As you look through the pages of the 1959 PIONEER, we hope that you will see not only a treasury of good times and happy memories, but also a series of events symbolizing progress—progress through education, through experience in self government, through participation in campus activities, through belonging to student organizations, through the develop¬ ment of sportsmanship, and through the realization of an important goal— graduation. We have chosen for the theme of this year ' s PIONEER th e school ' s motto, Forward. We feel that this, more than anything else, symbolizes the spirit of SJC. Through the years, the Junior College has represented to the people of this area a means of attaining higher education at a rel¬ atively low cost, a stepping stone to better private and community life. The symbol of the covered wagon which appears on the opening pages of this book reflects the historical aspects of the school ' s motto. For over ten years Loy C. Laney has served in the journalism department of SJC. As coordinator of pub¬ lications, he has the task of printingniunerous programs, brochures, and annoimcements in addition to the weekly campus newspaper and, in recent years, the school ' s annual. He teaches journalism and English and is known for his understanding and humor in dealing with his students ' problems. This year ne added the duties of yeaihook adviser to his many other responsibilities. The staff of the 1959 PIONEER is grateful to Mr. Laney for his advice on technical problems, his encouragement to do our best, and his patience with our shortcomings. It is to him that we dedicate this yearbook.
