l 1 e Some months later, a Dutchman and his wire come to live in a log cabin a short distance down the river. They seem wealthy to the Luckett family because they have cows, oxen, and many farm implements. The Luckett's have no animals of their own, except an aged dog. The two neighbors become friends and soon afterwards Wyitt and Sulie are employed driving the Dutch cows to and from pasture. , One rainy night Sulie becomes separated from her brother. Wyitt and Sayward hunt and call for Sulie, but she fails to answer. She is never found, even though people from miles around come to hunt for her. lBecauee Worth feels so badly over his loss, he leaves home.. Sayward learns later from a trapper that her father is living again in the East. Knowing that hsr father has deserted the family, Sayward marries Portiue Wheeler, r formerly a Massachusetts lawyer. After they marry they live in the cabin which Worth had built. ,Sayward feels very secure.now because Portius keeps her provided withv feed, and he is a good husband. a Asoha has run away with G1nny's husband: Ginny is working for the Dutch family, and Wyitt has built a home of his own and is taking care of himself. . I liked this book because it was a story about pies. neer life. The book told about the hardships a family had to endure in order to make their homes in the 'North- west'. Men had a kind of freedom, but women had none. Sayward Luckett, however, won a certain freedom through her courage. lIt was real pleasure to read the story - because it was different from any other I had read in a long time. I This book was written by a very young writer, Conrad Richter, who has studied about the lives of people in the pioneer days.' His first book was about crossing the AlleghenieS.' - Evelyn Austin '45
