CARDINAL POINTS The members of the 1982 Cardinal Points staff seek to provide a newspaper service to furl her all students ' academic, cultural, so- cial and recreational pursuits, and to act as an independent forum for the expression of all responsible student, faculty and citizen opinions and queries. This newspaper shall be known as Cardi- nal Points, the students ' newspaper. We feel that is exactly who it belongs to, the students of Plattsburgh State University College. Our goal is to inform students on all as- pects of student-related activities deemed important by the members of the Cardinal Points staff. And we work our hardest to put out a paper we feel is to the best of our ability. We think the following sums it all up. If I were to try to read, much less an- swer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other busi- ness. I do the very best I know how — the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what Is said against me won ' t amount to anything. There are presently ten Greek organizations t hat individually sponsor fund-raising drives for various charities around the community. Pledging season enables Interested men and wom- en to become members of one of the Greek organiza- tions and Includes exciting weekend parties at various houses off campus. Finalilizing their mem- bership on Hell Night at the Royal gives one a feeling of accomplishment and relief to be a Greek. How- ever, we are by no means newcomers to Plattsburgh State. Since 1966 we have been known as Sigma Tau Sig- ma. Our name has traditionally been associated with campus und commu- nity involvement, outstanding par- ties at our house, which is located at 147 Hrlnkerhoff Street, and intramu- ral athletic excellence. During the past year, the Crows have organized and participated in campus and charity fund raisers which netted over 15,500. This un- matched record of community ser- vice led to our being awarded the Presidents Cup for the second con- secutive year. The 1981 Cardinal Soccer Team estab- lished itself as one of the best in the country in NCAA Division III, finishing the regular season ranked 14th in the Nation and 3rd in New York State. This accomplishment was recognized with an invitaion to the NCAA Division III National C hampionships. In an exciting game, the Cards were ousted in sud- den death overtime by St. Lawrence. Each of the team ' s losses was against teams that were invited to participate in the NCAA Championship Tournament. The season had many highlights: A hard fought win over Albany in a steady down- pour, the emotional win over Onconta, the exciting wins over Union and Binghampton. The biggest victory, no doubt was over un- beaten Keenc State in front of a large and hostile Parent ' s week-end crowd in Keen, NHL This success story really was more than anyone could have anticipated at the start of the season. A starting line-up of predomi- nantly sophomores and freshmen, suggest- ed many questions. The schedule had been altered to include perennial powerhouses U.V.M., Union and Keene St.; The SUNYAC Conference is one of the most competitive in the Nation in Division III soccer. The team matured rapidly, exhibiting team unity that is rare, yet so essential to a top flight team. Prospects for 1982 are excellent, with 16 of the 17 players returning. COACH ' S COMMENTS This season was particularly gratifying, not only because of its success on the field, but even more so in the dedication and exceptional team spirit displayed by everyone! We established ourselves as a qual- ity team, and earned a high reputa- tion for fairness and sportsman- ship. Co-captalns, Szambowski and McDonagh as well as assistant coaches, Myler and Andrews have to be credited with providing that sort of leadership. I certainly am proud to be part of this team! The top eight teams in New York State qualified for the single elimi- nation-consolation tournament as follows: University of Rochester, Hartwick, Cortland State, Platts- burgh State, Albany State, Wells, Buffalo State and William Smith. Plattsburgh State finished fourth in the tourney after beating Albany State on Friday, October 30 and los- ing to University of Rochester and Hartwick on Saturday, 31st and Sunday, November 1. A third place for the men and 2nd place for the women in the New York State Kegionals was just enough to enable the teams to make the trip to Kenosha. Wisconsin. In ad- dition, the Cardinals be- came only one of three schools in the nation that have both their men ' s and women ' s teams vying for the national title. The others are Pomano-Pltzer (California) and Southeastern Massa- chusetts. For the men, their 3rd place finish against the top 22 Division III schools in cw York took most by sur- prise. Compel ing against the same schools and the same Albany Slate Course (at the Albany Invitational and the X YSCTFA championships), the Card ' s finished 7th and 9th on both occasions, leav- ing much doubt on the part of many that a bid to the Xa- tionals was possible. But the PSl ' C runners were a stub- born bunch, as they dis- played the best example of pack running than any other team in the race. Bob Bren- ner stormed out with the leaders and raced home in Kith place, clocking 26:07 over the 5.05 mile course. Following closely was John Melnick, the team ' s only se- nior, in 26:24, good for 21st place. Dave Champagne ran his best race of the season to grab 24th in 26:33, while Bill Jones crossed the line in 26:50 good for 35th. Mike Hcllijas finished 37th in 26:53, while John Marks ran 66th in 27:42 and Eric Dav was 70th in 27:47. Head coach Dick Fischer, in only his second year at Plattsburgh State, noted that seven schools had their first runner in before we did, yet the tightness of our group got us to nation- als. Many coaches were quick to praise Fischer, a Minnesota native, for the turnaround of the Cardinals in just two short seasons. It looks as though Plattsburgh COtlld once again become the .National Powerhouses that they were in the mid-70 ' s. The team is young. Losing only Melnick to graduation this year, plus the addition of a few front runners that were unable to compete this season because of injuries and ineligibility, next year ' s team could be untouchable. Plattsburgh was a distant 3rd with 128 points, to out-distance such rivals as Albany, who were 4th with 138 points, Bingham- ton, Cortland, St. Lawrence and KIT. The Cards were often undcrstrcngth compared to their rivals, which made a difference lute in the matches. Although the Redbirds posted wins against Clarkson and Trinity and split two matches with St. Michael ' s, they were overwhelmed by Albany, McGill, St. Lawrence and Siena, and dropped closer decisions to Potsdam and RPI. Ac- cording to Coach Hammond, The National Championship, and nothing short of that. But I have to cautiously opti- mistic about our season. With the loss of our goaltcnder and three regular defenscmcn. well be youn g and Inexperi- enced in these areas. We have a difficult schedule — we ' re away for 22 games. That puts a lot of pressure on our players, but I have confidence they will work hard and have a good year. I think we ' ve had a suc- cessful year in terms of recruit- ing. We have some large skates to fill, but I feel we have the nucleus of a fine team. Captain Rick Young and al- ternate captains Lou Martin and Francois Ucllefeuillc lead the Cardinals into the 33-game campaign. Also returning are sharp-shooting forwards Gae- tan D ' AnJou and Pierre Brunei, each with a good chance to take over the top spots in Car- dinal scoring history. The blend of veterans and pros- pects will determine the suc- cess of the Cardinals in 1981- 82. The year opened with the promise of better things due to the presence of capable team veterans, Paul Glodis, Mark Sausville and Rod McCorvey and the addition of talented players Bill Ste- vens, Steve Holmes and Brian Gonyeau. But the year has not been an auspicious one, with the current hoop squad in danger of setting a record for most defeats in a season. Paul Goose Glodis has been the team ' s leader in victory and defeat. He has aver- aged about 15 points and seven rebounds per game. Stevens also has contributed, with an average of 13 points and six rebounds a game. The season record to date is 2-5, which means the team is headed for a losing year. Plattsburgh State romped over Middlebury and split with St. Michael ' s but lost to swim- ming powers Albany State, RPI, Queen ' s and Potsdam State. Perform- ers of note for PSUC include freestyler Ian Cherry, breasts! roker Peter Mc- Cormack and diver Mike Ewald. Andy Kroehmal and Bob Peterson also have raced well in the freestyle events. With a 1-9 re- cord, the team is now trying to qualify as many Individuals as possible for the New York Male AIAW championships In Bing- ham (on Beb. 25-27. The Cardinal swim- mers defeated Skidmore in their second meel but lost to Russell Sage, lost twice to St Michael ' s, and were bowled over by a wave of outstanding teams from Albany State, St, Lawrence, Middlebury, Queen ' s, UVM, and Potsdam State. Since losing its besl swimmer, Amanda Day, who returned home to Wales after the fall semester, the team has had several swimmers come on to pick up the scoring slack. In May 1981, 1 accepted the responsibility of Editor in Chief of The 1982 Cardinal Yearbook. My knowledge of Yearbook publica- tions was limited, and I knew I would have to learn the ropes. The challenge was there, so I accepted it. The Editors job is primarily managerial, a great deal of planning and forethought is required, as is input from the Yearbook staff and the student body. . .
