Captain TOMION entered the Navy in July 1955 and was commissioned the following November. ln January 1956, he reported aboard the cruiser USS NORTHHAMPTON QCLC-11, in Norfolk Virginia. Upon completion of this initial sea tour he was detailed to the Navy Section, MAAG, in Saigon, Vietnam, for duty as Assistant Liason Officer at Vietnamese Naval Headquarters. ln July 1960, Captain TOMION returned to Norfolk, as Operations Officer aboard the destroyer, USS LEARY QDDR-8791. During the spring of 1962 he was transferred to Washington D.C. and assigned responsibilities as Desk Officer in the Western PacificlSouth Asian Branch of the Political Military Policy Division in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations. In November 1963 following his Washington assignment, he was again detailed overseas, on this occasion to the staff of Commander, Middle East Force, as Aide and Flag Lieutenant. Thereafter, he reported aboard the cruiser, USS CHICAGO QCG-111, in San Diego California, where he served as Combat information Officer from March 1965 through October 1967. ln November 1967, Captain TOMION reported as Executive Officer to the destroyer, USS RUPERTUS QDD-8511 in Long Beach California. In April 1969, he was again sent to Washington, where he served as Executive Assistant to the Vice Director of the Joint Staff in the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Captain TOMION went to Japan in February 1972 where he assumed command of the destroyer USS BAUSELL fDD-8451, in Yokosuka. From August 1973 through June 1974 he attended the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island. From August 1974 until July 1978 he served in the Plans and Policy Directorate of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and as Executive Assistant and Senior Aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations in Washington D.C. From August 1978 until June 1980 he served as Commanding Officer of the USS SACRAMENTO QAOE-11, in Bremerton Washington.
