CAPTAIN R. C. COFFEY Captain COFFEY joined the Navy in October of 1957 and was designated a Naval Aviator one year later. His first tour of duty was with Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 12 at Quonset Point Rhode Island, flying AD-5 aircraft. Subsuquent tours of duty included instructor duty at NAS Meridian Mississippi, and catapult officer aboard the carrier USS RANDOLPH. ln 1966 Captain COFFEY reported to VA-56 deployed on the USS ENTERPRISE. The following year was spent at the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island. After a brief tour of duty on the COMLATWINGPAC Staff Captain COFFEY became Executive Officer of VA-97 in July 1972. On December 15, 1972 he assumed command of VA-97 aboard the USS ENTERPRISE. ln May 1974 he became Air Operations Officer on the ENTERPRISE. Captain COFFEY assumed command of Carrier Air Wing 19 on November 28, 1975. ln June 1977 Captain COFFEY reported to Commander Light Attack Wing Pacific as Operations Officer. The following year was spent as Executive Officer NAS Lemoore CA. In October 1979, he commenced a series of schools including Senior Officers Ship Material Readiness Course, and Surface Warfare Officers School, in preparation for taking command of the USS SACRAMENTO fAOE-11. On June 24, 1980 Captain Coffey Took command of SACRAMENTO in a ceremony conducted while underway in the Arabian Sea. -. -vsaf, .
