The Bluejay Published by the Journalism Five Class of Sabetha High School In the Year of Our Lord, NINETEEN HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-THREE IN THE FAIR CITY OF SABETHA, KANSAS TABLE OF CONTENTS: Faculty Page seven Classes Page eleven Organizations Page seventeen Activities Page thirty-three Seniors Page eighty-five Advertising Page one hundred and three Great appreciation is extended to Lori Rokey, the contributing artist of our cover. E. A. —Those initials have graced the many different pages of this produc- tion at some time or another. Who do they stand for? They stand for the one re- sponsible for seeing that we, the annual staff, completed the task we set out to do in September. It was she who held us together when we wondered whether or not it was worth it; and from her experience, we benefited greatly—Mrs. Elizabeth Ahrens, journalist, teacher oi the class, without whom you would not be reading this page or holding an annual right now. It was hers and our purpose in this endeavor to produce an annual that would be remembered by all in the years to come; and that it be of such quality to be enjoyed by all. We, the journalism class and annual staff of 1973, dedicate this publication to her for the assistance and excellent guidance in these hours of our labors. You have the distinction of being the first class to graduate from Sabetha High School after having had all of your high school training in the new Sabetha Senior High School. You are to be congratulated. Society is changing rapidly. Education is one of the intangibles that can be measured only after the product has had time to be established. This means that the class of 1973, individually and collectively, will make their mark, but only on tomorrow's society. It would be my hope that those of us responsible for your education have made things flexible enough that each of you locate your place in life and have happiness as you achieve your goal. Your success will be determined by you. Best Wishes J.A. Cleavinger Superintendent To the Students and Annual Staff- It is my belief that one of the best times of your lives in now. Opportunity is abundant. Change is ap- pearing everywhere. Much of it is good. Be discerning in your selection of what is best for you. Be an active participant in whatever you believe. Success in life should be measured in happiness and fulfillment through achievement. The greatest gift the school and home can bestow upon you is a positive and healthy conscience. A positive conscience will help you achieve life's goals. I commend our senior class this year for their contri- butions to school in attitude and leadership. I hope that they will leave Sabetha High School with many fond memories. I wish each of you a successful and satisfying year. Sincerely, Irwin L. We have written to Dr. Kenneth McFarland, a nationally known speaker from Topeka. If he ac- cepts, we will open the assembly to the public and may ask some neighboring schools' National Honor Chapters to come. We plan to give a scholarship (un- known amount) to some senior who plans to go to col- lege. Also, it is possible that we will organize an aca- demic banquet to be held this spring. Our money- raising projects are working in the concession stand at games and possibly having a bake sale in the spring. NHS Officers NHS Sponsor Mr. Fischer 20 Kayettes The Kayettes have been busy this year in the school, community, national, and world levels of the Kayette program. For school service we had a bleacher clean-up, did various things to welcome the students, and did numerous services for the teachers. We also were in charge of the Christmas Dance. On the Community level we tutored grade school children, went caroling, and made favors for the hospital and rest homes. We held a cake drawing for CARE and also a voting promotion campaign. Kayettes also sponsored a carnival and a walk athon for cerebral palsy and meals for million. We financed our activities with two successful bake sales. Kayettes closed the year with the Annual Mother-Daughter Ban- quet and Installation. 21 Kayette Board Key Club Key Club Officers The Sabetha Key Club is a busy service organiza- tion. They cut down and fixed our Christmas tree. They picked up cans and trash on Main Street, and helped the Kiwanis Club with the pancake feed at the armory. These boys keep the front bulletin board at the school up to date, and they went to the State Conference at Topeka. 22 FHA FHA Officers FHA started out the school year with the kidnap breakfast. During the year they sponsored the Christ- mas assembly, a dance, Daddy-Daughter Date night and a covered dish supper. They also attended the Dis trict meeting and state meeting. Some of the money making projects they sponsored were selling plaques, bake sales, and a car wash. The year was ended with the installation and awards night. 23 FFA The Sabetha livestock judging team placed fourth out of 51 teams, at the state fair in Hutchinson. The team consisted of Bill Priest, Galen Ackerman, Mark Brownlee, and Tim Hartter. The Dairy Products team consisting of Steve Kes- ler, Tim Hartter, Alan Nickelson, and Ross Mont- gomery took first place in the Northeast District. We recognized FBLA week and had a picnic at the end of the year to honor the seniors in the chapter and to re- cruit new members. This year for the annual FBLA skip day we went to St. Joseph instead of the usual trip to Topeka. Our three years in this school have meant a lot to us. The educational process was only part of our schooling. We gained insight in dealing with other people and our- selves. Most instrumental in this development were the faculty and others in positions of authority. Second to them must come the underclassmen. We feel that due to our having come into contact with you, we are better prepared to face our futures. Thank you. 120
