BLUEJAY NINETEEN HUNDRED SEVENTY PUBLISHED BY THE BLUEJAY STAFF OF SABETHA HIGH SCHOOL SABETHA, KANSAS THE ANNUAL STAFF Linda, Susan, David, June, Don, Eddie, Karen, Juanita, Kathy, Janis, Mrs. Ahrens. 2 DEDICATION We hereby dedicate the 1969-1970 Annual to the new Sabetha High School. As the first class to graduate from this new and totally modern school, we feel called upon to thank those responsible for giving us this privilege. We say thank you to our parents and other boosters who voted this school into existence. We thank the school board and the teachers for this op- portunity of learning. Most of all we thank Mr. Cleavenger, Uncle Joe to many of us, for all the time and effort he put into making this school possible. 3 Thank you one and all. Seniors 70' TO THE CLASS OF 1970--Sabetha Sr. High The class of 1970 has been a class of firsts . You were the first Freshman class under the school Uni- fication Act. You were the first class to have spent your entire career under the Unification Law. You are the first class to graduate from the new Sabe- tha Senior High School Building. Because of all this you have been a distinguished group. There is no doubt that you will distinguish yourselves, collectively and individually, as time goes on. Please accept my congratulations and best wishes for continued success. J. A. Cleavinger Superintendent Each student can be proud of the new school which they were privileged to attend despite some incon- veniences. The different courses which were offered for the first time in this school system already have contributed to making our high school a better in- stitution of learning. To each member of the senior class of 1970, I wish to extend best wishes and lots of success in the future. Your class has the enviable distinction of being the first class to graduate from the new Sabetha Senior High School. Congratulations to the staff of the 1970 yearbook for another fine production of the activities during the 1969-1970 school year. Beryl V. Drumm Principal 4 ELIZABETH AHRENS Library M.S. Hugh Herbert's KISS AND TELL, was the easiest for some time. It was also, in several ways, the most successful. A stage crew working under Tom Noble, Tom Evans, and Rick Wisdom had one set to worry about, a screened- in porch. Flats were covered with horizontal strips of cardboard to represent siding and the whole was painted white. Nylon net provided the screen. The set, though simple, provided an attractive background for the action. 33 Linda Kellenberger's properties crew scrounged sofas, tables, and general household parapher- nalia--and provided hot chocolate for the cast. Ann Montgomery, Libby Meyer, Joy Bit- terman, Gary Scoby, Don Shump, and Dean Remmers headed up the costumes, light, makeup, and sound crews. The script itself provided few difficulties. Originally set during World War II, it lent itself reasonably well to being updated to the present, although teenagers have changed ob- servably since 1944; and Corliss Archer, play- ed by Janet Meyer, seemed more like thirteen than the fifteen of the script. The play has a solid, if unsensational history. A successful Broadway production, it was adapted into a long-running radio series, Meet Corliss Archer, and into a movie star- ring—would you believe Shirley Temple? The junior class production garnered a full measure of audience laughter, and many will remember: the explosive temper and clean comic touch of Joe Estle as the ha- rassed father; the motherly conster- nation of Anne Haflich; the Holy Cow! of Gene Bauman's Dexter; the sight of John Murchison in short Boy Scout pants as the irrepressible and unlovable Raymond (the show's scene stealer); the charm of Jody Mock's Mildred; the eager bewilderment of Janet Meyer as Corliss; and the gen- eral competence of the entire cast. 34 35 Beautiful music. Though there were a few' goofs in the technical area the performance w'as considered excellent. SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER: the Spring-Bailey kaftan creations for Wandering —Janis Henry's indescrib- able bust —Don Strahm and Warren Geiger in black tights--the fastest national anthem in history, thanks to Fred Showman—Rick Wisdom's great cartoons—Dean Remmers as Superman—Connie Schmitt as the little girl-- and top performances by an extraordinary high school cast. 79 80 81 83 1st ROW: Drex Flott, John Mowder, Tom Fenton, Pat Bauman. 2nd ROW: Billy Shump, Duane Campbell.
