the Sacred Heart students at 735 Fell, near Fillmore. This remained the site of Sacred Heart until 1914, when the present site at Franklin and Ellis was purchased by Archbishop Riordan. Originally two stories, the building had to be enlarged to its present height in 1919 by Archbishop Hanna. The entire building was renovated and a gymnasium added in 1952-53, under the super- vision of Archbishop Mrtty edrtor ass t editor moderator photography ass-I EE Ez. ami li rr'-rf l 1 rn- to-r-vrqt'i'?rv F:-rr' EEF-V3 lf E PR E' rmfnwegegea iq the IIII IIII IIII IIII IIII ham rock for Ed Coscl 56 .'.' dedication of the 1956 SHAMROCK to Bishop Donohoe tries, in a small way, to convey the gratitude of each Sacred Heart student to a man who is not only a Bishop and a shepherd of souls, but pastor, confessor, and friend. We have pictured him below in a familiar role, for his regularity in the confessional on Friday mornings has become another Sacred Heart tradition. i 1 l l 1 l MOST REVEREND HUGH A.
