PREFACE On May 15, 1978 the USS SACRAMENTO returned home' to Bremerton, Washington after seven months of operations with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. This was the completion of two years of hard work by both crew and ship. lt all began with a year in overhaul in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyards, Bremerton, Wash. SACRAMENTO's engineering spaces were overhauled for the first time since her commissioning in 1964. Also two underway replenishment stations were removed, and the NATO Seasparrow missile launcher was installed in place of the forward gun mount. Then began the arduous testing, retesting, training and practicing of both ship and crew until both worked together as one toward their comman goal, underway replenishment. On October 25, 1978, after a brief onload of ammo at Bangor, Wash., SACRAMENTO set sail for WESTPAC. Q While overseas SACRAMENTO completed 222 underway replenishments, traveling well over 33,000 nautical miles while participating in seven major operations with task group 77.5. The cruise was accented by port visits to Yokosuka and'Kagoshima, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Pattaya, Thailand. SACRAMENTO was the first ship to visit the Japanese resort city of Kagoshima in over seven years. During our stay there Captain Stein and several crewmen visited three orphanages bearing gifts of Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys. Capt. Stein told the children of Thanksgiving in America and later voices were raised in tune as children and sailors sang Christmas songs. - During her deployment SACRAMENTO operated out of Subic Bay, Philippines. In the Philippines, SACRAMENTO crewmen gave S800 of their own money to help the children of Dinalupihan, a small village ou tside of the U.S. Naval Base. The money was used to purchase tools and paint to repair the community school. Successive trips were made by crewmembers to donate food to the school and to complete work being done on the schools gymnasium. WESTPAC 77-78 and the yard period before were a great experience for all involved. The staff of this eleventh cruisebook hope that we have captured some of the memories of that period. -
