THE SACRAMENTO STORY The SACRAMENTO has been borne by warships of the United States since 1865, when the first USS SACRAMENTO, a steam propelled, wooden, sloop-ofwar, was com- missioned. ' The second ship, a Gun Boat, USS SAC- RAMENTO KPG-191, commissioned in 1914, sailed in many foreign waters and visited so many foreign ports it is unlikely her record will be equaled again. Her long and distin- guished record includes patrols and port of calls in Central America, the Caribbean, New England Coast, Gibraltar, Barbary Coast, Italy, British Isles, Northern Russia, Norway, France, Suez Canal, Bombay, Co- lombo, Singapore, Philippine Islands, Chi- na, Japan, Siberia, California Coast, seven years of operations from Shanghai with the Asiatic Fleet, and training of the Naval Res- ervists on the Great Lakes. 4 Although this third SACRAMENTO has two 50,000 horsepower steam enggines fo drive her 797 foot length at high spf-eds and modern equipment to do the job, it is the 29 officers and over 540 men who make it nap. pen.
