Published by the SENIOR CLASS of Sabetha High School, Sabetha, Kansas FOREWORD In this, the 1954 edition of the year book, we have tried to pre- serve some of the fondest mem- ories of school life. This annual will mean most to the seniors, for this is their last. To them it will bring a profound pang of lonliness. To the underclassmen it will sig- nify the only way of life they have known for many years. To all it is an unforgettable experience. To our foreign student, Klaus Steinmetz, we hope it shows the democratic way of life in our be- loved America. We, the seniors, are proud that you were in our class, and hope that some day our paths may cross again. This annual is for the future. May it be a constant reminder of the happiest years of our lives. DEDICATION We, the seniors of the class of '54, dedicate this book to you, Mr. Unruh, for the encourage- ment and loyalty through thick and thin you have given us and the school all the way during your twelve years of service, six years of which have been as superintendent. You have been a willing, understanding coun- sellor, a loyal friend, and a wise advisor. May this book be a constant reminder of the satis- faction of a task well done. 3 BOARD OF EDUCATION Emmet Greene, president, Donald Close, Kahn Lortscher, Louis Meyer, Ivan Roberts. Bob Popkess. The inspired Blue Jay eleven copped a 14-6 decision over Hiawatha to make homecoming victorious. Yvonne Showalter was crowned queen at half- time by co-captains, John Moser, and Darryl Emert. Queen Yvonne escorted by Klaus Steinmetz and her attendants, Shirley Maelzer and Edith Lancaster, escorted by Lynn Kellenberger and Richard Chandler, were the main attraction of the ballroom scene depicted by ten Kay-Kayette couples and the band as the coronation ceremony. We, the class of 1954, were happy, proud, and saddened to realize that this was our last home- coming as students, and that next year we would be on the outside looking in. r r 'j s the 2), ay Teachers: LaVerne Strahm Martha Humfield Maragret Bradshaw Coach, Larry Baker Principal, Kenneth Kooser Students: Dewey Roberts, Billy Flentie Darlene Strahm Billy Ralston Bobby Heptig Eunice Jones Mary Jane Shadel Fred Mishler Sharon Confer Barbara Metzger Wanda Chilson Lois Locher Mr. Roberts, Merlin Steiner Mrs. Roberts, Connie Smith Mr. Phelps, Arwin Bauman Maid, Delores Glenn Others: Larry Howard Pat Myers James Watts Gary Strahm Faithful and true hearted, Let us boost for our old high. They worked this year for the 6000 point award by doing such things as making favors for hospital trays, cleaning trophies, sending a CARE package, giving baskets of food at Christmas, and in general worked for the betterment of the school and community. This year's Kay club carried on an active social and service program. Among their projects were labor donations to teen-town, Kay-sponsored dances, the annual minstrel assembly, a CARE package, and about fifty pounds of candles to be sent to overseas countries. The boys molded these candles from clear wax and colored them. They sent delegates to the Northeast Kansas district convention and contributed financially to the State organization. This was the first year the Kays have won the 4, 000 point award. Mrs. Unruh has been the physical education instructor at SHS for ten years. She is an excellent instructor and contributes much time and work to the G. A. A. organization to which she brings invaluable experience from her own student days. The G. A. A. has maintained noon hour games this year and in ad- dition has played two night games. The G. A. A. has two main goals. One is to produce strong and healthy bodies, and the other is to achieve awards in the State Athletic Program. BACK ROW: Betty Althouse, Barbara Metzger. The theme of this year's prom was Stork Club. The Country Club was cleverly decorated with rainbow col- ored streamers draped from the side walls to the center of the room with baskets of flowers before the stone fireplace and at intervals along the walls. Table centerpieces were wood- en stork cut-outs, painted orange, black and white. Large reservation cards indicated who each table's guests were.
