Main Street looked just the same. There was the high school where she had had such fun and sometimes sorrow. Right ahead was Joe's Drugstore where she and the gang had drunk sodas and eaten ice-cream by the ton. Just another corner and she'd be home. Joan felt as if she had never loved it quite as much as she did now. Of course it wasn't very big and certainly Mom and Dad weren't rich, but it was home and that's what counted. Going quietly up the steps she stood for a minute and look- ed in the window. There in the living room sat her mother, father and Jim. Mother as usual was knitting, Dad was deep in a book and Jim seemed nervous. Probably wondering when she would arrive. Well, he wouldn't have to wonder much long- er she thought as she gave the bell a hearty ring. She could see Dad getting up, now he was opening the door 'Joanl' he managed to exclaim, as his pipe fell from 1S mouth 'Is it really you? HWhy of course it is Dad' Don't look as lf you had seen ghost ' Laughted Joan Ruthl Dad shouted to his wife Joan came into the hall as her mother came hurrying toward them 'Have w company? Mom ask d Mom gasped as she ot a goo look at the person standing in the shadows Then she was laughing and crying as she hu ged and kissed Joan A half ho r later after evervon had linashed asking ques tions and tney were all settled in the living room, Joan told them something about army life It's tne most wonderful thing that ev r happened to me she said but don't think that I'm not glad to be home becau GI'd rather be here than any where else in the whole world I n ver thought muon about going away befor , but now that I'm hom again, I know that a home is the best thing a person can have, spec ally wh n it' such a lovely one as this Joan could tell by their faces that th whole family agreed I Pickup on Fifth Avenue It happened on an exening when th world went hilarious It began up at 50th ard Fiitd Avena of tdat n ver to be for gotten day I was standing wa ching th crazy crofd when I saw it The boy and girl met in the hustle of a toJn gone mad The boy was an ensign and undoubtedly sure of himself when it came to doing his ob LH girl Nas p etty and wore a h J pass d ach oth r, tk n topped, lock d back and smil d It wa like and love at fir t glanc H stepped up to hfr and said som thing tnen sh said back somethin , and tr y walk ed away lh y went into a bar and had counl of drink then Join d th singirg After that I lo t th m and walked and thought of th people who had died and of the p opl who would n't have to di As I cam upon ot Patrick's Church I d cid ed to go in and as I climbed thc cathedral st ps and went in where it was quiet and peopl wer at prayer, it was th n I saw the Navy kid with his ribton and th girl with har flow er d dr ss, down on th ir kr s prav ng together 1 15 .
