Dear Seniors, The beautiful month of june is fast approaching-june, the Bridal Month! the Commencement Month! the Month of the Sacred Heart! june has always been a most delightful word for you, because it spelt vacation. But this year, the connotation is much deeper, much more significant, and definitely much more delightful. Lowell says: What is so rare as a day in june? -and you agree with him, particularly when that rare day is Commencement. You have looked forward to it for so long. You have counted the years, then the months, and finally the days- now it is here. But suddenly it dawns upon you that Commencement has a twofold meaning-one, the termination of the old routineg the other, the beginning of a new one. For some reason or other, the first definition bothers you the more. The severing of-ties is not easy, and behind you lies a sea of memories-beautiful ones, heavenly ones. With these, it is true, are mingled some wrong turnings-the cruelties of forgetfulness, the things that seared you and the hearts you seared, the footprints ot those you hurt and who went away not knowing you were sorry. All these things are past, the memories only remain. lt is 'for you now to face the second definition of the word Commencement-the beginning of a new era. What shall I do,'! you ask yourself. Go to college? Which one? What then? Get married? Perhaps, or do I have a vocation to the Religious I.ife?'! Whatever the vocation, correspond valiantly with the gifts God gave you. Remember, womanshould always be the Queen of Beauty, Purity, and Truth in the tournament of this world's thought. Should God call you to the marriage state, then your reign begins in that most sacred of all spots-Home. If that be your realm, then your noble task will be to mold the men who will be the future citizens of your country, to form faithful souls for the Catholic Church, and to make great saints for Heaven. What a vocation! Fulfill it faithfully and generously. Be like the valiant woman in the Gospel- the price of her is as things brought from afar off and from the uttermost bounds of the earth. ' However, if God whispers, Come follow Me, be not less generous. Do as the retreat master said: Take your crucifix in your hand, look at the thorn-crowned Head, and ask yourself-'Does God want me to teach His little ones ?' Or look at the nail- pierced Hands, and ask Him if He wants you to serve Him in hospitals or administer to the minds of His poor. Glance down at His sacred Feet-maybe He is asking you to go into foreign lands. Perhaps for a few, the pierced Side might beckon you to the contemplative statef' The answer rests with you. In years to come peruse this letter again. See ifthe pattern of life you designed for yourself on Commencement Day is working out as you planned. Perhaps you will find that some correction' is needed. Make it, while there is yet time. Remember, some day you must present the finished product to your Father in Heaven. Good-bye now, my dear girls. Come back to see us. The doors of your Alma Mater are always open. Sometime in prayer think of your teachers and classmates of a bright, happy past! God love you! A Devotedly in Him, Sister Theodolinda Principal I
