Text from Pages 1 - 64 of the 1952 volume:

FOREWORD So ever onward our coarse pursuing — the freshmen and sophomores have a future yet in high school. The juniors have one more year, but for us, the seniors, this is the end of four of the most wonderful years of our lives. It isn't in the human manner to realize and appreciate the opportunities, the beauty, and the sheer joy that am theirs until time has begun to run out, and there is no longer the old familiarities to enjoy. This alone is the reason we have tried to re-capture those precious times, so you may in the after years re- live the glorious, carefree days of high school — that you may dance again in the gym after a football victory, yell the old familiar chants of Sis, have the thrill of a prom, enjoy last minute gab sessions, take an unexcus- ed absence, attend parties and picnics, then go home to sleep the sleep of the blessed. We want this year book to be a symbol of the dear ’'old golden rule days of cherished memories of all the unpre- dictable happenings of high school days. With this aim in mind, the Class of '52 bids farewell to you who have yet to finish your high school experience. So long.' DEDICATION To the future, we the Class of 1952 dedicate this an- nual. May this book become a symbol of high idealism for boys and girls who walk these halls and attend the classes in the after years. Through the friendly com- radship of Sabetha High School, may the incentive be to achieve the highest goals in the Tomorrows. ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION Ivan Roberts, president M.O. LETTERMEN Jack Baker, 160 pound junior, has let- tered three years in football. He plays end. Many a time Jack has been called upon to punt the Jays out of rough ter- ritory. Jack is a three-sport letterman. Keith Brooks, junior and three-sport letterman received honorable mention for All-state. He should be a spark plug come the 1952 season. Jay Buchholz, two-year senior letter- man, played guard. Jay and Paul McNerg- ney shared being knocked-down-and-drag- ged-out all through the 52 season. Jay is top notch pole vaulter for the Jays. Max Dalsing, 170 pound guard with his second football letter, was a starter all through the season. He was a hard- hitting player who could be depended on all the way. Max is a three-sport man. Durryl Emert, 135 pound quarterback has played football both his freshman and sophomore years, lettering this year He has been a member of both track and basketball squads both years. Marion Emert, senior and three-sport letterman, has two football letters. He was the smallest starting player on the football team, standing only five feet seven and weighing 135 pounds. He play- ed right halfback. Tony Heptig, 155 pound junior three- sport athlete, was a starter and defen- sive linebacker who could be depended on in any kind of weather. There was not a single ease of a bad pass from center in the entire season. Joseph Hundley, 128 pound junior earn- ed his first football letter at halfback this year. He was leading scorer on the second team. He ought to have prospects for playing regularly next year. Donald Johns, 155 pound senior, played left tackle. He could always be depend- ed on when a hard hitting substitute was needed. He participated three years in each football and track. This is his first letter in football. Lynn Kellenberger, sophomore 160 pound fullback, was the heaviest man in the backfield, and a dependable one. He is a three-sport letterman. Leroy Lehmkuhl, a 140 pound fighting sophomore tackle, pulled many a man to the grid iron. This is his first letter but his second year of play. He is a second-year trackster. Harold Leuthold, sophomore, won his first football letter this year. He was end man for the second team and is a likely prospect for next year's first team. Harold is a three snort athlete. Loyal, nimble-witted, agressive, deter- mined are qualities that earned for Paul M 33ergney a starting guard position in the Jay line-up. Paul has been on the squad three years, lettering his junior year. He should be a threat next year. Jim Mock, two-year letterman in foot- ball and three-sport athlete, concentrat- ed at halfback position. He plays at the guard spot in basketball, throws the jav- elin and runs the relay in track. Jim should be a boost in SHS’s bid for cham- pionships next year. Richard Phillips, senior the first sem- ester transferring to Morrill, lettered in football as an end on the second team He was on the track squad two years. Roy Ralston, three-year letterman and co-captain of the '51 undefeated Jay football team, earned any bonus he may have received. He was voted on the All- conference first team as a tackle. Roy has lettered in basketball and track. Albert Roberts, 150 pound senior quar- terback, has been out for football for three years, lettering two of those. Al- bert did a brilliant job of calling the plays and was the passer. He is a three sport letterman. Lawrence Smith, 150 pound halfback, has been on the football squad two years, lettering this year. Lawrence lettered as a dash man in track his junior year. Marvin Strahm, a first year letterman and a senior his first year at football, proved to be one of the best ends in the Conference, an exceptional defense end. He is a three sport letterman. Merlin Strahm, 145 pound senior, join- ed the football squad as a junior, let- tering this year. He lettered in track last year. Merlin has played on the FFA intramural basketball team two years. Fred Stalder, 122 pound senior, was the lightest man amoung the letterman. He played halfback and end. Vance Wenger, a senior three-year foot ball letterman, rated honorable mention from the Topeka Capital; the Associated Press chose him All-state tackle, and the Big Six coaches gave him All-state 22 HOMECOMING The boys go rolling down the field to victory.
