Following his graduation from Oklahoma State University in May 1969, he entered the Navy as an Aviation Officer Candidate and was commissioned as an Ensign on 24 October 1969. Captain Roe completed flight training as a Distinguished Naval Aviator and received a regular appointment on 04 December 1970. In September 1971, after completing Fleet Replacement Training, Captain Roe reported to Attack Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN. which was deployed aboard USS ENTERPRISE QCVN-65l flying the A-7E Corsair ll and conducting combat operations in Vietnam. He completed two combat deployments with VA-27, flew 147 combat sorties and partic- ipated in Linebacker ll operations over North Vietnam, resulting in the release of American POW's from Hanoi. In September 1974, Captain Roe reported to Attack Squadron ONE-TWENTY-TWO as a Flight Instructor and Training Landing Signal Officer in the Corsair ll. In October 1976, he transferred to Carrier Air Wing FOURTEEN embarked on USS ENTERPRISE as the Attack Staff Landing Signal Officer. Completing two Westem Pacific deployments with CAG-14 and USS ENTERPRISE. he detached in October 1979 and reported to Recruiting Command as the Officers Programs Officer at Lubbock, Texas. In January 1982, he once again reported to VA-122 for replacement training enroute to Attack Squadron NINETY-THREE flying the A- 7E aboard USS MIDWAY QCV-411, forward deployed and homeporled in Yokosuka. Japan. Captain Roe served as Safety, Maintenance and Operations Officer of VA-93. ' - Following a short tour as Officer in Charge of Naval Manpower Engineering Center, Pensacola. Florida, Captain Roe retumed to VA-122 in August 1986 enroute to Attack Squadron NINETY-FOUR as Executive Officer and again flying the A-7E abroad the USS ENTERPRISE. The squadron deployed to WESTPAC and participated in Operation Preying Mantis against the Iranian Maritime Forces in April 1988. He assumed command of VA-94 in September 1988, completed a world cruise with the ENTERPRISE, and received the Light Air Attack Battle 'E' Award for 1989. In June 1990, he reported to the Pentagon on the staff of the Assistant Chief of Naval Operations for Air Warfare iOP5502I. Captain Roe assumed command of USS SACRAMENTO QAOE-0 on 30 April 1992. Captain Roe has accumulated more than 4400 total flight hours, including over 3600 in the Corsair ll. He has flown 19 different models of Naval aircraft and accumulated over 1100 carrier arrested landings on seven aircraft carriers, with over 700 on the USS ENTERPRISE. His personal awards include the Distin- guished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal l2I. Strike Flight Air Medal 1131, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat 'V' 143, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign and senrice medals. Captain Roe is married to the former Elora Jo Wolfe of West Monroe, Louisiana. They reside at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington.
