Captain N.F. Stein graduated from the Naval Academy in 1952, and was awarded a masters degree in International Relations by the American University in 1970. Capt. Stein reported for duty on USS CALVERT QAPA-32l in June of 1952. Eighteen months later, he was ordered to Submarine School. Thereafter, he served in USS QUILLBACK QSS-424l, USS CHIVO iSS-3411, USS MEDREGAL iSS-480l, as Executive Officer on USS BLACKFIN lSS-3221, and as Commanding Officer of USS SEAFOX iSS-402l. Capt. Stein has served as an instructor at Submarine School and two tours of duty in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations: one in the Submarine Warfare Division and the other in the Undersea Warfare Division of the Office of Naval Intelligence for which he received a Legion of Merit Award. ln 1971 he graduated from the Army War College, and was subsequently assigned duties as Commander, Submarine Division Thirty-One in San Diego, California. In July of 1972 Captain Stein was assigned to duty in the office of Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Installations and Logistics where he spent a year as Special Assistant and three years as Executive Assistant and Senior Naval Aide for which he was awarded his second Legion of Merit. ln July of 1976 Capt.
