" The United Nations " was the theme of the eighteenth Art Ball, presented by the Art Students ' League on the evening of Novem¬ ber 19, 1943. Against the background of a huge head of the Statue of Liberty there unfolded as the highlight of the evening a pageant depicting the common man ' s struggle for freedom, the defeat of the forces of tyranny, and the triumphant spirit of the free peoples of America, China, Britain, and Russia. The Ball combined spectacular theatrical effects, delightful satirical com¬ edy, and masterly solo and ballet dances with an especially timely message of hope for the better world of tomorrow which is being built by the pioneers of today. Right: Richard Mier in the solo dance number " John Freedom Strikes Off His Chains. " ART HALL-1943
