nuinwffamfg 1897 1947 541 n 1-5 Remzmscmg ' At all times but especially at the time of an anniversary celebration our Yearbook Title REMINISCOR CI recall to mind! IS most appropriate This year we are reminding everybody that Just ten years ago REMINISCOR had its begin ning But looking back to earlier horizons we search into the beginnings of the school we love so well There we discover that in the days when Dakota was a Territory The Right Reverend Martin Marty OSB its first Bishop invited the Presentation Sisters of Georges H111 Convent Dublin Ireland to take charge of an Indian School near Yankton South Dakota Mother M St John was the first to volunteer Sisters from other Presentation Convents including her own sister Mother M Agnes soon Jolned her They reached Yankton 1n 1880 and spent two years there trying to cope with unfavorable circumstances In 1882 the Sisters accepted an invitation to come to Fargo and airived here July 22 1882 Father Stephan had secured a house for them close to the Church As soon as possible the Sisters built a Convent at the site of the present St John s Orphanage and dedicated it to Saint Joseph Here the Sisters continued to teach until 1897. In May of that year the Sisters purchased the Yerxa residence on North Broadway' this was the beginning of Sacred Heart Academy. Then St. Josephs Convent changed its title to St. John s Orphanage. In 1903 the Sisters introduced the four-year high school course. The en- rollment continued to increase and at intervals new buildings appeared. Foremost in the educational work of those days was Mother M. Baptista. With the introduction of high school work began such worries as credits and classification-the problems that cause us so much anxiety these days. 'How- ever we are proud of the standards the Academy maintains-Class A rating from the State Accrediting Board Membership in the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and affiliation with the Catholic University of America. This difficulty Shack overcame by means of competent and ambitious staff. Shack workers are to be particularly commended for maintaining a high scholastic average in addition to their extra work on Shack. Members of this loyal staff would never haxe finished the year in their sane mind. if they had not felt that a certain amount of student appreciation and support was behind them. Shack was initiated as a mission paper in 1931 by Father Hendrickson s religion class. The name. Shack, then meaning Sacred Heart Academy Club Kernels was chosen by members of that class. Later the C of Club was changed to class as the paper was adopted by the whole school. Today Shack is more a school paper than a mission paper. Howcxer, thc original idea is kept in mind by means of a mission collection taken up the first Friday of every month and sent to various missions. Some of these repre- sentatives stand in the halls at assigned places to preserve order at the time of change of classes. Problems of the students are always the interest of the council. The president and xice presi- dents take turns saying prayers and conducting the affairs of the assembly. The Councils counselor is Father Scheller who helps them in many ways. One of the Student Councils chief works of the year was to arrange for the flooding of a skating rink on a lot at the rear of the school. Q-JK l 3 if Q 21 rv- Q -. We wish we could give you a complete picture of their many activities, but the best we can do is to get a snap here and there. Below is a section of our typing room, to which they added six new machines at the beginning of this school year. The next page shows different groups responding to our calls-at the Piggly Wiggly Stores put- ting on bake sales to raise funds, serving picnic suppers to hungry football p la y e r s, attending monthly Council Meetings even in stormy weather, and last but not least, attending to our material needs during the days that we are all absorbed in the spiritual problems of the Annual Retreat. Not only are we very proud of our Academy Council, but we are also very grateful to our Parents for the appreciation they express in action for the work being done at Sacred Heart Academy.
