Published hv Senior Class 19.16 Sabetha High School Sabetha, Kansas January to December, We'll have the se MOMENTS TO REMEMBER The senior sneak when we painted the town, The Prom with girls in lovely gowns, We'll have these MOMENTS TO REMEMBER. The quiet classes, the noisy halls, The faithful yelling of the football calls. We'll have these MOMENTS TO REMEMBER. When seniors turn to college Arid horseplay disappears. The excitement we were glad to share Will echo thru the years. When other nights and other days May find us gone our separate ways. We'll have these MOMENTS TO REMEMBER. And after all is said and done, We can't forget 'cause it was such fun, We'll have these MOMENTS TO REMEMBER. Foreword I) Nic iilimi We, the Senior Class of 195o, dedicate this Year Book to the football squad, the cheerleaders, and the Pep Club--to their fighting spirit and chins-up attitude that prevailed ifi victory or defeat. School spirit may be a bit difficult to define, but a lack of it is obvious to everyone. These cheerleaders and Jay- Jays were a top flight set of rooters who never did desert their team nor let a good play go unrecognized. They kept their zest for the game until the last flag was down, and their loyalty to the team and the Blue and White never sagged. May their tribe inc rease. tnniial Slaff Co-editors Regina Snyder Mary K. As the convertible brought the candi- dates-Mary Lou Wenger, Judy Newlin, and Naomi Ireland-onto the field, the crowd waited eagerly to see which was to be queen of the '55 Homecoming festivities. The girls were escorted from the convert- ible by Douglas Metzger, David Robinson, and Dick Rokey. The tense moment ended as Douglas Metzger placed the crown on Queen Naomi Ireland. Aided by the boosting of Queen Naomi, her attendants, the Jay Jays and all the other enthusiastic SHS fans, the Blue Jays defeated the Indians 26-0. This Blue Jay victory added spirit to the evening which was brought to a grand finale with a dance in the gym at which the Combo played. Tempered by the frosty air and honed to a fine edge under the eye of the coaches, the Blue Jay grid machine rolled into the '55 season with a 13-0 win over Seneca. When the last cheer had died away and the Jay Jays laid down their pom- poms after the final game, the Sabetha eleven held a sound 3-5-1 record and second place in the Big-Five. They had scored more points against Topeka Seaman than any other team this year and had given the school a victory at homecoming by waxing hot to smother Hiawatha 26-0. In conference play we did not fare so well, having won one and lost seven for a , 173 percentage and cellar position. Although the won and lost records were not too impressive, every game proved to be an exciting one and provided many thrills for the home rooters. Many of the games were lost by very few points and two were won in the same manner, so all in all we really enjoyed the past season. The Blue Jays played in two tournaments during the season. The team won a second place trophy in the Christmas tournament which included Sabetha, Seneca, Centralia and Wetmore. Seneca was defeated by Sabetha, who in turn was beaten by Centralia. Centralia was first, Sabetha Second, and Wetmore third. Sabetha won its only conference game of the year in the first meeting with Troy. All other conference teams defeated Sabetha twice with the exception of Hiawatha who twice performed the feat in conferen e play and once in the District Tournament. Hiawatha was the favorite to win the District Tournament which was held in our gym and did just that. In the first round Sabetha defeated Maur Hill and Effingham defeated Holton giving both conference teams advancement to the semi-finals. Marysville won over Effingham and Hiawatha over Sabetha in the second round. Hiawatha de- feated Marysville for first place leaving secoftd place to Marysville. Effingham de- feated Sabetha for third place and left the Jays with fourth. So as the 1955-56 season became history, all eyes looked toward the future 1956-57 season with high hopes for a championship team and proudly salute the boys who played their last games as Blue Jays. Bluejays Second In League Meet The Sabetha Bluejays made a surprizrngly strong showing in the Big Six Conference track meet held at Hiawatha Friday afternoon and evening. The Jays copped only one first place finish but score ! heavily in most events to rack up 54 points and second place behind the power- ful Effingham Tigers. It was the highest ranking for a Sabetha team in many years. The weather was not too warm antj held down the crowd and most hopes for record performances. One record was broken when Miller of the new league member. Wathena. heaved the shot 48 feet 1 4 inches in the afternoon. This broke the old record of 46 feet 8Vi inches set by Balletw of Hiawatha rn 1939. Mr. Unruh Faithful and truehearted are words that describe the SHS faculty along with loyalty, willingness to help or patiently give assistance. Over and over a teacher stands in front of a class explaining how to do a pro- blem when we can't seem to catch on, or when we were looking out the window and didn't hear the first, second, or third explanation. Almost no one can be praised, criticized, begged, disliked, argued with, and loved like a teacher. As the years of school come to an end, we seem to forget most of the hard tests, the hours made up for skipping, the long assignments, and the pages and pages to read, and we begin to see that they were try- ing to prepare us for the time when there will be no teachers to blame, criticize, or give excuses to. The success of our school certainly reflects the time and talent put into it by our faculty and friends. Mr, Unruh is superintendent of schools. He is a senior class and Alpha Club sponsor. For me, education means neither more nor less than this. Anything which professes to call itself educa- tion must be tried by this standard, and if it fails to stand the test, I will not call it educa- tion, whatever may be the force of authority or of numbers upon the other side.
