Returning to the Brook, students were greeted with a bit of ominous news-the very first week. David F. Trask had been appointed Acting Vice Presi- dent for Student Affairs. Optimistically, President Toll hailed the new office as a new link between students and administration. Pessimistically, the first issue of the STATESMAN revealed the appointment in a special Revolution issue, and President Toll gave his first speech of the year in which he attempt- ed to clarify the role of Dr. Trask. A record crowd of l,OOO students attended the first demonstration of the year in Roth where they learned that they were not being given a voice in campus affairs. President Toll faced thirty freshmen who questioned him about tripling. Meanwhile, Polity President Don Rubin became the first of a long line of student leaders who thought they could best serve the University by tend- ing their resignations, Rubin resigned from the Chairmanship of the Council on Student Affairs. ., .
