It was Amity, designed by New York City artist William King under a SUNY grant. The construction was done by a local firm with the metal donated by a steel company and fabricated by an establishment in Vermont. A recurring question seems to be, What is it? ' Amity, representing the friendship between the United States and Canada, has had many pointed criticisms from faculty, students and visitors. It has been referred to as everything from an object of art to a pile of rusty scrap metal. Whether you can appreciate it or not Amity is here to stay. 17 College Bookstore and Feinberg Library 18 Life is not always this placid on campus. Once a semester we have . . . In April of 1976, Governor Carey cut the Pittsburgh State operational budget, leaving it short $660,000, but, more importantly, depriving our students of their valuable education. Freshmen intake was forced to drop 317c, as was transfer admissions by 20%. In September of 1975, we accep- ted 1773 new students. In 1976 it had declined to 1550. Fifty-five positions had to be eliminated by Dr. Burke. Six teaching faculty, and 15 from the academic support staff had to be cut. People being laid off, given pink slips. Their lives are in- despensable to our students and their service inestimable. As of February 1, 1977, it was announced that another 29 posi- tions will be eliminated from our faculty due to state budget cuts. GEfflAN I IH- CELLED The Budget Cuts And What The Students Did. A peaceful rally designed to protest the budget cuts was staged and attended by thousands of students from the SUNY school system. The protest rally which began at Lincoln Park in the Capitol area proceeded peacefully until some students, sparked by remarks of some legislators as they entered the Capitol Building, broke their way through the line and stormed the building. The crowd quickly dispersed as the violence spread. Some sources indicate that approximately 300 students entered the building smashing doors and windows as they entered. Those students that entered chanted, We want Carey , but Carey, under the protection of troopers, left the building through the offices of the At- torney General. Later, police rushed to the scene. There have been estimates placing the crowd of protesters as high as 30,000 with 280 buses lining the streets of the Capitol building. The effect the rally may have had on the legislature is ambiguous. Seymor Posner (D — Bronx) joined the stu- dents outside the Capitol Building to protest the proposed cuts. As quoted from the Daily News, State Senator Edwyn Mason (R — Hobart) said, They make me feel better about cutting the budget. After this, I think most of us feel we didn ' t cut enough. — Norman Radow 30 31 32 Campus Housing If It ' s Your Choice 37 IICE GUYS PREFER BLONDES 3UT SEX FIENDS LIKE ME REN T SO PARTICULAR I 42 An Alternate Living Style 43 44 45 46 The Pyramid Mall 1975 saw the completion of the Pyramid Mall in Plattsburgh. This new addition to uptown is a big contrast to the quaint streets and old buildings in downtown. Some of the old establishments such as the Daffodil, have relocated to a newer store front in the mall, vacating downtown and leaving it virtually barren. This semester, the Plattsburgh Chamber of Commerce has proposed to study the situa- tion. Possibilities include enclosing the downtown area in a mall. The bars have also felt the pressure due to the affect the mall is having on the downtown shop- ping area. Possibilities in this area included the earlier closing and later opening hours. Despite all this however, there is one tradition in downtown Plattsburgh that has not changed . . , 47 •18 The Big Brother ' s Beer Blast! The Monopole Beginning the long truck back to the dorms on a cold, northcountry night, a favorite stop along the way is Monopoles for a hot piece of pizza. The Monopole, ac- cording to the overwhelming majority of students at Plattsburgh State, serves the best pizza in the state. Ac- cordingly, it won this award in 1974. The bar can be extremely small at times, especially when it is fully patronized, but you can always slip away upstairs to a cozy, relaxed atmosphere . . . P.B. The weather was perfect for all the events from a blue-grass concert to a semi-formal dance. The Fri- day night beer blast was the last to be held in the Saranac Dining Hall. And keeping in the tradi- tion of Sadie Hawkins, many of the male students were treated to an elegant night at the semi-for- mal. In all, the committee did a fine job! Miss Sadie Hawkins, USA. Despite the recent controversy over the alloca- tion of S. With Kelly Chabot as Chairman, the 8 different committees worked to get the entire campus and community involved. Events ranged in nature from a Children ' s Festival to Pie throwing to blue grass music and beer. Personalities involved Mayor Roland St. Pierre, President Burke of the college and our poster child for the Northern Adirondack Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. During those 48 hours, the 8 long, hard weeks of preparation came to an end with a $6,000 success and a very special feeling within the hundreds of people who worked. Although all the MDA dance marathons are different with respect to length, events and amount of money raised, they all share the same emotions. As one student at Colorado State expressed it, A dance marathon for muscular dystrophy is more than just raising money for a very special cause. It ' s hard work, determination, and a growing love for those who dance and those who can ' t . 78 77 7 ' ! Arts and Crafts Fair Several times a year, the College Center is host to Arts and Crafts Fairs. These are sponsored by both the College Center and the Student Association. The biggest one usually occurs as one of the main events of Spring Weekend with virtually hundreds participating. Ven- dors for this affair come from as far away as Montreal and Vermont. While the Spring Weekend Fair is usually scheduled for outdoors, weather permitting, several smaller ones have been held in the vacant bookstore. The most popular crafts sold at both types of fairs are the silver and feather jewelry crafts, pottery, and macrame. Some of the unique items are etchings in stone and the balloon sculptures. All in all, these fairs are well attended. International Debate Series For the past two years. PSUC has been the host school for top debaters from Japan, England and Scotland participating in the International Debate Series Program. These stu- dents come to the U.S. and put on ex- hibition debates on a number of topics against debaters from the host schools. This year, the team from the University of Edinborough debated one of the PSUC varsity teams on the topic of discontinuing the Olympic Games. The debate was parliamen- tary style, which allowed for both an exchange of debate issues and cultural expression. What follows is a brief summary of the debate. In the first picture, Dean Clarkson in- troduces the debaters, the resolution and some Scottish jokes. During Alan Drummond ' s first speech, he talks about the exorbitant amount of money being spent on the games and his partner ' s sex life. 82 Here Alan and his partner. Jeremy Hayes, are not speaking to each other (partiallv due to Alan ' s last speech) while the PSUC team discuss their counterplan. Here we see the first Plattsburgh speaker, Tim Henlschel, Riving the affirmative team ' s first constructive speech on the valu e of the Olympic Games and asking Alan the question. Over the past school year, the paper went through what many people feel to be some very positive changes. One section which was recently added to the paper was the feature-centerfold. Throughout last semester it contained some humor, some serious feature material and some interesting mixtures of things that, well — gave the student a guide to follow when handling com- plicated situations at PSUC. (If you missed the bursarettes feature you may very well be lost next semester). Overall, the current staff of the paper feels they have done a pretty good job. Tom Robotham said, The paper may be sloppy at times — sometimes to the point where it ' s even funny. There was the time that a front page article reported, in all seriousness, that students eat too much. ' But we try hard — and as long as Sex Councils and Bur- sarettes stay around, so will we. In addition to this, we have been awarded the college ' s Scholastic Cup, a distinction we have realized for the past five semesters. 192 Alpha Kappa Phi Agos Colors: Blue and While Flowers: Yellow Rose 5 Alpha Kappa Phi holds individualism as one of the most important aspects of sorority. As distinct per- sonalities we feel that by combining the various talents and interests of many we can emerge as an effective constructive force. In this way we can best contribute to each other, the college, and the community. With every new sister welcomed into AGO, a totally new experience happens for the group. She brings her own ideas and goals to the sorority improving AGO with fresh outlooks and abilities. There are many friendships, happiness, and even some disappointments involved in a sorority; each aspect can be a learning ex- perience for all that are involved. AGO has many exciting events this year, one being the crowning of a sister as the 1976 Fall Homecoming Queen, while others participated on the various com- mittees for Homecoming weekend. We are presently in- volved for the second year with the Association of Children with Learning Disabilities. Some sisters help by tutoring children at Monty Street School, others have put together learning buckets for the Bucket Brigade. Again this year we will man a booth for the annual Health and Well Fair. We also visit nursing homes throughout the semester. This year we participated in Christmas Caroling along with the Psi Ep ' s and Clios at the C.V.P.H. Medical Center. We also do babysitting for U.S.O. every Sunday. These activities and many more have brought us closer to the community as well as campus. Our house is located at 66 Broad Street, across from Macdounough Hall. 193 The organizations, commonly referred to as the Greeks, lend another dimension to the PSUC campus. Besides partaking in S.A. sponsored activities, the com- munity benefits from their existence. Blood drives, babysitting, nursing home visits, collections for the heart fund, and bikathons are some of the Greek spon- sored events. Perhaps one of the reasons for their success has to do with their loyalty. As one of their cries go: Brothers, sisters, shout out in unity! Brothers, sisters interfraternity. 195 Theta Kappa Beta 0KB sion at the tournament and donated the proceeds to the C l or8: Big Brother organization as well as the youth organiza- Black and White ' ' on scholarships. We also held raffles for the benefit of various charities. We ' re known on campus for having our Roaring 20 ' s beer blast which is open to all campus. 196 AA9 Alpha Delta Theta Alpha Delta Theta is both a service and a social organization, comprised of girls of all types. A means of getting involved in both school activities and community projects. Alpha Delta Theta provides both fulfillment and an outlet for creativity that is often lacking in the college environment. This year the AD ' S, as in the past years, sold carna- tions for the Heart Fund. We ' re also entrants in the Gong Show for the benefit of Multiple Sclerosis. Diverse social experiences bring its members into contact with a variety of individuals and groups, helping to develop social maturity. Lasting friendships, insight, good times, flexibility — just a little of the spirit of Alpha Delta Theta. JO AD ' S Colors: Lavender and White Flower: Violot 197 Pi Alpha Nu IIAN The brothers of Pi Alpha Nu have been very active in community affairs. We sold apples to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis, in addition to collecting over two thousand dollars for the Leukemia Foundation in one day. This year we won second place in the snow sculptures for Winter Weekend entitled, Dilithium Crystals. Right now we are affiliated with T.K.E. and are seek- ing to become a national fraternity. In October, we will celebrate our Twentieth anniversary. Pi Alpha Nu Colors: Red and Gold 0AA Theta Alpha Lambda Just what makes a Thalian Girl ... Being a Thalian means many things. Besides the community work, the campus activities and the parties, it is a feeling deep within every sister of unity, cooperation and un- derstanding based on mutual love and respect for one another and our sorority. Yet these abstract terms tell only half the story. Thalian is any girl — you, and me, in- dividuals working through their own self expression, realizing their fullest potentials with the help of all, yet sacrificing personal desires for a group of girls whose concerns and understanding has given so much to each of us. Theta Alpha Lambda is a way of expression and life, a something real and tangible for all who chose to head its call. ■P9 Wm m-wm Colors: Antique Gold and Navy Blue Flower: Golden Mum 199 Sigma Tau Sigma 2T2 m mm m m M m m Sig Tau ' s Colors: Green and White During the year the brothers of Sigma Tau Sigma have sponsored three Blow-out parties. Our first blow-out party was co-sponsored with the sisters of Alpha Delta Theta. The sisters of Theta Alpha Lambda helped us co- sponsor our second party. The third blow-out party was sponsored by our brothers. A grand total of twenty kegs were finished off and all campus now knows what good parties the Sig Tau ' s give. We are currently selling Sig Dogs down at Filions and invite anyone to come and sample them. This year we sold over a thousand donuts for the Heart Fund. A new coach and many new runners presented a challenge to all those involved. The runners had the misfortune to open the season at home against the talented Keene State crew that was much further along in training. What would have been a tough race by season ' s run turned into a Keene State rout as the freshman received a rough initiation. The Card ' s reboun- ded strongly the next week, defeating Boston College and the University of Vermont at UVM. Two weeks later the Cards put 13 runners in front of UVM ' s first man, recording a shutout. Unable to repeat as conference champions, they finished third in the SUNYAC meet in Oswego, and a dis- mal sixth at the Albany Invitational. The cardinal victory over Syracuse was the season ' s high point. The season ended on a low note, however, as the team could only muster a 17th Place finish at the IC4A ' s cham- pionships held at New York. Smokey arenas, cramped fieldhouses, and flying elbows seem to bring out the best in the combative Cardinal runners. The 1976-77 season was no exception to the rule. The Cards opened at the University of Vermont, copping the UVM Christmas Invitational and defeating some fifteen other clubs and teams from New England and Canada. Coming back early from semester break, the Cards suffered their first dual meet loss in three years, losing to Syracuse. Rebounding in the next two weeks the Cards defeated Union College and UVM the next Saturday. The mile relay team of Tony Haslam, Jamie Love, Ted Heidrich, and Gary Gillis made its annual pilgrimmage to New York, winning their section of the 4x400 meter relay at the Olympic Invitational in Madison Square Garden. Kevin Parker finished 4th in the high jump with a record leap of 6 feet 10 inches. As we went to press, nine Cardinals had qualified for t he IC4A Championships at Princeton University. 217 1976-77 Field Hockey Results McGill Tournament P.S.U.C. vs. McGill 0-0 rati P.S.U.C. vs. Potsdam 1-0 j P.S.U.C. vs. Vanier 3-1 I P.S.U.C. vs. U.V.M. 0-6 1 P.S.U.C. vs. Champlain P.S.U.C. vs. Jr. College 2-0 1 P.S.U.C. vs. NCC 5-0 P.S.U.C. vs. St. Lawrence 1-2 P.S.U.C. vs. Castleton 0-4 P.S.U.C. vs. Delhi 10-2 1 P.S.U.C. vs. NCCC 6-0 P.S.U.C. vs. Middlebury 1-1 1 P.S.U.C. vs. Potsdam 2-1 W , P.S.U.C. vs. Mohawk Valley 4-3 P.S.U.C. vs. Johnson 0-5 1 218 Field Hockey Forwards Nancy Smith Sue Thomas Julie Victor Karen Noar Lenore Hongarder Marilyn Bier Sue Speeches Back Field Shelia Lawton Adele Harriman Allyson Ford Charise Gallup Leslie Douglas Jane Miner Linda Law Audrey Smith Goalies Beth Marshall Pat Smith Debbie Van Home 219 Women ' s Swim Team Dual Meet with Skidmore PSUC 70 Skidmore 51 International Meet PSUC 4th place Dual Meet with St. Lawrence PSUC 30 St. Lawrence 90 Meet with Green Mt. Frigon, who joined the College in August, had directed the team to an 8-14 record, with one game remaining, when we went to press . . . Team scoring leaders were Danny Meade and Matt Wescott, both veterans of the Card ' s earlier competition in Division III. While they had fared poorly against some of the stronger teams in Division II, such as Union, Flmira. Middlebury and Hamilton, the Cardinals were 5-2 against SUNY competition with one game remaining, that against Cortland State. Given a summer to recruit some promising freshmen and transfers, Frigon may return with a stronger team in the ' 77-78 season, and we may see the Phittsburgh State avenge some of this season ' s frustrations. In the NCAA District II competition, the Cards narrowly missed qualifying for the Nationals, losing by a single stroke to Rochester Tech in a sudden-death playoff. However, the team ' s dynamic duo, Rihm and Shpur, qualified for the NCAA Division III championships held in Springfield, Ohio. Shpur scored a fine 308 (72 holes) and narrowly mis- sed making All-American Honors. The Cards won their own 9 team invitational with a sudden death vic- tory over Middlebury. their 5th in the last 6 years. Shpur won the Steve Teta Memorial Trophy firing a 72. Paddleball, Dorm Council 259 A Yearbook is an annual publication that serves as a record of the years activities. This year we ' ve tried to portray this and just a little bit more. Through the pictures in this book, we ' ve tried to present not only a record of activities, but a feeling of what it was like to be at Plattsburgh State this past year. If looking through this book re-created anything of that time for you, then we ' ve accomplished our goal. We apologize to anyone or any activity that has been left out but it is vir- tually impossible to include everything that has occurred in a years time. Special thanks to Henry Posner from Delmar Studios for all of the fine pictures he has taken, to Sandy Montanaro for all her help, to the organizations who waited to have their pictures taken and no one showed up, and to Bill Sloan from Delmar Printing Co. for his patience, understanding and dinner. This year ' s editorial staff worked very hard and here we would like to thank them for doing a great job and worrying at the times when we couldn ' t. Russ in the darkroom until 2:00 A.M., Steve in the rain and not having the pictures printed, no paper in the darkroom, no photographer at the scheduled events, everyone pulling together when the going got tough. Thanks to all the people who smiled when the photographers said say sex and those who didn ' t. Thanks to all of you who bought a book, and good luck to next year ' s staff.
