As Freshmen a peppier class was never known. The one big event of the year was a party at the home of Fred Stanzcl. The party was certainly a big success even if Mr. Lake did find himself in the middle of lhe road fafteir midnightb without any gas in the Ford. When this class entered Senior High as Sophomores they started with full speed. Fred Stanzel was elected President, which office, he filled very efficiently. This year the Sophomores became a main feature in the High School. They were excelled by none when it came to programs, base-ball, debates, and declam. Never has a better record been made by a class than that of the class of 1923. . In the sixth grade two classes were united so that both would graduate in the spring instead of one class graduating in the spring and one in the fall. f Then in the fall of 1917 we entered Junior High School. At first we were rather awed by the superiority of the Freshmen but we soon overcame this temerity. The eighth grade was a very well behaved class, at least we thought we were at the time. The year passed quickly and unevent- fully. As Freshmen we organized as a class for the first time. We took full advantage of the organization, even tho the class was large and we had little opportunity for social functions. The big entertain- ments of the year were a Halloween party, a sleighing party, and a picnic. This year we are Sophomores. There are about fifty-six mem- bers in our class, and we surely have made a record for our first year in Senior High School. Several of our members distinguished themslves in football and basketball. This year we are represented on the Philo Phono- graph staff and also on the interclass debating team, and in addition to this we had representatives in the home, and sub-districts declam- atory contests, and also members in the Glee Club. We carried off honors in the extemporaneous speaking contest. Two never-to-be-forgotten parties were held, one given by the officers, at Clara Smeeton's home and the other at the gym. It will be two years before the graduation of the class of '23 and in that time we will prove undisputedly that the class of '23 is the best that has ever finished at S. C. H. QkGZ sf Resume ofthe Football Season A definite system of organization is essential if a school is to he successful in atheletics. A.t.heletics are successful too, if there is a good spirit of clean play, sacrifice and willingness to work on the part of the men particip-ating. The winning of contests is of secondary importance, although from the stand- point of the average fan, the success of teams is estimated by the number of games won. After a lapse of five years duration, football was again instituted in the Sac City High School as a major sport. It was uinforbunate that twhe game had oven drop- ped for that length of time, for the coach was confronted with the gigantic task of teaching this entire squad the base fiundanientals of the game. The squad was en- tirely ignorant of all phases of the game for only a few had ever seen a game. As soon as a sufficient number came out, arrangements for a schedule was started. Lake City High came here for the opening game. Tihey represented an ex- perienced, heavy aggregation and put their game on ice in the iirst quarter by scor- ing twenty points. Sac City held them scoreless until the last few miutes of play, when our opponents scored another touchdown. Rockwell City and Ida Grove won their games in the first quarter too, al- though in the latter game Sac came back strong and by straight line plunges for eighty yards, scored a touchdown. - The powerful Jefferson Carroll and LeMars teams, by viirtue of their exper- ience, weight and speed were able to score throug-hout the entire games. The Sac Indians were right for the Alta game and non IS to 7. This game gave the team new life and a greater determination for their remaining games. Coach DeCook and his squad worked overtime in a final effort to subdue the Odebolt team. The latter team had not bee11 defeated or even scored upon during the season. T'heir weight, experience and record was a factor not to be overlooked. NVith fight and determination, the light and inexperienced Sac team, literally tore into their opponents. Odebold scored first but Slac came black strong and fought their way to a seven to seven tie. With only three minutes left. to play Oidebolt scored a drop- kick thereby winning the game. This game was a fitting close to our season for ouur tcaim was at its best and as one of the local papers said it clearly vindicated the coacihing system as inaugu- rated this year. The outstianding feature of the season was the splendid physical condition of the entire squad. Not a man was taken from a single game due to injuries or poor physical condition. 'Ilhis fact is of still greater importance when one realizes the punishment tihat the team received in nearly all of their gamesg a long hard eight game schedule and that ever present fight spirit, for the team never gave up, in spite of overwhelming odds. Sac City is losing a good guard in Cecile. Clara Smeeton Stub I This was Clara's first year in B. B. and tho the smallest girl on the team, she can surely shoot the baskets. A queer thing about Clara is that the stronger her guard is the more baskets she makes. Catherine Coibh Cass Cass is a Junior and this was her second year of playing. She was an excellent guard and hard player. Whenever the ball came within her territory she got it and was quite sure of a safe throw to the center. Catherine will be with us next year and will be one of our dependable guards. livrnaulino Prawl HB Bernadine was the substitute for guard on our first team and certainly filled her place well, as this is B's first year, and a sopho- more, we are sure of a strong guard on the first team next season. ilfllizalbeth Cooper f'Lib Has two more years for Sac City B. C1 H S. Basketball Season 19 10-Q1 In tihe game with Churdan at the Morningside college High School Basket- ball tournament, the Sac City Indians ended one of the most successful of basket- ball seasons. The season was not so successful in the number of games won but the experience gained by the men who next year must make up the fast team we expect, is invaluable. It was a successful season also because of the great development imade in Uhe game: tihe Sac City High School has not had a chance to compete much in this sport up to this year beoause of lack of a place to play but this year tho team made a good competition for some of the best! fives in northwestern Iowa. Coach DeCook has done remarkably well in rounding into shape tihe men who had never played basketball before and by the end of the season had several of these men play- ing on his first team. Loren Arney, who filled the position of forward during the wihole season, was considered the best all-around man. He was a hard player and was in the game every minulte. He was not quitie so sure of the basket as Ingram but was dependable tlhis year and his position will be hard to fill. Marvin Green was tihe old stand-by at standing guard and you could be pretty sure that no one would shoot a biasket over him. He was a fast, consistent player and had a great amount of clever floor work at his command. Marvin also graduates this year and will leave another large hole to fill. Ferd Hansen was an excellent standing guard and was the very man to fill Green's position when ihe was out of tihe. game. Ferd was a hard player and a de- pendable man. in the game at all times, He graduates this year Wayne Basler, another Senior who will graduate this year, held the position of running guard, and a better one will be hard to find next year. He was a good heady, consistent player and was well on to getting ringers. William Watt-rson played the position of center until illness prevented him from playing in several of the games and John Stadlman took his place, Bill was a good jumper and played his position well. He was a good long-shot man and de- pendable floor man. He will be with us again next year and will be a valuable man on the squad. John Stadlman, lengthy center, is just starting ,no learn basketball, but he aleady knows enouguh about it to be considered one of the most necessary men on the team. He is a good basket shooter and'with his length will be able to out-julmp the majority ol centers. Harry Grallulll, utility forward- although he did not have much chance to show his ability, is a comer, and will make a valuable addition to the squad next year. Toto Ingram found his position as forward for he was there with the baskets. A hard player showing true B. B. he'll be an outstanding man next year. This department is one of the most useful in the school since its aim is to prepare the students for work in the rural schools. There have been about one hundred graduates from this de- partment since it has been instituted. In the year of 1919 it was organized into the High School Normal Training Society. It is the plan of the society to have an annual meeting of all the graduates of this department, at which time special talks are given, which will help them in the work of teaching. The night before school began a bunch of we Senior boys came up to the school house and put our colors up on the flag pole. The other classes had quite a time getting them down the other dav. That and the advent of two new teachers was about all the ex- citement for awhile. Mr. DeCook, the new athletic coach, is pretty jazzy and all the women have their lamps on him. We ought to have pretty good athletics this year with the new gym and a peppy coach. Our other new teacher is the French and Latin teacher and I've about decided to take French 'cause I like her looks pretty well. The Philo Staff was elected the other day. George Prawl was elected Editor-in-Chief again with Ruthe Martin Assistant Editor and Loren Arney business manager. You know we changed the Philo Phonograph from a magazine to a newspaper form. N.. Taxa. N. A r It was also decided to form a Student Council this year to be composed of two members from each class. We hope they take good care of us. ' The other day the Seniors buried their old class colors and hung up the new ones-Scarlet and Black. The funeral was quite sad especially the sermon by Rev. Grotland. The next week the Juniors had trial, bringing suit against the Seniors for misusing public property by burying their last year's colors in the school grounds. It was quite exciting but the judge was incompetent. Well, I've got to quit now and go to class so goodbye, SKINNY P. S. DeCook gave us a talk today and wants to organize a jazz band. I. might play thc comb. W. G. B. Pitt I J w4 e xW 'www Z OCTOBER vvvvvvxfvvvvvvvvsf Snacks from Genevieve Swanson's diary, fUnprintable parts omittedj I. I nearly got killed tonite after school when crossing the campus. Before I knew what was happening something came down on me and after I had run out of danger I looked around and found it was only the football men chasing up and down the field. 2. The Hrst football game of the season was tonite with Lake City. We lost 27-0 but nevertheless it was a good game. After the game the Seniors had the swellest picnic out by Ferd's. We had as per usual a good time ------ 5. The Juniors frolicked out to the pasture to have a picnic tonight. They seemed to enjoy themselves. 8. We went over to Rockwell to the game and had lots of fun. The boys are improving even if we did get beat. 12. Edwin Burgh gave us a concert today. He imitated birds, farm animals, etc. His object was to interest school students in the better type of music, especially the violin. 11.-18. Exams. The old teachers are just as bad as ever and the new ones worse. It's queer we didn't pass after the way we studied. 23. We were widows Saturday cause all the football men went to LeMars. They were out of their class entirely so were beaten somewhat C35 26. We had an awfully wild pep meeting today. Iver said he had lost his views and Donald's feet wouldn't go the same direction. The inter-class girls' basket-ball tournament started today. Seniors 15-Sophomores 14. 28. We had a big parade to prepare for the game with Alta and we beat them too. Arney made three touchdowns. Some game I'd say. 30. The Sophomore officers are awfully kind to them. They had a party for them out at Clara's. And they dressed all up too like ghosts and things. . I don't expect any this Christmas although I have been awfully good this year and have only whispered once. That was to ask Ev if he went to the home Declamatory contest the nite before. He didn't so I had to tell him that Carolyn Kearns got first, Be-ulah Wilson second and Fred Stanzel third. Otherwise I've been good. I listened attentively to the Debate tryouts and fully agreed with the judges that Ruth Martin, Genevieve Swanson, and Miriam Brownell should be placed on the team. And the day of the Hobo convention, I was very quiet, only assisting in the band and when the terrible accident befell Brother Stadlman it was I who res- cued his left lung. The next day when the Sophomores gave their program which was composed of the farce, The Spinsters' Conven- tion I was very much interested never letting my mind wander from the subject in hand. Clnsertz Dear Santy, We think you had ought to know that what made him so quiet was that he was watching the effect the farce had on the Junior girlsj And when it began to snow I didn't throw any snow balls at the girls like all the other boys did and got into a fight with one boy for throwing snow balls. The day that we celebrated the Anniversary of the Landing of the Pilgrims I sang patriotic songs with great fervor and even listened to the victrola play the old favorites with seemingly great interest. Altogether I have been a very good boy for abo-ut a month now and am looking forward to Xmas with happy thoughts because I know Santy couldn't forget a good boy.--Melvin Early. P. S. George P. Sl X FOUI' fl- l ipt f w ff ' sw ln '4 We Beg Your Pardon it is proper Politeness is largely il matter of geogra- phy. In Paris, they've just passed an or- dinance which requires a man in a street car to get up and give his seat to a woman. And if all the French women look like the pictures in the Sunday SLIDDLIQIIIGIHS, it won't be a difficult law to enforce. In this country on t-he other hand, po- liteness requires n man to cover his eyes with a newspaper, as soon as all the seats in the car are filled. The only way a woman can secure French treatment in an American car is by stepping on the man's feet. Politeness in this country is chiefly prac- ticed on unmarried women. A man will take off this hat when riding in an eleva- tor with his stcnographer, but not when riding with his lawful wedded wife. He probably figures that she has seen him with his hat off so often that it would mean nothing to her, At dinner parties, politeness consists in talking first to the woman on your right, and then to the woman on your left. It also consists in saying all ilhings to a pretty one, and all the con- the snappy ventionnl tihings to a homely lf both women are homely, well to say nothing. And if are pretty, you won't have enhance to talk, anyhow. In some parts of the world, one. it is just as both women much of a to rub noses. That sort of thing is never likely to be taken up here, however, ow- ing to the damage to make-up. Two women could devote an hour to removing the shine on their noses and putting the bloom on their clheeks, and then have all their work ruined by one polite little rub. Kissing is different. It's a form of po- liteness which two women can accom- plish without disturbing their veils, and without interfering with their make--up and without meaning its Gwendolyn Basler-- Gee, I found a dent on my head-something must have hit me. Have they lost their resiliency and pep? Do they they need retreading, trimming, patching, or a general over-hauling? Or are they too for gone to be worth saving. There you are! Step up and be measured for a set today! No home should be without them! Sixty hairs to a lid! Guaranteed not to fade, tear, shrink, ltr come off in the wind and rain! Look for the label on each and every hair! Ask the woman who owns one! Will you take them with you or have them sent? With false hair, false lips, false teeth, and false eyelashes a girl necessarily becomes a game of chance. It might be the better part of valor to look over the Julie brides this season very carefully. Fools rush in where angels fear to wed. A parent who has had difficulty marrying off the daughter can now hails her done over according to any plans and specifications a. prospective husband may submit. I'd like her better if she had red hair afnd a bit more of it about the ears, a suitor may complain to papa. I'll have her 'hair made any color and length you wish, papa can now re- ply. And her eyelashes I noticed them yesterday are very thin, Harold may argue. Yes, the wise parent will admit, She stood too close to the flame of an oil heater when very young, but if you will state the length and color of eyelash you like l will see that she is equipped with them. And her nose, Harold may insist, is too retrousse. I prefer the aquilinef' Certainly! papa! will agree, Nosvs are very easily remodeled to suit these days. lt shall bo attended to. And so on. A bride may not be all that she seems, but she can be made to seem so. The new eyelashes are already in great demand. They are made to adhere to the lid and should be applied before and after vamping. As a glance at some of our Beau Brummels will show, young men are evi- dently using the artificial eyelashes on their upper lips this spring. One of the most important habits any of us can have is the habit of saving. Do you want to be rich? Do you want to feel free from worry when your active years are over? It dosen't matter so much what work you do if you do it well. It doesn't make so much differ- ence how much you earn if you save a portion of it regularly. Start the habit-nowwand let the appearance of the next school annual mark a year of saving for you. We will gladly help you. THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK Sac City, Iowa 1 t From Our Point of View Annuals are a detriment to the welfare, peace and happiness of society. They cause worry, loss of sleep, indigestion, hard feelings, cuss words, insanity, headaches, low grades, crime, enemies intemper- ance fdrive the staff to drinkj, crabbiness, loss of beauty, thinness, and turn the staff into villains, persons who have hitherto been sweet amiable and likeable, after serving on the stafl' have become morose, sullen and show indications of insanity. Witness Opal Lowry and Donald Graham of the staff. And the result of the publication of an annual-everlasting and undying enmity of your best friends, crit- icism from the Faculty, and ridicule from the readers. So we be- lieve that we have shown that an Annual for the welfare for the best interests of society should not be published more than once by any class. Money is hard to get, you can ask for money, you can beg for money, you can steal money, you can demand money, you can coax for money, you can borrow money but in the end all the spot cash you'll be able to scrape together will scarcely .pay the cost of advertising- and still they say it pays to advertise. So we sayt' money is tight and hard to get . Sleep is soulful, beautifying, wonderful, it is something' you like to do at night, but circumstances alter cases and so you drift into sleep in class rooms or halls. Sleep to the Annual Board is like an oasis in a desert-it sounds well but it doesn't mean anything. Count your many blessings and think of sleep that is our heart's desire. Pictures are very untruthful, some pictures flatterwothers do not, so if you don't like your picture-just remember it doesn't look like you. To the Staff of all future Annuals we extend Greetings and say in all sincerity, you don't know what you're coming to. S UPER SAC STAFF.
