Yet the fiddle and the accordion brought hope and comfort to many a wagon train, and their importance increased at the gatherings for cabin and barn raisings. When towns began to dot the Oregon valleys, travel- ing performers came with their magic tricks, their singing, their dancing, and their monologues. The first theatrical performance was given in 1846, and symphonic concerts by local orchestras were offered at least ninety years ago.
