A parade was held for the first time in several years, as part of a spirit crusade. Every organization and class participated in some way. Included were floats, the S.H.S. band, cars for each candidate, and the pep club. All Converged on the bank comer to hold a pep rally. Spirit increased as everyone anticipated playing the first Homecoming game on our new field. Spirit reached a climax when the Jays arose victo- rious. At the halftime ceremony, Miss Bobbie Pullins, escorted by Fred Showman, was crowned queen. At- tendants were Miss Yvonne Grimm, escorted by Randy Rostetter, and Miss Jody Mock, escorted by Mike McKim. The Queen presided over the second half of the game and the dance held afterward. 26 27 Halloween Queen 28 HALLOWEEN Every year, Sabetha students select a senior girl to represent the community in the Hallo- ween pageant at Hiawatha. Miss Janet Meyer was this year's candidate. Also from Sabetha High School, was Miss Gloria Grimm, repre- senting Morrill. The girls participated in a pageant in which they were judged on person- ality, beauty, poise, and intelligence. For the first time in many years, the candidate from Sabetha was chosen to be Queen. Miss Meyer was escorted to her throne by Governor Robert Docking. A week later, the Halloween Parade was held over which Miss Meyer reigned. The S.H.S. band was invited to attend in honor of the Queen. Miss Morrill — Gloria Grimm Veteran's Day Observance The seniors, with the help of Mr. Eugene McClain, held the first Veteran's Day Program in Sabetha. The program included speeches by Richard Wiltz, Colonel William Lo- belle of the Marines, and Senator James Pearson. Colors were posted by members of the V.F.W . and American Legion, also who were members of the National Guard. The Sabetha Band and Chorus presented several numbers. Seated on the speakers' platform were several distinguished guests. The program received T.V. coverage from WIBW and KTSB of Topeka. The program was well received, and the seniors feel that for all their efforts, it was a program to be most proud of. 30 Junior Play The Mouse That Roared On November 19 and 20, the junior class presented THE MOUSE THAT ROARED at the City Hall auditorium. The play is a two- act comedy in which Grand Fenwick, a country measuring three miles by five miles, invades the United States with bows and arrows. They accomplish defeat by abducting a newly invented super-bomb. The cur- tain fell on the promise of world peace. A few days before the performance it was found that the leading man would be unable to perform. It appeared as if the play would have to be cancelled. However, Kevin Ragan took on the role and saved the show. 31 Christmas Dance 32 Under The Christmas Tree The yearly holiday dance was held on the nine- teenth of December. It was sponsored by the Key- ettes who announced the theme as Under the Christmas Tree. The commons area was beauti- fully decorated for the night, but the 15-foot high Christmas tree brought in by the Key Club took the decorating laurels. We danced to the sounds of The Factory. Midway through the evening, the coronation was held and Susie Stone, escorted by Kurt Saylor, reigned over the remainder of the evening. Attend- ing the queen were Brenda McKim, escorted by Phil Bingman; Melinda Snyder, escorted by Greg Wen- ger; Nancy Cook, escorted by Ted Remmers, and Denise Hartter, escorted by Roger Brown. Terri Pullins was also nominated but was unable to attend. The Kayettes worked hard, and despite the sponsors having a somewhat reduced hearing capacity, everyone enjoyed the dance. 33 Valentine's Dance 35 MIKE ALTHOUSE DON ROKEY HOPE WILLIAMS ANN KREBS JENNIFER EMERT JERRY VAN VICKLE The perfect break in a long winter was provided by the Valentine’s Dance on the sixth of February. The theme was Memories of Love, and music was pro- vided by the Backwood Memory. Sponsored By FHA — FFA 36 .S - ?rorn in Zodiac c Prom was held on May 1, 1971. Decorations carried out the theme of the zodiac with paintings of each sign. A delicious meal was served, after which the sophomore servers presented a dance interpretation of Aquarius. The team racked up an 8-1 win- loss record by trouncing almost every one of their op- ponents. Their only loss was to Effingham in the final game of the year. Even though the Tigers ruined an undefeated season for the Jays and crushed all hopes of making it to the State playoffs, the Bluejay's record was a good one and one to be proud of in years to come. This years co-captains were the four guys pictured ABOVE. They played a big part in holding the team together and leading them to such a great season. Student Council was a very active sector of school life in the year 1970-71 as they worked for better relations between stu- dents, administration, and area schools. To kick off Home- coming and maybe a new tradition, StuCo sponsored a Home- coming parade. Throughout the year they managed the con- cession stand, held several sock hops, sponsored the school paper, posted events on the school sign, and sold Blue jay li- cense tags. In addition to these standing activities, several large projects were undertaken. They were a big boost to the establishment of a community teen center. . . a more liberal dress code was effected. . . a study lounge planned for next term . . .the problem of unruly segments in assembly audiences was solved by the use of a study hall for those who preferred not to attend assemblies. . . a Speak Out! session was held between StuCo delegates and the student body. . . and two inter-school student exchanges were held.........All this- through the efforts of Student Council 1971!!! In community service they sponsored two com- munity dances; helped with the bloodmobile and a pancake feed; shoveled coal for the Albany Mu- seum; and picked up beer cans along Sabetha streets. In service to the school, they painted the poles in the parking lot and the gates along the highway; helped line the football field; entered a float in the Homecoming parade; put up the Christmas tree; held the Easter assembly and helped with a pep assembly. They highlighted the year by attending the Key con- vention in Wichita. OFFICERS: (STANDING); Kim, Treas. ; Drex, V. First they assist- ed with the Junior play. Later, speech clinics at Lawrence, Ks. and Tarkio, Mo. were attended. Five speech festivals were graced with contestants from Sabetha (including state festival- Jody Janet in duet act and Pam Shutt with prose interp. ) Programs were presented for several ladies groups in the area, and two WINNIE THE POOH plays presented for the younger set. A major interest was a drama workshop field backstage of Tarkio's Mule-Barn Theater. The day revealed many of the technicalities involved in the presentation of SUMMERTREE and was topped by the evening performance of the play. The year was gracefully ended by initiation of a new group of Troupe 1065 members. ASCENDING: Mrs. Hayes, Sponsor; Anne, Presi- dent; Gloria, V. Pres. ; Janet, Secretary; Fred, Treasurer; Joe, Clerk. B.E.C.K. is an or- g animation new to Sabetha High this term. Its initials stand for Business Education Clubs of Kansas and its mem- bership comes from those students en- rolled in the school's cooperative business program. In its first year, BECK has hosted several speak- ers from the business community and had a Christmas party. 78 Seniors Throughout this school year the life of SHS has been dominated by one group of people, the Seniors. They have spent the year at both having a good time and preparing for their future endeavors, school, jobs, marriage. Though theirs is the smallest class, they are an integral part of school. They form the background of both its social and educational structure. To them, this section of the 1971 Bluejay is dedicated.
