A -- AINT JOSEPH, Prince of Carpenter-Men, built, mended and rebuilt according to the plans and Wishes of his clien- tele among the Nazarenes. All this he did for Mary and through Mary for Jesus. Thus, We might say that he has ever been a model for those who Wish to build in the material World. As the Christ Child grew in years, He, too, in imitation of His foster-father, set out to build. But His field of labor was the things of the spirit . . . the things that meant so much to His Heavenly Father . . . an expansion of His Kingdom through- out the world. And so, the Sacred Heart has been a symbol for the constructors and expanders of the spiritual World. Both Saint Joseph and the Sacred Heart have been omnipresent in our lives here at Sacred Heart Academy. The name of our school, the emblems We so proudly Wear, the coat of arms that decorates our building, the school motto-all bespeak the tender affection We have for them. Love for Christ prompted the foundation of this very school. Love for Him has filled us with a daily need and desire to accom- plish something toward His Honor and Glory. And it has always been Saint Joseph who gave us the right plan of action. He could point out the hard but sure road of sacrifice, the humble but loving means of serving Christ a bit better. Yes, We have been doubly blessed! With Saint Joseph, our builder in the material sense, and the Sacred Heart, a Builder of the spiritual, our school has emerged, dedicated to the achievement of true Catholic Womanhood. That is Why the theme of our first issue of EX-CORDE is THE BUILDER. - Page eleven !f'lTT'Jf 0 ' 0261-' NGS' 4 5 CJ 0 A Q L , J UNT IEN TS ? Rev. Monsignor Henry Hald, Rev. Father Sheehy, Sister Augustine Maria and Rev. Father Powers just before the N THE FALL of I949, Sacred Heart Academy othcially opened as The Mary Louis Academy Annex in the little white house located at 47 Cathe- dral Avenue, Hempstead. It was a humble beginning -a small frame building hlled with electricians, car- penters, plasterers and painters as they hurried about in their effort to provide temporary classrooms. To the fifty-eight girls who arrived that September 8th, the first week of half-school days was an exciting, pleasurable solution to the morning camp ehair seat- ings and the scarcity of hlacltboardsl The second week was school in all its realism. The acting princi- pal, Sister Alta Maria, and the teaching staff, Sister Laurina, Sister Regina Maria and Sister -lohn Fran- cine, comprised the faculty for the hrst year. In the early part of -Iune, 1950, an invitation was extended to the many friends of the little school to attend an impressive ceremony to be held on the Ifeast of the Sacred Heart, -lune 16th. It was to be the laying of the cornerstone of the new convent and Page f14'er1ty-:six breaking of the ground for the new Sacred lleart Academy. Sister Alala Nlaria. assisted by Sister Augusline Maria breaks ilu- ground. the breaking of the ground for the new Sacred Heart Academy. The much planned-for day finally dawned. It was a Friday-a warm, sunny day-and it seemed as if the Sacred Heart had planned the day just for Himself. Right Reverend Monsignor Joseph V. S. McClancy, Diocesan Superintendent of Schools, ofliciated. The ground for the new high school building was broken first by Monsignor McClancy and then Reverend Mother Charles Edward and Sister Alta Maria assisted by Sister Augustine Maria each in turn continued to deepen the first excavation. Throughout the year 1949-1950, construction work had been in process in the rear of the little white house. The convent that would house the Sisters who would teach in Sacred Heart Academy down through the future years was in the process of being built. On this day, its cornerstone was to be laid. The clergy, religious, honored guests and students proceeded from the field to the new convent founda- tion. The steel box that held all the traditionally ap- propriated mementos of those present was lowered into place. After the blessing by the Monsignor and the fervent prayers of all those attending, the con- structors set the massive stone and the final ceremony of the day was terminated. The glee club and orchestra from the Mary Louis Academy, jamaica, attended and together with our own glee club provided the musical selections for the occasion. Monsignor McClancy delivered an address praising the work done by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in the Held of education in the diocese. Thus - the first big day, the first public ceremony of our school, came to an end. But to us it was like the Hrst chapter in our story - a story that We hoped and prayed would go on for generations to come - the story of Sacred Heart Academy. Erecting our school in Hempstead has required planning and foresight on the part of our Diocesan authorities, sacrifice and prayers for a religious com- munity, action and leadership of our Catholic laymen. Yes, it had cost much-in money, materials, spirit and talent. But the cost was worth the price- an- other way of adding to the honor and glory of His Sacred Heart -another means of spreading Christian faith and hope and charity. Sacred Heart Academy was indeed becoming a reality. In a wide, open field, the ground had been broken. Two years later, a three story brick building, a perfect example of practical, modern design would appear' in that field. And for all that was done prior to and including this memorable June 16th-the glee club sang the words that were in our hearts, Christus Regnatf' Rt. Rev. Monsignor McClancy lays the cornerstone for the new Sacred Heart Convent as Reverend Mother Charles Ifdward. Sister Francis Guiseppe and Sister Alta Maria attend during the ceremony. Yes, Christ was to reign as the patron of rhe new Academy, as the King of our Hearts. He was to build in us and on us so that we might be worthy to set forth to do His work here and hereafter. june 16th was over. But it meant so much-and we will never forget. lame' fuwlfy-sf'1'en WTO YEARS LATER! .Iune 20, 1952! liriday, the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The construction work of the new Sacred Heart Academy was prac- tically completed. Externally, only one block of ma- sonry had to be added-the cornerstone. This time, for a new school, a newly consecrated Bishop would perform his first public episcopal function. His Fx- cellency, the Most Reverend hlohn xl. Boardman, would lay the cornerstone. The day again was a beautiful one-and the cere- mony impressiye. A platform had been raised at the corner outside the gymyauditoriumg .1 public address system was secured to broadcast the ceremony and the Bishop's address to the hundreds of spectators gath- ered on the grounds. The eighth grade children of the Seminary, followed by the students of the Academy, led the procession. Then came the Sisters of the vari- ous Religious Communities, the visiting Clergy, and His Excellency, Bishop Boardman. lntoning with great solemnity the Deus in adju- torium meum intendeln Bishop Boardman blessed and laid the cornerstone, and with the aid of the building contractors, cemented it in place. Turning then to the assembly, he spoke of the need for Catholic principles in education! Singing Hlicce Sacerdosn a second time, the Clee l'1lgf' fu'r'11fy-rigllf lit. Club lcd the way into the gym-auditorium for Solemn Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Thus another great day was concluded with God's gracious blessing. lt was the orhcial opening of the gym-auditorium-for a few days later it was used for such social events as the Sophomore Hop and rhe junior Prom. The school itself was to be ready for student-occupancy the following September. The laying of the cornerstone marked Finis , for a time, to the cement mixers, to the plasterers, to the surveyors. It meant we were one step nearer the goal, the completely built and furnished Sacred Heart Academy ! The Glee Club's rendition of Praise the Lordi' fliiggsj and the Sancte Joseph made us mindful of the Two Who have accompanied us throughout our high school days--Our Two Builders-the Sacred Heart and Saint joseph. Again, we will never forget-time will perhaps erase the memory of the actual scene, but it can never steal from our hearts the great joy, the humble grati- tude that were ours as we knelt before the God Who had showered so many blessings upon us. l lis lfxcellenc 1 'fl 1 Qfiviffi-. .lm ' t Ei?2Zri3hg5?Zz'sf4z ft Sv gg ggigbiis T im? N A FEW' short months after the laying of the cornerstone, the years of hopes and plans, of sacri- fice and labor, culminated with the Dedication of our Sacred Heart Academy by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Thomas Ii. Molloy, Archbishop-Bishop of our diocese. lt was Sunday, October 26th, 1952, the lfeast of Christ the King. The solemn ceremonies began following the pro- cession of the Academy students, visiting religious and clergy, with the Archbishop's invocation of the Veni Creator, his recitation of the prayers, the bless- ing of the crucifixes and of various parts of the school. Sanctify, we beseech Thee, O Lord jesus Christ, this house built for the training of our girls, pour forth upon it the fullness of Thy blessing and peace. let that fullness be for them a means of salvation . . . may all those who dwell herein by leading a life of virtue, please Thee and . . . one day be received into the everlasting abode of heaven . . . Amen. Yes, we prayed with Him that God indeed might shower upon all in our school the graces necessary that we may one day meet again in the Sacred lleart. Solemn Benediction of rho Most Blessed Sacrament in the new gym-auditoriuin provided the only fitting conclusion for such a joyous, such a gratifying occa- sion for all of us. Our hearts indeed were full as the organ began to play and they poured forth in gratitude as the Cilee Club let the words of the hymn To Praise the Heart of jesus QP. Grieshacherj rise heavenward. How aptly did its invocation express our own deep feeling. To praise the heart of -Iesus To heaven's vaults ascending The chorus loud shall sing. May grateful hearts adore And praise Thee ever more! Three years ago, these inspiring words of the Legion prayer were versed for the first time in the Saercd Heart Academy by a group of young girls joining the newly organized Legion of Maryg a beau- tiful organization dedicated in its work to the Queen of all Queens, Our Lady. The first Praesidium. or unit, chose the title Our Lady of Nativity as it was the infant or nrst unit formed in the school. Sister Mary Ulick, spiritual directress of this praesidium, has, since its beginning, offered spiritual advice and ably moderated this large group of girls. Due to the increase in enrollment, a second unit was formed under the guidance of Sister Regina liidelis. Our Lady of lfatima, ever depicting the rosary, which is the backbone of the Legion, was chosen as the patroness of this praesidium. Numerous charitable works and daily prayers make up the basis of Legion duty. The weekly meetings comprise prayers and reports. Designing bookmarks out of used cards or making toy animals out of cloth to distribute to the poor or bedridden children are only a few of the many tasks the members oder to Our Lady as a token of love. The great zeal of the members of the Legion of Mary of Sacred Heart Academy has made it one of the most important activities in the school. Page fllirfy-fire Senior Af1l'IlI!7l'7'S fifcllltlillgjf P. At each meeting, Sister Miriam Dolores has something new to make or ship to the Helds afar, The girls mail the many packages at the end of each meeting. If you happen to peek in on one of the meetings you might see one group of girls cutting cancelled stamps. Then there is another group wrapping copies of Catholic newspapers to mail to some needy mission. Over in a corner some girls are folding clothes and others are sorting book marks. The whole room is a center of tape, cord, scissors, wrapping paper and boxes. Out of this hive of work come several neatly wrapped bundles containing many needy articles for the Missions. The feminine ending is suggestive of the heart of every girl in our Academy. Thus in C:ORDliTTlf we visualize the union of our hearts in the Sacred Heart. One of these, the senior group, is under the guidance of Sister Elizabeth Patri- cia, with President joan Fenety, Secretary Pat Mc- Carthy and Treasurer Virginia Bendin. The other, the junior group, with Sister James Catherine as moder- ator, has Betty Deleso, President, Anita Fleming, Vice-Presidentg Peggy Holzapfel, Secretary, and Bar- bara Ryan, Treasurer. The main purpose of Le Cercle Francais is to enable the girls to become more familiar with the French language in general and to become acquainted with the many beautiful sights in France. The meetings include many interesting projects such as the playing of French games, as well as par- ticipating in French plays and choral speaking. The Champs-Elysees and Notre Dame take on an appear- ance of life-like beauty as they are pictured on the screen. These Hlms are also another feature that the French Club presents to its members. P. Lining the halls, overseeing the locker rooms and stairs, constantly maintaining order, the Sacred Heart Leaders guide us toward discipline. These girls volunteer their free time between class periods to see all obey the school rules. Although always alert for misdemeanors, they urge self-discipline as a pathway to a strong character. They are models of uniform dress and strive to carry out all the regulations themselves. Directing traffic while the girls change classes is one of their biggest responsibilities. At the same time they see that silence is kept. During assemblies, similar order is upheld by them. Together they knelt at the altar rail to to receive the sacred species of Our Divine Redeem- erg father and daughter, together, returned thanks to the Christ reigning radiantly in their hearts. Massiwas followed by a breakfast served in the Carden City Hotel. There, friends gathered together and sat at the large round tables to enjoy the break- fast. To add an extra touch of pleasure, music stu- dents entertained. Perhaps to the dismay of some of the beautiful young ladies, but much to the approval of the handsome partners, they had the honor of the ence of the faculty for a short visit and an added of friendship was stirred as they went from table table receiving cheerful Hellos and respectful Good morningsn. The address of the guest speaker, lfather Leonard, was truly a memorable one. As the warmly-spoken words filled the room, his understood thoughts were received by the open minds of both the father and daughter whom he addressed. Although each father and daughter went off to- gether in different directions, that Sunday morning they all stood united in the Sacred Heart of jesus. 502 fl 40 395 x ind IU visit everyone. Having built itself up simultaneously with the building up of the entire school, the Spring Musical has graduated from the little hall up the block to the school auditorium, to an air filled with jeweled notes, to an ever-increasing audience overflowing with en- thusiasm for its success. Following the standard opening of the Sfar Spun- gled Banner, the curtain rose on a tiny bud bursting with musical beauty wrapped up in the simple strains of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean. As the petals Page fifty-eight uri ica unfolded, forming intricate beauty and delicacy of a blossom, so, too, unfolded the pages that hold the complex beauty of overtures and preludes. The Musi- cal starred the little first grader of the elementary school together with the accomplished pianist of the Academy. Perhaps the stars that twinkled brightest were the solo voice pieces that were the highlights of the Musical. To put a perfect ending to a wonderful event, the Glee Club burst into song, singing the heart-lifting tunes of days gone by. Through the combined efforts of many, came a most successful Spring Musical. It was to a single person particularly, whose patience and encourage- ment, whose smile and helping hand, whose prayers and immeasurable work, made the musical what it was, that the girls, with happy hearts and tearful eyes, could only say thanks. It was to Sister Mary Immacu- late that we owed our thanks. sggri if + .s r I WVQSQQK 'l diy dl .X4CClbJOH1y O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today . . . This is May Day , hardly recognizable perhaps by the general concept of May Day held by too large a number of our lay workingmen, who storm the SCLII of government or deride those who provide their means of livelihood with banal mouthings of their importance. This is May Day wherein humility is the keynote of us who observe it and praise the theme for the one in whose honor we sing. Contrast tl.e rabble of a city parade with the dig- nity of our procession. Our May Queen , chosen by the student body for her Mary-like qualities and robed in a bridal gown and veil was attended by her ladies- in-waiting as she proceeded from the Academy to the Seminary lawn. They were preceded by the cross bearer, the student body and the visiting clergy. Each lady-in-waiting, dressed in a gown of pastel shade, bore a bouquet of flowers, symbolic of Mary's virtues. These were placed at the feet of the statue as each recited her poetic tribute to Our Lady. if-.Q Page siaffy Mi After the recitation of the rosary, the May Queen placed a crown on the statue of Mary, Queen of angels and of men. The Queen, whose reign is not determined by royal blood nor edict, by human hom- age nor heritage, but by virtue of being the human Mother of Christ, the King, the Saviour of the world, is thus crowned. The ceremonies were presided over by Reverend Kathleen Powell .uldres-es Our Lady as Queen of May. Ire-, fe Kathleen Powell and her ladies-ine waiting: Anne Marie lierlarieh, lfi- lcen Powell, Ann Carson, Virginia Bendin, Catherine Mahon, Kathleen Petrano, M. Melfarthy, .Indy Con- nor, Rosemary Kerns, glean l,illy. The two flower girls were from the first grade of the Seminary. Father Aloysius Gillik, pastor of Our Lady of Loretto parish, who gave a most inspiring sermon. The sermon was followed by Benediction of the Most Blessed Saeramentg and then not by human promises of less work and more pay but by Divine promises of Eternal Life to all those who, in humility, labor for the Love of God and the sanctihcation of their souls. Brz'L'ify is the soul of wil. i me Zzzifvlera A builder builded a temple, He wrought: it with grace and skill, Pillars and groins and arches, All fashioned to work his will. Men said, as they saw its beauty, It shall never know decay. Great is thy skill, 0 Builder, Thy fame shall endure for aye. A teacher builded a temple With loving and infinite care, Planning each arch with patience, Laying each stone with prayer. None praised her unceasing effortsg None knew of her wondrous plan, For the temple the teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the builder's temple, Crumbled into the dustg Low lies each stately pillar, Food for consuming rust, But the temple the teacher builded Will last while the ages rollg For that beautiful, unseen temple Is a child's immortal soul. -S.M.I.
