Very frankly, any senator who talks about sending American forces into Cambodia ought to lead the charge himself. I ' m fed up with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in — particularly stupid wars of this kind that add nothing to our security. — Senator George McGovern 1970 It seems like just yesterday, but it was 1 0. 9. 8, 7 . . . years ago! A recap of the decade of the seventies. The year 1970 is remembered for the United States entrance into the Viet Nam War. It was April 1 970 when Presi- dent Richard Nixon ordered the U.S. troops to enter Cambodia. The United States became a nation more split than ever. One tragedy that will never be forgotten is the action that took place at Kent State University in Ohio. Because of riots and demonstrations about the Viet Nam War, National Guardsmen killed four students and wounded at least nine. This incident caused a serious uproar among many other colleges and Universities in the Nation. Studies were done to find out what ac- tually caused the killings. These studies came up with one basic conclusion, there was no reason for this tragedy. The Kent State tragedy has been and probably will always be remembered as just one of the signs of anger and grief Deaths by hostile action — 47,072 Deaths by nonhostile action — 10,435 Wounded requiring hospitalization — 153.329 Wounded, nonhospitalized — 150.375 Final American casualty figures. Viet- nam conflict, U.S. Department of Defense 36 NEWS 1970 1971 The year 1971 is significant in that relations with the People ' s Republic of China were improved, a step toward world peace. Henry Kissinger made two trips to the People ' s Republic in 1 97 1 . His first trip was kept con- fidential but his second trip in October was well publicized. President Nixon planned on visiting China the following year so Mr. Kissinger was making preparations for the important trip. It seems that these efforts to break down the wall ' ' between China and the United States were well worth the time and trouble. The trips made by Kissinger and in the following year by Richard Nixon would prove to be very significant in the future. Also during 1 97 1 — Sadat hints of possible peace someday with Israel ... Ida Amin takes over Uganda . . . frozen wages and prices ... At N.Y. ' s At- tica prison 39 inmates and nine hostages die ... Charles Manson convicted of Tate slayings . . . .Skyjacking . . . earthquake rocks Los Angeles . . . Gay Liberation becomes known . . . from Midi back to Mini and hot pants . . . Archie Bunker . . . Walt Disney World opens its gates. 1971 NEWS 37 There are certain things in life that hap- pen every four years, for example, the Leap year, and Presidential elections. One other event that takes place every four years are the Olympics. The 1 972 summer Olympics stand out in some people ' s mind as the Olympics of Tragedy. The setting was Munich, West Germany and opening day ceremonies symbolized a feeling of peace, with 5,000 doves being released at the stadium. At the time, no one ever thought this peaceful scene could precede such a horrifying tragedy. The Israeli team quarters were broken into by the Palestinians early one morning. The members of the Israeli team were held captive and two of the athletes were killed beca use they tried to resist the Palestinians. The Palestinians threatened to kill nine more Israelis if 200 Arabs were not quickly released from Israeli prisons. There was an am- bush and five terrorists were killed. Un- fortunately, not before the nine Israelis were killed. Even though the Olympics are suppose to signify peace between nations, such an unfortunate tragedy as this occured and put a damper on the spirit of things. Also during 1972— Fighting in Northern Ireland . . . Largest voter turnout in 24 years; Nixon victorious . . . George Wallace shot dur- ing primary . . . Sex discrimination ended . . . Chess Champ of the World U.S. ' s Bobby Fischer . . . Movies: The Godfather . Cabaret . . . Deaths: Harry S. Truman, J. Edgar Hoover. Jackie Robinson . . . Mark Spitz 7 gold swim- ming metals in Olympics . . . Olga Kor- but gave USSR Gymnastic Glory in Olympics . . . Nixon and Brezhnev sign the first Strategic Arms Limitation. r 38 NEWS1972 I don ' t give a shit what happens. I want you all to stonewall it. Let them plead the Fifth Amendment, coverup or anything else, if it ' ll save it — save the plan. —Richard Nixon 1973 1973 brings back memories of the Watergate trial. Dramatic and confus- ing scenes took place in front of millions of T.V. watchers. John W. Dean accused President Nixon of being direc- tly involved in the coverup of the break- in at the Democratic National Head Quarters. Another member of the house staff Alexander Butterfield said that the President had tapes of Oval of- fice conversations. Nixon did not want to give up the tapes. Fuel was constant- ly being added to the fire and the Con- gress wanted the President impeached. Finally Nixon did give up some of the tapes for investigation, and then even more conflict aroused when the one tape had an eighteen minute gap. Nixon ' s days in the White House became numbered. What did the President know and when did he know it? — Senator Howard Baker Also during 1973 — Yom Kippur war in Israel . . . Spiro Agnew resigns . . . Arab oil embargo . . . No one in the White House staff, no one in this administration, presently employed, was involved in this very bizarre incident . . . What really hurts in matters of this sort is not the fact that they occur, because overzealous peo- ple in campaigns do things that are wrong. What really hurts is if you try to cover it up. — Richard Nixon 1973 NEWS 39 I have never been a quitter. To leave of- fice before my term is completed is op- posed to every instinct in my body. — Richard Nixon in his resignation speech 1974 The Watergate dilema carried over into 1974. President Nixon fought hard to keep his governmental administration together. The Watergate tapes and all the information about the cover-up were brought into the public eye. The House Judiciary Committee voted for the first bill of impeachment in many years. The President became totally frustrated and fed up. so in front of millions, in a dramatic and tearful speech he resigned. He admitted to I. Gerald R. Ford. President of the United States ... do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the Un- ited States . . . —Gerald Ford some of his errors, and said his farewells. The new President was Jerry Ford, and he was an honorable man . The country breathed more easily now that the ordeal was finally over. The new President granted Nixon a Presidential pardon and some Americans were enraged. Nixon did not escape the public reaction and to this day some people shiver when they hear Nixons name and the mention of Watergate. Also during 1974 — Worst recession in 40 years . . . Patty Hearst kidnapped and transformed to SLA guerrila . . . Drought in Africa . . . Famine in Bangladesh . . . Transcen- dental Meditation . . . Bjorn Borg . . . Ali beats Foreman . . . Austria, I just hope you don ' t feel that I let you down. -Richard Nixon 40 NEWS1974 1975 The happiest time of 1975 was when the Vietnam war finally came to an end. totally. Even though a cease fire was agreed upon in 1973. there was still conflict. The U.S. left the Saigon government with 5 billion dollars of ar- senal and sent millions more to keep North Vietnam from attacking after the truce. Cambodia and South Vietnam fell prey to Communist offenses. The U.S. Congress refused to aid Cambodia and South Vietnam and Thieu. presi- dent of South Vietnam said America abandoned his people . A massive air- lift took place to rescue the almost four- teen hundred U.S. citizens. There was fighting, looting and other devient behaviors taking place, but it was the conclusion to the biggest conflict in more than one hundred years. Also in 1975- Patty Hearst captured . . . Lynette (Squeaky) Fromme points gun at Presi- dent Ford . . . Debate over Right to life . . . Malpractice crisis . . . highest unem- ployment rate . . . M.Y. escapes default . . . Deaths: Mao Tse-Tung. 1977 Egyptian President Anwar Sadat made his historic trip to Israel. Sadat was the first leader to visit there since Israel was born. This trip had been preceded by talks in Geneva about a Mideast settle- ment. The outlook of these talks didn ' t look good at all. until Begin agreed to welcome Sadat to Israel. Both countries seemed happy about the decision regarding the trip. Sadat shook Begins 1976 The Bicentennial of America was the biggest celebration of 1976. America celebrated it ' s 200th birth; 200 years of freedom. People celebrated all over the country. Operation sail was the most amazing event of the celebration. In the Hudson River 30.000 boats, small and large, surrounded the Statue of Liberty. Included among the boats were 16 tall ships from all over the world. The most amazing part of Operation Sail was at night when the skies above the statue were lit up with glaring fireworks. It was the best showing of fireworks ever. As July 4, 1976 rapidly passed by, firecrackers and Bands could still be heard for miles. Yes America had it ' s birthday and Americans troubled Masses weren ' t yearning to breath 42 NEWS1976 hand, and this was the first stepping stone to future talks concerning this Treaty of Peace . Also in 1977 — Carter ends Bl Bomber production . . . ERA . . . Natural Gas shortage . . . Alaska pipeline opened . . . Son of Sam kills six people and wounds seven in N.Y ... .Gary Gilmore executed . . . Worst Air Calamity collision of KLM 747 and Jumbo jet 577 dead ... N.Y. City blacked out, looting, rioting . . . Mopeds ... Roots on TV . . . David Frost interviews Nixon . . . Movies: Saturday Night Fever . . . Stars Wars . . . Close Encounters of the Third Kind . . . Annie Hall . . . Books: Falcone . . . Greatest Young jockey ever, Stevie Cauthen. 1978 As predicted in 1 977, 1 978 would be a year with much significance in the respect of world peace. In thirteen days of isolated meetings Carter, Begin, and Sadat reached a final decision and moved the Middle East toward a feeling of peace. At Camp David the treaties were signed by the three leaders basically agreeing to a future hope of peace. 1977 NEWS 43 Animal House . . . Coming Home . . . San Diego ' s mid-air collision kills 144 people ... Deaths: Golda Meir, Hubert Humphrey. Jomo Kenyatta, Margaret Mead. Karl Wallenda; high wire act. . ' 1979 1979 was the year that brought the Pope. Pope John Paul the 2nd to the United States. The Pope was greeted by millions from the moment he arrived in Boston. Many just wanted a glimpse of the Pope. People wore T-shirts with the slogan. I got a peep at the Pope . The Pope voiced his disapproval of birth control, divorce, and marriage for priests. The Pope was in M.Y.. praying with Cardinal Cooke in the rain. His physical endurance was quite un- believable for in his short stay he traveled almost 1 2.000 miles. The Pope also preached at Yankee Stadium in front of 75.000 people. Pope John Paul U s famous line from this trip is when he was applauding a group of children and he said. Woo, Woo. Woo. Another Also in 1978- Mass Suicide in Guyana . . . Aldo Moro kidnapped and killed . . . Panama Canal treaty ratified . . . Pope VI dies, Pope John Paul chosen and 34 days later he dies, now a non-Italian pope elected . . . Test tube baby . . . Atlantic Balloon crossing . . . Spinks beat Ali, and then Ali beats Spinks . . . Toga par- ties . . . Movies: The Deer Hunter . . . 44 NEWS 1978 Also in 1979— New Pro-Hanoi Government . . . Starvation in Cambodia. topic of the year 1 979 is the impact of the struggle between Iran and the U.S. At the time of this writing the fate of 50 American hostages in Teheran remains uncertain, as the test between Iran and the U.S. goes into it ' s 2nd month. This uproar will definately effect the United States for a while. There have been demonstrations, beatings, threats and insults that have come from Americans in reaction to the hostage situation. Hopefully peace and hostage release will come. We can only wait as Khomeini jeopardizes American oil supplies and interests in a strategic part of the world. This Iranian crisis is definitely a test of wills. CREDIT: This section would not have been possible without the help of LIFE AGAZINE. With a theme of Week- end in Europe . Wilson Hall grab- bed top honors with their German float, but Whiteface raised some eye- brows with their protest float. Mary Beth VanDeveer was crowned Homecoming Queen of the parade. This year ' s homecoming was characterized by the large number of activities which included the Arts and Crafts Fair, while Hockey replaced Football as the homecoming game. PSGC Hockey and Soccer teams went up against two powerhouses in Division I, Colgate University and Canadian National Finalist Concordia University respectively. The Cards thrilled a sellout crowd with a 7-4 hockey victory, but the Soccer team saw defeat in a tough 2-0 loss. Charlie Daniels started off the long Homecoming weekend with music at the Fieldhouse and Destiny continued the trend at Pub night. The Cards had a 1 lead at the half, and in grueling match managed to hold on and win 2-1. The Cards were not so victorious when they played Potsdam State. Porcelli and Rizzo and new-comers Walker, Wilfore, Gerney and Espina add much to the hoopsters. Over Christmas vacation the Cardinals became Tournament Champions at Brooklyn College. In the first game PSCIC beat Brooklyn and in the championship game they came out on top over Binghampton.
