With Skips, Discussions, and Reading Improving hir mind again, I ree! .righ Kathy Klein- holter and Brenda Bainbridge. ' A. Many people loved English, a few hated it, but all took it. A literature course was different from any other subject because it encouraged the imagination. Freshmen were away from the Tom and Ann and dog series and in a class were the people they learned about such as Miss Havishham and Uriah Heep existed outside of the classroom, in conversation and other books. Steinbeck, Faulkner and Julius Caesar were the much discussed people of the sophomore level, and symbolism, subject matter and theme the much discussed terms. juniors finally read Macbeth, Vanity Fair and U7iithering Heights, novels which many of them had started be- fore but not finished. Seniors tasted the epics Nie- beliingenlied and the Song of Roland. Perhaps the biggest gain was that they could now admit quite non- chanlantly that yes, they had read Crime and Panifh- ment.
