Commencement exercises, precisely because they come at the end of the school year, often lose much of their meaning. If we're not graduating ourselves, the event doesn't touch us at all. And if we chance to be the fourth-year men involved, we 're apt to be still in such a swirl from the exclusive, the picnic, and other senior- week activities that full realization doesn't dawn until that awful moment, when, weak-kneed and perspiring, we grasp our diploma, and manage to get back to our seats. And when we stand to sing for the last time the Sacred Heart alma mater, we know, in truth, that an end has come to some of the happiest days of our lives. A x x EEEEH! rwlrlvirilill Since that day in January, 1874, when the first Brothers opened the doors of the College at Eddy and Larkin Streets, Sacred Heart has contributed tremendously to the growth of the Church in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. lStatement of Arch- bishop Mitty on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Sacred Heart in 1949.1 The original Sacred Heart, established in downtown San Francisco in 1874, was completely demol- ished by the earthquake and fire of 1906. Through the generosity of Father McQuade of Sacred Heart parish, a building was provided for the Sacred Heart students at 735 Fell, near Fillmore. This remained the site of Sacred Heart until 1914, when the present site at Franklin and Ellis was purchased by Archbishop Riordan. Originally two stories, the building had to be enlarged to its present height in 1919 by Archbishop Hanna. The entire building was renovated and a gymnasium added in 1952-53, under the super- vision of Archbishop Mrtty edrtor ass t editor moderator photography ass-I EE Ez. ami li rr'-rf l 1 rn- to-r-vrqt'i'?rv F:-rr' EEF-V3 lf E PR E' rmfnwegegea iq the IIII IIII IIII IIII IIII ham rock for Ed Coscl 56 .'.'
