We feel that it is owing to her devotion to an ideal under God's plan, that our beautiful school was erected. Through her ideas and under her spirit and guidance the blueprints of a dream became a reality. Under her direction, the Sisters of St. Joseph have taught and guided us during the past four years. May our lives as Christian women prove a just return for Reverend Mother Charles EdWard's kindly interest in all who attend Sacred Heart Academy. I 1 To one of the brightest jewels that shine in our memory chest-to one who put a piece of herself in every brick that went into the actual building of Sacred Heart Academy so that when it was finished, she was a very real part of it-to one Who during the first two and a half years of our high school careers gave her all that we might prove worthy graduates. ALONZO When Sister came to us last September, it Was only a matter of days before We all realized that, provided We gave her our cooperation, there would be no limits to her help, sympathy, energy, and interest. Through the months, it was not unusual to see her in the halls or at her desk, or to hear her voice, which has become so familiar, over the P.A. system or at assembly, carrying words of entreaty or advice, but always words of wisdom. Sister,s experience with high schools in former years has truly proved beneficial as now we find ourselves grown out of our infancy into the maturity of a school worthy to be called academy. Page ten fflfzzcf avi at C wif exe W W HROUGH the untiring efforts of our fac- ulty, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the four years which We have spent Within the walls of this beautiful school have enriched our lives mor- ally, spiritually and intellectually. Under their instruction We have been shown the Way to master the languages, arts and sciences. By their guidance we have been helped to mold our characters. The Sisters have shown us the way to become good citizens and upright Catholic Women able to take our place in the community. Above all they have infused in our hearts a knowledge and love of God. We thank the Sisters for the many sacrifices they have made for us during these past four years. The members of the Leo Honor Society are first chosen according to their rank in the class. However, this is merely the first step. From here, the names of the girls are given to each of their teachers for approval. If a girl has high marks, but has proved herself to be uncoopera- tive, disrespectful, selhsh, proud, or unfriendly towards classmates, or, in general, unworthy to be accepted into the Leo Honor Society, these teachers are obliged in conscience to bring this into consideration. However, if a girl has done her work, proved herself to be friendly, consid- erate, and respectful, the teachers will pass her name on for acceptance. Page seventy-fmn' This may seem thorough enough to many. But to those in charge of the Leo Honor Society, it is still not enough. From here, the names of the candidates are sent to their parishes. The Pastor of each girl must vouchsafe for her church spirit, her Catho- lieity, her actions outside of school, away from the Sisters. All church activities must be men- tioned, for example, Confraternity, the Blessed Virgin Sodality. the choir, and so on. Sulvfmi11uri'i, lfirxf Rolf: P. Mcliahcy, M. Falvey. M. Xvisc. lf. Reception into the Leo Honor Society takes place during an assembly in the latter part of September. Before the entire student body, one girl from each class receives her Leo Honor pin from the hands of Sister Alonzo. It is a small circular gold and white pin with the Words Leo Honor Society, Diocese of Brooklyn enscribed in small print. In the center is the emblem of the Society. In this organization, prayers and good works of the members are given to Mary to be offered to Her Son. Because of the Sacred Heart Academy leg- ionnaires, the Sisters and Priests in missionary countries can reward their catechism classes with beautiful religious bookmarks, there is a larger dt supply of disposal bags in hospitals, and mission communities are able to add to their funds through used stamps collected and trimmed by these girls. These members too, have enabled parents to fulfill religious obligations and attend additional Church services when they cared for the children of the family. It is these girls who are responsible for entertaining and bringing a little cheer to orphans and young muscular- dystraphy patients. Offerings of extra school serv- ices, lending a hand at home and study help are given to Our Lady to give to Jesus. Officers of Our Luffy of Ibn Nafivity Prursidium: J. Pappalardo, B. Jakubowski, M. A true member attends the weekly meetings where she says the complete Tessara and the Rosary. Here she reports her hour of manual work performed the preceding week and receives an assignment for the next week. Mary is present at the center of each meeting. Her statue stands on a table between two burning candles and two vases of flowers. The oflicers and the spiritual director sit beside the table and conduct the meeting but all recognize Mary as the presiding ofhcer. It is to Her the prayers are addressed. To Her the members' efforts are offered that She might more worthily present them to the Divine Savior. The Academy has enthusiastically joined Mary's Legion. Nearly a quarter of the school belongs to this sole activity dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Four years ago, two praesidia were formed: Our Lady of the Nativity, whose spiritual director is Sister Mary Ulick, and Our Lady of Fatima, whose spiritual director is Sister Regina Fidelis. Our Lady of the Nativity Praesidium meets each Wednestlay in Room 206. This year its president has been Barbara Jakubowski and its vice-president, Mary Jean Phippard. Nuala McCann and ,Ioan Poppalardo served respectively as secretary and treasurer. ln Room 212, Our Lady of Fatima Praesidium meets on Tuesdays. Mary Ann Scott is its presi- dent. A final constitution was drafted setting up in it many ideas and practices which will become in the future definite traditions of Sacred Heart. The purpose of this organization is to bring a closer union between the students and faculty. This has been accom- plished by bringing to the attention of both the needs and desires of the other. Student Council consists of all home-room presidents and the president of each extra-cur- ricular activity. Each girl proudly wears a special Student Council badge on her uniform. One of the achievements of the Council this year was the formation of the Marionettes, the Dramatic Club. The success of this project has already been proved by the outstanding performance they gave. From that point the actual work began. We cannot imagine civilization with- out song, the radio without its Hit Paradev nor Sacred Heart Academy wthout its Glee Club. Although we have only had our charter since last year, the Glee Club is the only extra-curricular activity that has existed since the foundation of the Academy. And its reputation has already spread throughout our diocese. The good name of this choral group is not just a matter of chance. It is due, no doubt, to the expert direction of Sister Mary Immaculate and the hours of prepara- tion and practice given to singing by Sister and the girls. Sister M. Laurina. The Madonnas were selected throughout the student body, but the choir speak- ing groups were composed of members of the Art Club. Under the direction of Sister Elizabeth Loretto, the cast and speaking group met every morning at eight o'clock and practiced until school began. Rehearsals were held in every imaginable place, on the bleachers, in the basement, everywhere. Everyone worked toward the success of the play. The play centered around Our Lady, played by Kerin Moore, holding the Light of the World in her arms. Five girls representing women of all ages of all times came to Our Lady with their problems on Christmas Eve and asked Her to comfort them. The first woman is a young Roman mother who is followed in sequence by a martyr, a queen, a pioneer woman, and a modern girl. The cast was chosen from the Senior members of the speech club. They were assisted by a choral speaking group and the Glee Club. Following the play the Seniors presented the traditional Christmas pag- eant. The girls from the Home Economics classes very graciously gave their time for the making of costumes for both productions. JJ 6114511695 With the beginning of the fall term of 1953, a new idea was ushered in to the delight of the student body. Our principal, Sister M. Alonzo, permitted us to use the last hour on Thursday afternoons for assemblies. Through this medium, we have been entertained by many well-known personalities as well as our own home-grown talent. All of the assemblies were not enacted merely for amusement but many of them were used for educational purposes. The first assembly, The S. D. S. Campaign was performed by the seniors and it impressed upon the student body the need for modesty in dress. The girls wore formals which complied with the standards of the S.D.S. The dresses demonstrated the fact that though they were modest, they could still be beautiful and unique. At the close of this assembly the entire student body consecrated itself to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The talent for the next assembly was gener- ously supplied by the Speech Club. Members of the club illustrated the art of dramatic interpreta- tion. The skits were enacted without the help of props and helped to sharpen the imagination of the students. For Christmas, the students exerted a special effort to produce the inspiring and deeply moving choral pageant, At the Feet of the Madonna. It was so good and so well acted that it was per- formed for the parents of the students to try to spread a little of the Christmas spirit. This was one of the outstanding assemblies of the year. j. At another assembly Muriel Zimmerman of the Regina Coeli Art Center, impressed upon the students the important place Christ has in art. She told of the sense conscious Renaissance Art and the true Catholic 3l1'E. Her talk was very informative. The Propagation of the Faith was stressed in the movie shown by liather Hanlon. After the movie, liather talked to the girls and stressed the importance of foreign missions and the dire need of missionaries to spread the Catholic faith. A wonderful pianist, Erman Laszlo, held the girls spellbound when he played many beautiful selections, both classical and popular. He sang a medley of Irish folk songs which the girls thoroughly enjoyed, and he enthralled them with his genial manner and his pleasing voice. To every student, the problem of vocation is a big question, and the juniors tried to help the girls with their St. Joseplfs assembly concerning religious vocations. The season of Lent brings with it the desire to see a passion play, and the Dramatics Club Linder the guidance and supervision of Sister Marie Therese entcted The Upper Room. This was the first public performance of the club and was much appreciated by the students. This play will always be remembered for its simplicity and beautiful dialogue. Another play in a lighter vein was put on by the seniors. This play was an hilarious one act comedy entitled The Ugly Ducltlingn by Milme. This assembly was put on to relieve the tension of midterm exams and was greatly appreciated by the students. These assemblies provided a wide variety of entertainment during the year. They were both educational and amusing and broke up the steady grind of school work. Page mic lzufzdrerl nine Father Wendell meditates for moment before Bencdiction. The Divine Praise is echoed in the hearts of all. It seems as though more effort is put to work in making this the most outstanding presentation of the year, probably because it is spring, and we are all filled with a new energy and fresh ideas. The air is tense with excitement as we run through our numbers. As the curtain rose on the long awaited night this year the Glee Club burst into song with the Star Spangled Banner, which is the traditional opening of the musical. Then the president welcomed the audience on behalf of the entire music department. The Glee Club opened the program this year with the school song, Ad Jesum per Mariamf' The song is dedicated to the Sacred Heart through the Blessed Mother. lt is also the motto of our school. Q- Mew . t i.....llL'4,'lI 1.4 ,- 'CUIVIICJ A he Croxvning of Qui' Blessed lady on May Day is one of the most beautiful and solemn occasions at the Saeretl Heart Academy. On the elay, the entire student body, letl by the May Queen and her attendants, assemble to pay honor publicly to Mary, Queen of Peace and to ask her intercession before the throne of God for Peace in a troubled world. Father Ciilliek always gives a very inspiring talk on the powers of the Queen of lleaven to obtain for us the grace to enjoy eternal happiness with her Divine Son. The ceremonies are closed with Benetlietion of the lilesserl Sacrament at the beautiful altar bedeeketl with flowers. 'F t Q sf U' ,Qs H ig fyrjttiiws' 'S-'s ,Qi 1' , i 43g,'5s Q F . C !'Icl4lllzl!le'll Page one hundred twenty Of all the events to look forward to, to be proud of, to remember when high school is over, the most momentous is Graduation. After twelve years of schooling, the seniors have well deserved the long awaited privilege of receiving diplomas and the ceremony is the most planned one of the year, recalling years of study and learning, of laughter and sorrow, of growth mentally, physically and spiritually. With the first strains of the Graduation March, each girl realizes finally that the big day has arrived and with each slow step down the so familiar aisle comes the realization that soon the days at Sacred Heart Academy will be a memory, sweet and happy, of long and deep friendships. Mounting the steps to the stage seems to parody the four slow steps taken each year, in the gradual ascent in catholiciry and personality. Looking down from the stage each girl sees the faces of those to whom she owes the l110St. Gratitude swells the heart and fills the eyes, for without Mother and Dad, so loving, without the Sisters so tireless and unselfish, there would have been no days at S.H.A. and no graduation.
